The 2013 Prospect Thread

Thoughts on Sanders Commings CB Georgia. 5'11" 223lbs

Could be nice as a CB/S flex IMO.

He's an asshole that hits women, but he's probably the strongest CB this year and might be helpful shutting down Boldin types. He always plays on the short side of the field.

In other words, someone who has almost zero chance of being drafted by New England.

Two interesting tweets on DJ Fluker that got my attention:

@ECStoner also, u mentioned an NFL OL coach would fal n love w/ Fluker & ur dead on. Saban never makes comparisons but said DJ=Flozel Adams

@ECStoner Saban lights up when talking about DJ. Said his energy level every day is top notch & as physical a player as he's ever coached.

If he comes with the Saban seal of approval, he edges up my "likely to draft" list.

Works for me. I'm definitely warming to the idea of drafting Fluker in the 29-40 range and either playing him at RG or RT.

Fluker at RG with a shift back to center for Connolly would be pretty nice. Hopefully he falls to us after the first round where I hope that the team can get their hands on Matt Elam (my personal binky).

Which of these highly drafted Bama linemen have lived up to expectations? The sum of Alabama is better than their individual parts. Because Saban is such a great college coach. Their skill guys are doing much better. But, a big meh to these linemen.

1. Marcel Dareus - Third overall pick 2 years ago. Kyle Williams looks like a better
player. Practically invisible when they play us.

2. Andre Smith - 6th overall in 2009. Looks like an out of shape turnstile more than
an elite OL. I was very high on him and he's not an all pro player. Which
is what the 6th pick should. I caught a few Bengals games late in the
year because I thought we might draw them. Brandon Graham made him
look stupid in that Philly Thur. Night game.

3. James Carpenter - 25 overall by Seattle in 2011. Not an established player yet.

4. Terrance Cody - 57th overall in 2010. Fat tub of goo who can barely play
more than 2-3 plays in a row.

5. Mike Johnson - 98th overall by Atlanta in 2010. Still a backup.

6. Antoine Caldwell - 77th overall by Houston in 2009. Primarily a backup.
16 starts in 4 years.

It's still too early to give up on a couple of those guys and the others were very late picks where gems are few and far between. That said, given your point, Fluker should be able to produce under similar coaching with the Patriots, no?

Dareus and Smith have to play at pro-bowl level to justify their picks. I seriously doubt either will do. I get tired of the let's draft a Bama guy. He'll be awesome. When you clearly see they aren't awesome. In fact, far from it.

I'm not using a first round pick on an ok RG when I have holes at; SS, CB and WR. And, could probably still use a pass rusher at de. I would argue there's a marginal difference between him and Marcus Cannon if you want to play him at RT. Not using a valuable pick on "maybe" a marginal upgrade.

1. Who advocated using a first round pick on him?

2. RG is a need. It shifts Connolly back to center and the undersized Wendell back to the bench as a back-up.

3. The team has made it abundantly clear that they favor Cannon as a back-up RT (though, I do disagree with them in that regard).

I don't see RG as a need. I see the 3rd highest scoring offense in league history that suffered because of the loss of their 2nd best player. And, can get slowed down by a veteran defense that doesn't get confused. They jam the middle of the field because of a lack of speed at wr. Not because the C is getting over-powered. I don't have a problem taking a mid-round prospect. 3-4TH. Just not a 1st or second on an interior OL

I think the Pats see Cannon as a RT. Not a backup RT. Vollmer is pro bowl talent when healthy. Can't beat him out. Nothing to be ashamed of.

Matt Elam and Fluker would be a really nice draft. Not sure how we could get them both, sort of some serious dreams (along the lines of help from Mike Lombardi). But you never know. Add a couple of receivers later on. With Armond Armstead already signed, that address a lot of needs.

The 2007 offense also had some needs. Just because an offense is great doesn't mean they don't have needs. Connolly is not a starting caliber RG, in spite of the fact that he lined up there. Wendell is best as a back-up and Connolly had his best year at C. You may not see RG as a need, but I (along with many other people) do.

No, it's not going to happen. But the team should still select a RG at some point in the draft.

Another Terron Armstead video against Jackson State:

Terron Armstead vs Jackson State 2012 - YouTube

If you want further evidence of his athleticism, check out the play at 5:16 where he's used as a receiver on a reverse screen.

At the end, in the commentary, they mention that he runs a 4.8 40 and that he might run a 4.7. That's a 300lb lineman. To put that in perspective Donald Stephenson was the most athletic OL in last years combine and he ran a 4.9+.

If Armstead does run under 4.8, that makes him the fastest OL in the last decade. Solder was 4.96, Joe Staley was 4.81, Tyrone Smith 4.88.

Brother Mayo got his Armstead, now I want mine!

I'm having trouble viewing the whole clip because of a slow feed. There's no doubt that Armstead is very athletic and a good looking prospect. There's no doubt that he can dominate inferior competition. My main questions are where you would play him with his 32" arms, and how he handles better competition.

Armstead dominated the Shrine Game. He's held his own at the Senior Bowl, but been much less dominant. If you move him inside to guard you lose some of the benefit of his athleticism, compared to a more powerful kid like Garrett Gilkey. Outside at tackle he's very athletic, I grant you, but his lack of arm length makes me wonder how he'll compare to other guys down the road.

He's certainly a nice prospect, and on my list, but I'm not sure about binky status. But as you say, I got my Armstead.

32" arms is selling him a little short. Think it was 32 7/8 if I remember which is pretty close to Nate Solder (33 1/4). It's his athleticism that will help him compare to other guyw. Pretty confident he'll lead all OL's at the combine in athletic drills.
