The 2012 season: the Jets [Mod Edit: STILL] suck

Well, it looks as if some Jets fans are pretty excited about their team:

Is anyone else getting excited about this team? - Jets Insider.com Forums

Personally I don't get the excitement. I look at that team as a six or seven win team at most. Looking at a lot of preseason pubs and predictions thus far from the media (USA Today have them coming in fourth in division and ProFootball Weekly has them fourth and Gil Brandt has them 19th in his power ranking on NFL.com), most people around the country agree with me.

The Jets fans see their team greatly improved, but I don't see it. Yes, if LaRon Landry can stay healthy and play at his normal level, he is a big improvement (but that is a big if). I don't see a WR to replace Plaxico's production and Plaxico was useless other than in the red zone. I was never a fan of Hill in the NFL and even if I am wrong it will probably take a year or two for him to prove it. Their LBing corp is out and not very good outside of Harris. Their o-line is still a mess. I don't trust either Shonn Greene or Mark Sanchez to be the focal points of the offense. Revis could hold out. Couples is a boom or bust prospect. Santonio is a two game losing streak from another meltdown (and so is a QB controversy).

Anything can happen in the NFL. Last year at this time if you would say that the 49ers were going to have the second best record in the NFC and go to the NFC Championships, people would laugh at you. So the Jets could surprise. If they live up to expectations though, I think they are in for a losing season and at least one of the three (Sanchez, Ryan, and/or Tannebaum) losing their jobs.

I will never understand the need to telegraph your intentions to your enemies... Ego I assume. And the need to convince yourself that a defense that looked light years ahead of the offense it is currently facing (your own inept one) will look that way when it faces something else...

Jets will rely on the 'foundation' of the defense and play more four-man fronts | New York Daily News

The one thing I don't understand is why they are moving towards a 4-6 defense as a heavier part of their rotation. Spread offenses can shred a 4-6 defense especially against a team like the jets that do not have a pass rusher who can consistently pressure the QB. They have no outside rushers (don't give me Aaron Maybin who got most of his sacks on coverage sacks where he was initially easily taken out of the play and came out of nowhere to get to QBs who held onto the ball too long). You need to generate a pass rush to run the 4-6.

If they decide to commit to the 4-6, they give Revis a lot of leverage to hold out. Without Revis, they are dead in the 4-6.

But moving to more of a four man front isn't really giving away too much. With the league becoming so pass happy, teams are in sub packages more and more. Most sub packages tend to be a four man front.

I do think it is stupid to telegraph that they won't use a 3-4 vs. the Pats or Bills though. Granted he may be just planting the seed as a miscue.

Well the offseason is the best time of year to be excited if you're likely to be .500 club.

If they make .500 this year, they've done a good job. I honestly think they win 5 games max. I'm cautious about this, because it will make me so friggin' happy to watch them twist in their misery that I'm concerned about setting myself up for disappointment. But anytime I try to take a step back and look at them objectively, and look at the schedule, I come up with 4 or 5 wins.

I recall stating last year that I feel almost as bad when the Green Beans win as I do when the Patriots lose. Pulling for and enjoying New Jersey futility with so much passion is almost like having a second team -- only in reverse.

that's 100% correct, Tunes...schadenfreude is not only healthy...it's invigorating...

That line made me PMSL for one reason or another.

We're told it's wrong to "hate," but even my fiancee -- a spiritually grounded woman who takes only a mild interest in football -- acknowledges that genuine loathing of the New Jersey Green Puke is healthy and good. Whenever she sees Wrecks on television she gets repulsed and disgusted for a couple minutes regardless of what he has to say.

I have it on good authority that Gandhi, Mother Theresa and the Dalai Lama all shared your fiancee's view. Hatred of the Jets is not only healthy and good - it's spiritually enlightening.

That actually concerns me; they may be bad enough to get a high enough draft pick to make a difference for them in the future. After they are comfortably out of playoff contention, say, by mid-season, I may find myself in the unusual position of actually rooting for them. Hopefully they can win 7-8 games to remain firmly mired in mediocrity.

But it would be fun to watch them invest more top ten pick money in a QB.

it's ok, the Jets don't know how to develop a young QB, even a top draft pick. I bet even Luck would bust if he went there.

Apparently Sporano's offense is going to be geared to flying by the unstructured seat of your pants. That is kind of what he ran with Romo in Dallas... And what Ben pushed his former OC to allow in Pittsburgh. Players do love it, until it fails because of misreads or misunderstandings or lack of sufficient talent to pull it off. Should lead to some intensified finger pointing since it won't be some poor OC responsible for calling all the wrong plays. The Sanchize and his weapons will have no one to blame but each other, or Tebow...for guessing wrong.

