The other side of the ball was even more different than what we have seen in the past.
I’ve never seen us use the gameplan and personell grouping we used last night. And that’s just watching live without the intricacies.
Snap counts say we used an AVERAGE of almost 6 dbs and 1 DT.

For those who like to double check the stuff, here are some things to look for:

James White (13) and Rex Burkhead (12) both lined up either out wide or in the slot on double-digit snaps last night. Patriots used RBs as wideouts on 20 snaps overall, including penalties.

And the Patriots hardly used a traditional in-line tight end. Ryan Izzo was in a three-point stance on just 11 of his 45 snaps, with six of those coming in garbage time.

The Patriots moved James White and Rex Burkhead around a ton last night. We even saw them aligned on the same side of Brady a few times.

Only one play, and not the A-22 view, but Winovich is picking right up where he left off in college. Clean, quick, decisive win over a solid starting LT.

Just a comment with respect to people saying Michel NEEDs to be more dimensional and how he was very bad yesterday.

Here is a selection of four play-action plays to Edelman:





Michel's presence and him being a tell for run sucks up defenders each time creating more space in the middle for Edelman.

Point is that being balanced and unpredictable has obvious advantages but if you are aware of your tendencies you can use them against the other team as well. And as many other things in the complex game of football those don't really show up on the stats sheet.

With how bad of an L I took last year predicting doom, let me pat myself on the back. Posted Saturday before the game. Their roster, even without Brown, dictates its use. They'll go into high gear using it with Brown.

It’ll definitely take that safety out of the box. Defenses will probably start by subbing out a LB for a DB. Patriots will probably move into some 20 and 21 personnel and just ram the football down their throats.

It's been a while since I've seen a rookie come out with as many tools in his belt as I've seen from Winovich. Villanueva is not an easy guy to get flat-footed and he did it. The swim didn't even need to be clean in order to get the W on that rep.

I saw a lot of Winovich in college and his feel for leverage and short area quickness really stood out. Even with that, I'm still impressed that he's beating guys of Villanueva's caliber one-on-one already. He has a deep, deep repertoire of moves as well.

I have been looking around for some PBP sources that actually have information who is on the field but could not find any. If you stumble over one that has it hit me up I'd love to do some statistical analysis on it.

Not that I’m surprised that they made use of only two down linemen (Bennett and Guy, both playing 3-tech) because, again, their roster dictates it’s use. They’re deep at LB and thin at DT. What surprises me is that they went that route even without KVN. Since Simon played roughly 45% of the snaps, it shows confidence in him.

I wonder how close before kickoff they knew that KVN would be out. Most probably they were already locked into the gameplan they had prepared for some time. Next man up kinda situation.

Either way Simon was more than solid. Another reminder how depth is king.

I’m glad it happened but how in the hell did this guy go after Polite in the draft?

Teams probably fell in love with Polite’s explosive first step off the ball. Polite was very good in college, but he won quite a few reps with sheer athleticism alone. There have been a lot of guys throughout history like him that never properly developed any moves to win at the NFL level and washed out. Many of them came from UF. Not saying that’s Polite, just that he fits that bill. Winovich had to develop those tools in college because he wasn’t winning on his athleticism alone a lot of Saturdays. That made him not only a better fit for this defense, but a more NFL-ready prospect overall than Polite.
