When people say, "the ball wasn't catchable"...I don't understand. Was it likely he would've caught that ball? VERY UNLIKELY. Is it possible he could've at least attempted to make a play on it, given he wasn't MAULED? Yes. Very much so. But throw both of those scenarios out the window and think about this:
On a regular NFL play, let's say Brady throws a screen pass to Vereen that goes for a 35 yard gain. However, on the other side of the field, one of our Patriots held a defender...or maybe he grabbed his facemask...whatever the scenario is...what happens on the play? It is called a penalty. It doesn't matter if it has nothing to do with the play, it is still called. Why wasn't this the case here? Because it "didn't affect the play" it isn't called? Then that should be the case on every single penalty shouldn't it? Unbelievable screw job. That is 2x this year now. I'm not one to complain about the refs, but that's 2 games that were CLEARLY decided by the refs.
