The Official Vrabel vs Ben Johnson Discussion Thread

AVP is still with the team which tells me Vrabel is probably ok with him.
Maybe as a QB coach and Kraft pays him like a OC.
As much as I will love a Vrabel hire I’m really intrigued by Ben Johnson and Vrabel is still kind of the old guard.

Ron Rivera would be a minority interview.
True I just don't see him as a real possibility, but he would be someone I would want them to interview. I mentioned his name in another post if for no other reason than to pick his brain and get a veteran HC perspective on things. At this point, I think the Patriots as an organization should get all the external feedback, insights etc... they can.

Understood. But we all know those will be ******** interviews. Aaron Glenn maybe the only serious minority candidate this cycle. I couldn't imagine them having interest in him over Vrabel. I don't know about Flores with the law suit and all. Vance Joseph? Maybe?

Edit: They just reported they interviewed Pep Hamilton. So Pep and Byron check the box. They got that out of the way quick.
Those are both intriguing interviews.

Is it really a 2 horse race with Johnson and Vrabel?
No other serious candidates?

Maybe to get to know them? But I don't know. Is there any scuttlebutt about Vrabel having any interest in them being his OC?

He's our Rooney rule guy. Thanks for the interview, Brian.
Slip in a question whether he’d consider a DC position. Would be tampering but I’d love to see him as DC with Vrabes as HC so maybe worth the risk.

I'm much less worried about the offense under BJ than I am defense and overall operations. That's a complete unknown.
All of the above. Plus inexperience with overall program leadership, in an organization with no GM. Too many significant risks.

If Vrabel is hired it'll be for his organization, culture, leadership, and football brain.

If Johnson is hired it'll be for all of those things as well but also for his ability to innovate on offense and be someone that will develop Maye.

For that reason I am leaning towards Johnson. If they get Vrabel I won't be too upset.
As OC how much is Johnson really responsible for the vision in those areas, and how much is he just following the lead of his HC?

There seem to be questions about him in those areas. That’s why the Bears reportedly are scrutinizing him more closely than other candidates on those questions.

The Bears couldn't scrutinize their own ass with a map, a flashlight and a 3-day head start.

Probably. If we are being real those are the two consensus best of the candidates this year.

Big concern I have with BJ is that yes he is an offensive genius BUT can he control and inspire a locker room? It is not easy.
He seems a bit quiet and introspective.
I am confident Vrabel will command respect...he has done it before!!
Also confident he can assemble a great staff as he has connections throughout the league.
BJ is riskier. I would love to see Vrabel take charge.

By the way there are some potential very good OC's out there like Doug Pederson that Vrabel could probably convince to join his staff.
Pederson as OC? Interesting!

Or could he be a dark horse HC candidate?

OC probably better now. He is known as a quarterback whisperer although it did not work out with Trevor Lawrence so well

No, but there is a way to get neither. Wait until after the SB so that Johnson can choose. Vrabel may not wait for us if we are willing to wait for Johnson.
As he should. Or shouldn’t. If we want to wait for Johnson we’re not all in on Vrabel, so he’d be correct to go elsewhere.
