Re: Shula: Pats like Bonds might deserve asterisk --NY Daily News
Boy, those '72 Dolphins are so arrogant.
Do they acknowledge that they never faced a team with a winning record in the '72 regular season?
It's sad to watch everyone line up their excuses week after week. The Patriots are called 'classless', yet all they do is go out and play, tune out the naysayers, and play for each other.
No whining, no finger pointing, no throwing teammates under the bus. They are the complete opposite.
But because BB doesn't hug & kiss after games, or ask his team to stop playing so hard in the 4th quarter, they are vilified.
I truly hope BB writes a tell all book when he retires, and names names.
That's not entirely true.
In the first game of that season, the beat KC, 20-10, who finished out the season at 8-6, so since it was the first game of the season, you might be able to argue the point, since they started the game at 0-0, and finished it at 0-1.
However, in the 13th week, they defeated the New York Giants, 23-13, and that Giants team finished 8-6.
However, the rest of the schedule was classic cupcake, featuring 2 teams that finished 7-7 (Jets and Minnesota), and everyone else was well below .500, including the 3-11 Patriots (recipients of a 52-0 pasting that prompted their coach at the time, John Mazur, to quit).
You cannot take away or denigrate that '72 team's effort or record, it is true, but putting that team in their time, and comparing it to this Patriots team in it's time, the matchup is more than equitable.
The comment by Shula is uncalled for, and lacks class and tact.
