If those players that will be drafted in the top 12-15 spots, with no NFL experience, were put out there as free agents, NONE of them would come close to snagging a contract that takes up the share of cap space that they will get now. And that's by far the best measure of their value to a team.

Some teams are stupid enough to genuinely get caught up in the hype. Most are just trying to please fan bases, as their management understands that they are essentially running a marketing business that just happens to be selling a sports experience. They want us to think they are all about winning, but they only care about winning because it sells tickets, ads, team jerseys, etc.

Do you for a minute really think that Jerry Jones believes Dez Bryant is worth the money and risk, purely in football terms? Of course not. He's selling the image of a hip, tough football team to a Texas culture that loves bad boy images and me-first egos. Bryant will make him money, but not on the football field.

That DL the Pats just signed will play better next year than 90% of the DL drafted. That's value.
