State of the Patriots Q1 - 2025

What we can all attest to is we've seen elite play at the QB position for 19 seasons.

A reign never ever to be replicated by anyone ever again. We went through 5 seasons post Brady into the NFL abyss.

Now we injected the organization with compentecency to develop our young QB.

Drake is just starting to tap into his potential. The plays that Drake makes are off his instincts and natural talents especially when the play breaks down, Drake possesses elite traits that you see in top tier QBs.

I’m open to the idea that after twenty years of Drake Maye (and Josh) this statement is invalidated…

What if McDaniels does so good with him that he gets offered a college HC job somewhere. Or lord knows another NFL HC gig? Then, Maye will be on OC #3 in three years.

Or, maybe McDaniels will stay put and help him grow.

The amount of development Drake Maye has made over the last season and a quarter is remarkable given where he was and where he is now. There was no denying his physical gifts and his attitude. However there also was no denying the flaws in his mechanics and his youth and disruptions during his college years. Think about it. He hasn't had the same offensive system two year in a row since HS. Think about his development AFTER his has some stability.

Collingsworth pointed out well the next major flaw I'd like to see eased out of his game which is "the self-inflicted sack" that we see 2 or 3 times a game. It seems to happen when he feels immediate inside pressure and breaks off his reads looks for a second to escape and then just rushes to the LOS to minimize the loss of yardage.

I don't think it is something that you can just "fix" with a coaching point. It's something he needs to "feel" and process faster the more he sees it, and that just takes times and reps until he starts to "see" the path out of his problem. So hopefully a year or two from now we will see happen less and less, until it is gone.

I already made a post with my Q1 grades but I'll do it again with this week included. Keep in mind these are not graded on a curve for rookies.

A is elite. B is very good/good/pretty good. C is above Ave/Ave/below Ave (all going buy starter level). D is just degrees of bad. F shouldn't even see the field. These grades are typically where I think they rank as starters. Role players typically lose a full grade. So elite role player cap at B+ for instance.

QB - Maye. B+
WR - Diggs. B+ (A little more consistency and production would have put him in A- range), Boutte C+, Hollins D+(has done well in his limited big WR role), Douglas. D-
RB - Henderson C- (not enough production or explosive plays... more of a role player for now... at least no fumbles though). Stevenson F (The few big plays he has had do not make up for his fumbles... less than 100 yards gained per fumble).
TE - Henry B+ (Henry has been one of the best TEs to this point by certain metrics... However something which must be pointed out is the lack of truly elite play at the position right now. And the fact that his YAC is lower than all the other leading TEs by a good amount, indicating it may have a fair amount to do with scheme/situation compared to other Top TEs this year. Hooper C (has been a very good back up).
OL - Campbell B+ (run blocking could be better but right now i think he is playing close to pro bowl level). Wilson C+ (Wilson has been above average for a starter and is well ahead of where you'd think a rookie playing a new main position would be). Bradbury B (Hard to believe a bit, but his play plus lack of penalties has been really good. Onwenu B. Moses C+ (Had a bit of a bad stretch for a while penalties and pressure wise but has turned it around). Brown - N/A but maybe a C?

Edge - Landry B. Chaissen C+ Ponder D+(has recently showed some promising signs so he will rise up I think). White D (he has been okay vs the run... Outside of that has shown little).
DI - Barmore A- (elite but no prime Chris Jones or anything) Williams A- (Ditto). Tonga B+. Farmer C- (some good and bad things, but looks promising) Durden D+ (has not impressed at times but others has looked pretty good.. might be something to build off of here).
Jennings C- (consistently meh)
LB - Spillane B. Elliss F. Gibbons D-.
CB - Gonzo A- , Davis B, Jones B, Austin D.
S - Woodson C- (nice upward trend), Hawkins D- , Dugger D-

Given how the offense is being called.... I think McDaniels is protecting Maye's confidence. Most of his throws are to 'outlets'. TEs and RBs, and quick hitters from the WRs. I don't think it's a reflection on the WRs on the roster. I think it's more a coaching decision to help the young QB develop NFL level awareness and poise.

Good evaluating Bob. Not much to have to add there. I did notice how Dugger and his snaps are decreasing even more. Schooler appeared to be in more than he was against Bills.

I'd give Woodson a C+.. the rookies getting better and is likely our best safety.
