This has an opening post with good commentary and information, which we definitely recommend reading.

Re: Jets' Coples Removed From Starting Base Formations

If they wait for 2nd and 3rd and long to put him in against us, he may only play 6-8 snaps a game.

Re: Jets' Coples Removed From Starting Base Formations

This thread doesn't deserve its own heading. If we feel the need to create threads every time something is even remotely negative about the Jets.....we will have become Jet fans. Seriously we will have lowered our own standards. And besides we'd just have too many new thread about ANOTHER team. While it is fun to beat them, their big mouthed players, HC and fans, we have more important fish to fry, and loftier goals. Beating the Pats might mean a successful season to the Jets and their fans, but its just one game for the Pats.

We already have the ubiquitous "Jets sucks" thread, and this topic should be merged into that thread

Re: Jets' Coples Removed From Starting Base Formations

"Jets first-round DE Quinton Coples has been removed from the starting base formations.
For now, the Jets' plan is to use Coples in passing situations and as an end in the 4-3, but leave him as a backup when in the base 3-4. "We'll work it from back to front," DC Mike Pettine said of Coples' role. "He'll be a third-down guy, similar to [Aaron] Maybin." Pettine still eventually expects Coples to play 50 to 80 percent of the defensive plays per game. The Jets are desperate for pass-rushing help after Maybin led the team with a meager six sacks last year."

Let's hope this guy is Gholston 2.0

This is kinda what happens when you draft guys with all of the talent in the world, but who are well-known as being low-drive, noncompetitive players who don't necessarily care a lot about football.

Re: Jets' Coples Removed From Starting Base Formations

Threads like these are what happen when coaches name rookies as starters before they take a snap. Rex really needs to either shut the hell up or go back to being a defensive coordinator instead of a head coach.

I think it's completely legit, given that them picking Coples allowed us a shot at getting Jones, who by all accounts, is off to a pretty decent start. Those 2 will be forever linked given the rivalry between the Jets and Pats.

On top of that, it's TRAINING CAMP, and there's really not much to talk about. aside from fleeting observations at camp.

Re: Jets' Coples Removed From Starting Base Formations

It is way too early to really judge anything. I heard a Jets beat writer on 98.5 yesterday say Coples has been unimpressive thus far, but they haven't even finished a first week of training camp.

I am just happy that Chandler Jones and Donta Hightower are drawing rave reviews and hope that translate into success on the field.

Considering the Jets have been mediocre at best drafters since 2007 and the fact that they didn't have Coples rated as high as where they drafted him (they wanted to trade down about ten spots and draft him in the 20s, but couldn't find a trade partner), Coples' demotion from anointed starter before training camp to situational player is a something to watch. But it is too early to draw any conclusions.

BTW, I love how Rex Ryan anointed his first two picks starters from the second he drafted him while Belichick requires both Jones and Hightower to compete for playing time. I think that is the type of things he does that why even when Belichick lost a bit of control of the team in 2009 with a couple of locker room cancers, it was never the complete meltdown that was the 2011 NY Jets.

C'mon North Carolina quit on Coples. Coples didn't quit on North Carolina.

Agree on the merge, although this deserves highlighting as it represents so much of what's wrong with the Jets and right with the Pats, as the BradyFTW and Deus posts above begin to point out. I remember Rex saying during their rookie camp that they weren't playing him much, giving other guys reps, because "We already know what he (Coples) can do."

Yeah, I agree. These threads should be all in the Jets' suck thread.

This thread is indicative between the two organizations though. Part of the reasons for so many Jets threads is that the Jets can't stop shutting up and the trying to get info on the Pats is like getting blood from a stone.

Don't take it personally, Jack. Its less about you and your thread and more about the perception that we have the Jets "in our heads" and everything about them is important to us. Sort of like the situation at JI, where there are often as many Pats related threads as Jet ones. I'd like to avoid that perception.

That being said, it is comforting to note that the Coples era has started slowly, though its far too early to be making judgments one way or the other. Still its good to see another example of Rex putting his foot in his mouth.

None taken...i just thought it was a fun little nugget of info.

I see what you did there....

Actually, UNC has quit on their football players in many ways, and it is sad. They've taken a high quality educational institution and turned the football program into just another factory where kids don't have to get an education. Players with Coples attitude about life are going to be coming out of there in droves.

I agree that UNC had a lot of problems while he was there, but I don't get the rumors that he announced that he wasn't going to try anymore because of it and all he was going to do is try to stay healthy. If he did, he cost himself millions because if he repeated his 2010 performance he would have been a top 5 pick (possibly #2 right after Luck).

Re: Jets' Coples Removed From Starting Base Formations

Its early in training camp so these types of reports mean pretty much nothing. Still its funny to make fun of the Jets whenever possible but should be merged.

It means something when the Jets head coach states for the record that Coples will start immediately...and then the polka party starts...

Defensive end Quinton Coples, the team's first-round pick, was anointed a starter by Ryan on draft day and now he's working only in pass rushing situations. That's not a problem, it might even be a good thing for the mediocre pass rush, but it again sends the message that there's nothing even close to an organizational philosophy outside of letting Ryan say anything that comes to mind.

Jet Organizational Philosophy..."All players drafted by the Jets are the best ever and are immediately considered starters, per order of Sexy Footman...now let's all go get a Diet Coke!"

Re: Jets' Coples Removed From Starting Base Formations

He must be getting blown completely backward against the run.

By Shonn Green and his backups? Not a good sign.

Coples' crazily candescent coronation by Coach Clown, fresh off the college campus, now canceled in camp: a canard he can't cope with, as he joins the Jersey canaille.

Re: Jets' Coples Removed From Starting Base Formations

Thats a damn high looking ceiling...................

:singing:

Didn't he announce that he had the playbook down on the first day of OTA's?

Rex obviously likes guys with confidence.