Holmes told Jenny Vrentas of the Star-Ledger that from what he’s seen of Sparano’s offense so far, it will give quarterback Mark Sanchez and the receivers more flexibility to adjust based on the coverage they see, and that players like having that freedom.

“It allows us to have a little bit more fun,” Holmes said. “And to know when you mess up, it’s on us or the quarterback, because of a certain sight or certain be-where-you-are-supposed-to-be-at type deal.”

Problems could arise if Holmes and Sanchez read a defense differently, but Holmes says he thinks Sanchez will thrive in the offense.

“It gives [Sanchez] options now,” Holmes said. “He doesn’t have to stare down one receiver to get him the ball. He can throw the ball wherever he wants to, based on the coverage.”

A great choice for a QB who struggled with reads and progressions. Eliminate the audibles and lets all just do what we do...on three.

Not only does this strategy seem to play into Sanchez's weaknesses, but they plan to start Stephen Hill who never had to read a single defense in college and ran simple routes. I didn't want Hill here for that reason. I figured he would have a better chance with the Jets because they run a simpler offense. Now I got to wonder.

BTW, Sparano didn't call passing plays in Dallas. When he was with the Cowboys, he split play calling duties with Todd Haley. Haley called all the passing plays and Sparano called the running plays. So if it is the same system they ran in Dallas, he was just an observer of it and not an architect or manager of it. That makes it even more dangerous for him to run because at least you know Haley could run it to some success while we have no clue if Sparano has a grasp on the concept.

Of course the Jets and by extension Jets fans are ecstatic with this because they will blame Shotty for the fact that Sanchez stared down receivers and not Sanchez's limitations. Shottenheimer's system might have been less flexible, but I doubt plays called for Sanchez to throw to one and only one receiver. Sanchez still had checkdowns in that offense. He was just slow to use them. I don't know if this system will change that.

It sounds like Favre is the coach.

It is the quintessential Favre-esque offense, but those only win inconsistently even with a Favre at QB...and plenty of athletic and instinctive receiving options.

They are so gonna hafta ground and pound, and they seem unusually ill equipped to. Aside from their weight room behemouth. Who is gonna get the snot beat out of him because he's not really a back, just a quarter back who can't pass efficiently. And the weight training is only going to make that part of his game worse. And his # might as well be replaced with a bullseye.

The 2012 JETS just smack of a team being set up to fail. By a bunch of guys looking to save their jobs by finding any way to play the weak hand they've been dealt in an unstructured format that offers at best a random shot at winning because deep down inside they know that by traditional methods they are screwed. Same deal as the 2008 Doofins, only they weren't facing what this team is and they had the element of surprise early on. Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice, I don't think so...

Nah! Favre would just improvise after the snap. He didn't take his time to read defenses and make presnap adjustments.

They are actually trying to emulate what the Pats are doing with pre-snap reads and adjustments. The problem is, as we have learned with guys like Ochocinco, Galloway, Chad Jackson, etc.) that finding WRs who can read defenses and be on the same page as the QB isn't as easy as you think. Many WRs struggle in systems where they have to make pre-snap adjustments because they don't read defenses well.

In fact, I have seen Sanchez get confused quite a bit by defensive schemes. I wonder if he is capable of reading defenses well enough to run such a system.

I also think it is completely moronic to rely on Stephen Hill as a starter in such a system. He has a huge learning curve just to adapt to the NFL in a simple offense. Now that you add layers of having to read defenses and adjust your routes on the fly and it makes it that much harder for him to learn (assuming he ever will). That is why I was well documented in saying before the draft that I don't want the Pats to touch him although I was nervous they would since Belichick has fallen in love with WRs with incredible phyiscal skills and not much college production (Chad Jackson, Bethel Johnson).

“It allows us to have a little bit more fun,” Holmes said.

Santonio is wrong about that. It will allow PATRIOTS FANS to have A LOT more fun. :rocker::rocker::rocker:

I absolutely love how the Green Beans continue to emphasize "fun" as a priority, as if winning comes in a distant second. "It's ice cream night for coaches and quarterbacks!" ... "Let's get some cheeseburgers to eat on the field before practice!" ... "Hey -- look at the sexy Mexican woman reporter!" ... "Look at coach -- he's wearing a wig in his press conference!" ... "Wasn't coach funny in the Adam Sandler movie?" ... Blah, blah, blah ...

I think it's pretty clear we need a whole JETS FANS SUCK thread, except there are one or two that don't, who mainly post here.*

* see what I did there?

Just because they post here doesn't mean they don't suck. When they commune with their own ilk they're probably as bad or worse. Nothing lacks class like Green Beans mob mentality.
