So, @RapSheet tells us Julian Edelman could be worth $7M/year on the open market

Just a quick question for you. In which round was Benjamin Watson drafted?

Last pick of the first round. What point are you trying to make? We just came off a Super Bowl win in 2003, we had the luxury of spending a pick on a guy who was high on our board. The 2014 draft is a different story, this roster is littered with holes. We already have Gronkowski, it would be idiotic to blow a first rounder on a tight end, it makes no sense.

SO WHAT HE DRINKS! And YES IF CONNECTED WITH TOM BRADY,MANY WRs COULD CATCH 100 bones at 10 YPC. THEY ARE CHECKDOWN GLORIFIED HANDOFFS. BUT PROB IS THAT'S EDELMANS CEILING!! Its NOWHERE NEAR GOOD ENOUGH TO GET OUR TEAM A FOURTH TROPHY. I ADMIT JUSTIN IS A GAMBLE BUT THE REWARD IS OUTRIGHT TREASURE ISLAND! HE CAN CLEAN UP HIS DRINKING REALISTICALLY AND PAYCHECKS ARE A BIG MOTIVATION WHEN THEY ARE THAT BIG. CAN YOU SERIOUSLY SAY 40 times are an exact measurement of gamespeed. I like Dobson, but noway can you say his playspeed is on BLACKMONS LEVEL. DONT TAKE MY WORD. LOOK UP ALL THE TAPE YOU CAN. YOU KIND REASSURED WHAT I SAID. IF HE IS A DRUNK,IMAGINE HOW FAST HE WILL PLAY WHEN CLEANED UP AND FOCUSED ON OUR TEAM. AS FAR AS PRODUCTION GOES,LETS BE REALISTIC!! Look at jags qb play and he still has LIKE 250yrd game while hung over. Thats kind OF MY WHOLE POINT. NO DOUBT CLEAN,FOCUSED, CATCHING PASSES FROM THE ONE AND ONLY TOM BRADY THIS GUY CAN AND WOULD DROP 200YARDS ON A REGULAR BASIS. EDELMAN IS NOT CAPABLE OF SUCH GAMES. EDELMAN AS #2 OPTION BEHIND GRONKOWSKI, OUR OFFENSE ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH TO GET TO THE SUPERBOWL MUCH LESS BEAT SF OR SEATTLE!! BUT BLACKMON IF CLEAN DOES GIVE US THE AMMO,TALENT TO BRING HOME THE SUPERBOWL TROPHY AND HELP TOM BRADY GET 4 #5 RINGS OVER NEXT 2 SEASONS.

EDELMAN IS NOT COMPARABLE TO JUSTIN BLACKMON AND YOU KNOW IT!!!!!!! HE IS ONLY PHENOM WR WE CAN HAVE. HE IS MAKING ROOKIE CONTRACT $$ AND INCIDENTS HAS BROUGHT DOWN HIS VALUE TO OUR RANGE OF POSSIBILITY. THATS THE IDEA, ONCE HE PLAYS ENTIRE SEASON,NOWAY WE COULD HAVE JUSTIN. BELICHICK WOULDNT GIVE UP THAT MANY PICKS. HE FEELS OUR HIGHTOWER"s and Tavon WILSONS ARE MORE IMPORTANT TO HIM!

I DON'T GET IT,HE TRADES XTRA #3 TO TRADE UP FOR A SLOW LB.THERE ARE 5LBS IN THAT DRAFT OUTPERFORMING HIGHTOWER THE SLOW. BUT A FIRST AND EVEN SECOND ROUND WAS TO MUCH TO GIVE UP FOR JOSH GORDON!! WHEN I SAID I WOULD TRADE WHATEVER IT TOOK TO GET GORDON, SUGGESTED A SECONDROUND PICK OR MALLET PLUS A SECOND OR THIRD OR A #1 EVERYBODY SAID I WAS STUPID, NUTS AND RIDICULED AND INSULTED. NOW I DONT WANT TO PASS UP ON YET ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY TO GET BRADY IMPACT PLAYERS FOR HIS LAST COUPLE YEARS OFAS ELITE QB. AND SURROUND HIM WITH TALENT TO WIN A SUPERBOWL WHILE WE HAVE THE LUXURY OF A GREAT QB. ANYTHING SHORT OF A SUPERBOWL I CONSIDER DISAPPOINTMENT!! Edelman wont make a difference. PAYING HIM GETS IN THE WAY OF SIGNING A DOMINANT RG,CENTER, OR IMPACT DEFENDER THAT IS PART OF TALENT MAKEOVER,ALLOWING US TO COMPETE WITH SF SEATTLE,AND EVEN DENVER! EDELMAN AND OFFENSE FRONTING EDELMAN AS OUR #1 WR WASN'T NEARLY GOOD ENOUGH. NO IMPACT AT WR AND NON EXISTING PASSRUSH.

op2:

I do not think that we should cut Amendola. I think that he will be here for several years. I think that he is worth $3M+ this year and will likely to be worth a million more next year.

However, we shouldn't keep him because we will have to pay out the rest of his bonus next year. The reality is that he was given a $6M bonus. It is already "dead" and gone. We will accounted for part this year. We can decide when to pay the rest.

It is NOT stupid to cut a player who is costing you more than $3.5M a year, $2M guaranteed after March 11. It is stupid to cut a player valuable to the team who is worth the money, especially given who we have for the rest of our receiver corps.

Cutting Amendola would be stupid, plain and simple.

$3.8m dead money next year.

There is no doubt that he can play, that he's willing to play through pain (Reiss has been all over this) and that when healthy, he's got a ton of talent. Yeah, I know, the "when healthy" is the kicker - but could anyone say anything different of JE until last year?

