Serious question: does BB really have a "type" at QB?

You should also keep in mind that none of those guys before JG were drafted with an eye toward becoming THE successor.

You don't know that what if Brady was injury prone?? We have been very fortunate a QB like Brady is the exception and not the rule.

What if he was? Pretty sure they decided he wasn't after a couple of years, and even if he was, these guys were all drafted to be backups. JG was drafted to be the successor.

Based on timing they lucked out but it didn't really work to the Patriots advantage. Brady won't be playing four years from now... Jimmy probably will.

You can only do so much with film, interviews and short workouts. The ability to learn, get better, adapt and keep in shape are all on the individual.

I do know this, whoever it will be, will most likely never measure up to Brady and the comparisons will never go in their favor.

He's a once in a lifetime player. The greatest of all time. Almost unfair to the QB's who will follow.

I'd like to think it would be the Tom Brady model (duh), but no one could tell Tom Brady was Tom Brady during the draft and probably couldn't now with a current draft prospect.

The lad had two super bowl rings before anyone really knew the caliber of player he would turn into.

And then we'll all experience a brief moment of joy followed by some terrible sense of mortality and the fleetness of time... and then infinite sadness.

I don't think type matters as long as there's no glaring physical weakness........it comes down to preparation/desire/will

hell, brady's type was different in the 1st 3 SB wins than in the next 5 appearances

there is nothing physically outstanding about brady .... but his recognition of his own biggest weaknesses (mobility being the one I am thinking of) and the focus and preparation to develop around that (pocket awareness, pocket movment) and turn it into a 'strength' (quick delivery) is where the next level came from

Other than being physically able to throw a football, is there really any common thread about the QBs the Pats have picked since Brady?

• Davey: big arm, terrible fit
• Cassel: no game tape
• O'Connell: strong arm, panicked under pressure
• Hoyer: poised, smallish
• Robinson: smallish, good stats (in Big XII)
• Mallett: cannon arm, little touch
• Garoppolo: smallish, no playbook offense
• Brissett: strong, struggled with deep throws

I guess my point is simply this—I have no idea who BB thinks should be the next attempt at a QB of the future. Honestly, I think it could be anyone from Lamar Jackson to Kyle Lauletta to Chad Kanoff.

Detractors can think what they want when it comes to Brady being the greatest or not. For me he is the greatest as a whole. But to deny his pocket awareness and movement is downright myopic. Like a 6th sense which can't be taught to that level.

I think they won't draft a QB this year. I think they use their picks this year to move up in next year's draft and grab someone there.

What is he looking for? I believe it has to be someone who can stand in the pocket and handle the pressure as well as deciphering the opposing defense. Sounds like a tough find.

Would he draft Lamar Jackson? Originally I thought no but then wondered what would have an RGIII, Randall Cunningham or Mike Vick been like under BB and JM? Could be interesting and definitely some edge of your seat type football.

A question I've been pondering lately is what would the best type of QB be for a post Brady Pats? A pocket passer would possibly have to live under Brady's shadow while a highlight reel making scrambler may not or at least not as much. So to me Lamar Jackson would be an interesting pick from that aspect as well.

Anyway I'll root for whomever they pick and I'll give him time to grow.

• 3. O'Connell: slow in the pocket, average arm
• 4. Hoyer: chokes in the big games
• 5. Robinson: not sure he even played a down in a real game

• 7. Garoppolo: good pocket presence, quick release, good short/mid range accuracy
• 8. Brissett: great arm, slow reads, slow release

See number 7. Brissett was good, but he never developed his reads. Garoppolo reads and release improved each year. A quick release in college doesn't always translate in the NFL with the defensive schemes and superior players.

I agree. In another thread I expanded on that a bit more. Basically I don't see BB using major assets or picks to move up in this year's draft to grab a top ranked QB. I do see him trading one of his first round picks into next season hoping to move up in next year's draft and adding additional picks with the trade. But he could definitely draft a QB in the late second or third round as a developmental project and if that guy turns out to be thee guy then BB still would have a high first round pick to play around with. Imo, it's better to build up the defense with high ranked prospects because it would help both Brady now and a rookie QB later.
