DRAFT DAY DISCUSSION The official: Day 2 Patriots Draft Thread

They've just shown some footage of the war room at the Razor on NFL Network. It was the moment of the Chung pick.

the best thing i like about the pats is that there is no news about pats shopping someone etc and out of the blue you find out hobbs is traded.

One question for tomorrow and throughout camp will be the choice Orhnberger at 123. Obviously almost all of us can make our list of a dozen players we would have preferred, including many that we have discussed. The middle of the fourth is NOT a throwaway pick. The rest are comp 5th and later, throwaway picks if we don't want a QB or a P.

I think the 4th, 5th round is a little early to make these kind of picks. They should try to remember who they picked in the 6th round in 2000. It seems there are still some legit players out there. Overall ,very happy with the first three rounds.

Jeez, I thought that they had talked to that guy already. Damn. Somebody please let me know when he's out of there. I've seen enough of him.

OK, for the upcoming pick:

TE Bear Pascoe
WR Demetrius Byrd
FB Brannan Southerland
OT Lydon Murtha
DT/DE Ricky-Jean Francois
DE/OLB Stryker Sulak
CB/FS Brandon Underwood

Rich Gosselin, for what it's worth, had Ohrnberger rated #80 in his top 100.

Bear Pascoe to the 9ers. Gimps.

............. Looks like Rodney's career with the Pats is essentially over, and I look forward to seeing Chung and Butler develop into stalwarts in the secondary. along with Meriweather and Wheatley. That's a lot of talent in the secondary right now...

That talent you mention is an interesting observation. It is much higher drafted DB talent than what was drafted by BB / SP several years ago. (Merriweather 1st round, Chung, Butler, Wheatley, all 2nd rounders). In years past we had 2nd day draft picks as DB's (Ellis and Guss Scott:3rd, Samuel and Dexter Reid, 4th, Sanders 4th, Richardson, 6th, and Willie Andrews:7th, etc. )

This first day drafting of DB talent - is this a significant paradigm shift in BB drafting philosophy?

It's what you can get away with when you have longterm players with great talent on your roster. Warren, Seymour and Wilfork are all still under 30. Moss should have years of productivity left, along with Brady, Welker and company. When you factor in the team's preference to use mostly lower round picks on interior linemen and linebackers, it gives you a lot of freedom to draft the other positions high.

Sure are alot of people on this board that read a few websites, listen to pundits, and watch a player once or twice and suddenly seem to know an awful lot about talent evaluation. Believe it or not Scounts Inc and the like bust at the same rate as every NFL team lol.

What's up with the small lineman?

The Pats have always utilised smaller linemen because of the schemes.

Why, can they only be HOF'ers if they weigh 320lbs or more?

Agreed. They're not going to be starting this year, giving them plenty of time to carefully bulk up under Mike Woicik and his team. They all seem to have the right fundamentals for the Patriots scheme so I'm happy.

I know look at Denver's line through thier strong running years.

I think these linemen will be given every opportunity with the number of contracts expiring...Fred on PFW said the Pats think Ohrnberger can come in and start right away...Mayock loves him.