This is crazy talk. You guys act as if he's a complete bust - even injured, he was targeted at almost exactly the same rate/snap count as JE and had about the same reception rate and yards/target as JE.

A quarter of the passes Brady threw this year went at Edelman. There's your 100/1000. Project Amendola out to Edelman's snap count and he's right there, too.

Seems like this time of the year, people get too crazy over $$$$ in this competition to free up space, blissfully ignoring that sometimes you're losing a lot of talent when you do that. Cutting Amendola costs almost as much in dead money as the money saved, so, in essence, you'd have to get someone for HALF his price who would do as well.

And no, you can't.

If Edelman leaves and is not replaced by a top WR, Amendola will be the top receiver in catches on this team next year, barring injury. Define valuable.

EDELMAN HAS BEEN INJURED EVERY YEAR BUT THIS YEAR

Pats fans have very short memories it seems. Amendola is injury prone, yes. but lets not act like Edelman is some picture of perfect durability.

Edelman has been on injured reserve one time in his career.

Yes, but at contract signing time (now for Edelman and last year for injured-ola) who had better numbers? Or was it about the same? Who had a more consistent playing history? About the same? Then Edelman will want at least Amendola money. Which is a lot.

Signing Edelman long term = buying high
Cutting Amendola = selling low

Basically, we already have a WR under contract who is very, very similar to Amendola. Primarily a slot guy with enough size and straight-line speed to have notably more versatility than a Welker type. Unfortunately, he's injured as often as he's healthy.

That describes both Amendola and Edelman. If Edelman gets signed to a long-term contract this offseason, then suffers his third major foot injury at some point next season, everyone will be saying the same thing about him that they're saying about Amendola right now.

Patience is a virtue, and it's one that we really have to exercise with both Amendola and Edelman.

Are you, by any chance, Hanzi from the Howard Stern Show?

Posters talk so much about Edelman benefiting from being the only weapon this season but that is such a misconception. In games 1-8 of the season Gronkowski missed 6, Amendola missed 4, and Vereen missed 7. If he were taking advantage of being the only weapon, he would have done so in games in the first 8 weeks.

Games 1-8
• Catches - 48
• Yards - 462
• Average - 9.6
• Touchdowns - 2
Games 9-16
• Catches - 57
• Yards - 594
• Average - 10.4
• Touchdowns - 4

Let us also talk about how clutch Edelman was:

• First half - 43 catches, 345 yards, 8.0 average, 2 touchdowns
• Second half - 61 catches, 694 yards, 11.4 average, 4 touchdowns
• Quarter = 1 - 22 catches, 191 yards, 8.7 average, 1 touchdowns
• Quarter = 2 - 21 catches, 154 yards, 7.3 average, 1 touchdowns
• Quarter = 3 - 28 catches, 284 yards, 10.1 average, 1 touchdowns
• Quarter = 4 - 33 catches, 410 yards, 12.4 average, 3 touchdowns
• Home - 52 catches, 436 yards, 8.4 average, 3 touchdowns
• Away - 53 catches, 620 yards, 11.7 average, 3 touchdowns

He improved as the season went and as the game progressed. I understand if people don’t want to pay him $7 million per season but don’t short change the guy on his performance and make it seem like he benefited from a system or being the only weapon.

Despite not being a huge Amendola fan I do agree, there is really no point in cutting Amendola. Edelman can be resigned and they can structure his deal so that his cap # is lower this season to account for Amendola, then they can move on from Amendola after 2014 if he is still underperforming.

...of course he benefited from the bolded. I'm not sure how you can argue otherwise.

Weeks 12 and 13 playing with Gronkowski, Amendola, and Vereen all on the field and “healthy” Edelman was targeted 23 times resulting in 18-catches, 78%-catch ratio, 221-yards, 12.27-yard average, and 2 touchdowns.

As far as the system benefiting him, let me as you this - what exactly is the system and what aspects of it benefited him?

In addition, if the system is so easy to succeed in why didn’t our biggest UFA signing since Thomas succeed in it?

1.) Why are you cherry picking two games, instead of looking at the entire season?

2.) Amendola was never healthy

3.) It's not an indictment of Edelman; it's common sense and should apply to any team/players in a similar situation.

Because he was injured and playing at well less than 100% all season long. How can you continue to pretend this didn't happen?

Because it undermines his Amendola jihad, and he can't have that.

Let’s see Jack because Vereen, Amendola, and Gronkowski were not on the field for the entire season together so the entire season would not make a lot of sense to look at.

I know Amendola was really hurting luckily they were able to get him into surgery the day after the season ended, oh wait he doesn’t even need surgery…

Anyway, on a side note I noticed that you did not answer my questions. Interesting that you can make the assertion that a player benefits from a system but you cannot even explain what that system is. Actually I lied it is not interesting it is foolish.

Because he was injured and playing at well less than 100% all season long. How can you continue to pretend this didn't happen?

I do not know the lack of offseason surgery, the fact that his numbers align with every other season of his career, and the fact that on 9/24/2013 Amendola said he was close to 100%. Oh, I should disregard all of that and just say well that Andy dude in the forum said he was injured and that is why he did poorly.

If Amendola needed rest and time to heal in theory, he would have been his healthiest in the game against the Broncos, correct.

I do not really feel like debating Amendola. However, since you seem to feel the system is what benefited Edelman as well maybe you can answer the question I asked Jacky Boy - what is the system exactly, how does it work and how does it benefit Edelman?

Not really, I posted 1 page back that I didn’t think we should cut Amendola. Jacky Boy could you stop trolling me it is really annoying, if you want to have a conversations I am down to do so but this crap is childish and I am not into it.

Please carry on with being a d-bag, I'll put you back on ignore.
