I am still fascinated by why so many Jets fans think the Jets' defense is so stacked, possibly one of the best ever for the Jets. Despite being statistically a top defense last year, they were closer to average to above average. I went through their starters and I am missing the playmakers outside of the select few.
Here are what I think are their projected starters (I will use the 3-4 even though they will be using a 4 man front a lot more this year):
DE: Coples - An unproven rookie. So far in camp he has been unremarkable.
NT: Pouha - A good NT, but not a stud
DE: Wilkerson - Had a good rookie year, but Jets fans are already expecting him to be a stud. As we found out last year with McCourty, players can take a big step back in year two of their careers. Even if he doesn't, it doesn't mean he will turn into a stud no matter what Ryan says.
OLB: Pace - Hasn't been anything more than average since he was busted for PEDs
ILB: Scott - Would have been cut if the Jets could have taken the cap hit. Overall, he was an overrated acquisition. Now Jets fans think he will be renewed because he lost weight.
ILB: Harris - A stud when on, but can go long stretches when he isn't on
OLB - Maybin - It will likely be Thomas because Maybin is a pass rush specialist, but Jets fans are salivating over him right now so I will review him. His sack total last year was deceptive because at least half his sacks were coverage sacks where he was taken out of the play initially. His strong camp thus far could be because he is going against Wayne Hunter.
CB: Revis - One of the best players in football. Period.
S: Bell - Looked to hit the age wall last year. Wonder if he has much left.
S: Landry - A stud against the run, but not so good in coverage. Missed about half the season in each of the last two years.
CB: Cromartie - Feast or famine. Can shut down taller straight line runners, but struggles against route runners.
How is this group stacked? Only Revis and maybe Harris would definitely start on most teams in the NFL. They could be stacked if everything goes their way, but they could be just above average if it doesn't.
