Ryan Wendell To IR to Make Room For Stork

Sup, what stats are they relying on to come to that number? Obviously my own observations are biased but I would not rate the Patriots a top 5 run blocking team but I would rate them top 5 pass blocking team (minus the first half of the Dallas game they have been VERY good by my biased observation).

It appears as though they are using their own analytic formulas to determine certain values for runs of certain distances, negative rushes, percentage of dropbacks, sacks allowed, etc. If you click on the link they'll explain their thinking much better than I ever could

Basically, similar to PFF (or ESPN), but they don't claim that James White has been the most effective RB in the entire NFL, or that Johnny Manziel is a more effective QB than Tom Brady. In other words, most here feel as though Football Outsiders is a very reputable source, and while they may have their own formulas like the other sites, they seem to be more in line with reality. Who knows, though? Statistics can lie just like anything else.

Again I ask, how did Wendell get hurt?

Assuming that it happened in practice due to his low number of live game reps, but I haven't seen anything that definitively proves that. It was a knee injury.

Yeah pretty much how I'd put it. Their methods are no less questionable than other sites, but their results certainly are less questionable. After a while, it stops being "cherrypicking sources to fit your agenda" and starts being "one site is clearly more predictive than the other". That line was crossed centuries ago.

I personally like Bruschi's Indexing approach. You have to break down the various aspects of the game and rank them individually and put them back into an index to really get an idea.

Not surprised.. think Andrews goes to G and Stork to C. Andrews will cover for Jackson. Think we are good for now, as Williams is the emergency tackle backup.

But if Vollmer goes down, we are really screwed.

I read that Stork was practicing at C & G; played some G in college. No mention of Andrews- who has always played C -doing the same.

My gut says Bill thinks this will be a temporary problem. Washington aren't very good and NYG have zero pass rush. Therefore you can get away with a shaky OL. By the time that stretch is over we will in all likelihood have Cannon, Jackson and Mason back, just in time for when we will need them against Denver.

I wouldn't go into panic mode yet.

Wendell was elected Captain this summer by his teammates, and now he's headed to the street and his career is probably done. How quickly things change... These NFL players don't get paid enough money in my opinion.

Wendell was a placeholder for Stork

Meanwhile at the "Scarnecchia Finishing School For Offensive Lineman", Dean of Studies Dave DeGugliemo is preparing his next class..

One of the questions facing the Patriots is what to do at center with impressive undrafted rookie David Andrews having played every snap this season, but with 2014 starter Bryan Stork (concussion) ready to return to action after opening the season on the injured reserve/designation to return list. I was told Stork worked at guard this week in practice, and his teammates view him as a player who shouldn’t have much of an issue making that transition from center. Stork played both guard spots at Florida State as a freshman, but has exclusively been at center since. The Patriots have had a run of injuries at guard, so it makes sense that the 6-foot-4, 310-pound Stork would initially figure into that guard mix in 2015 while Andrews stays at center. As one player explained to me, "He filled a role last year, and now he’s stepping into a new role."

If this were training camp it would be depth, but now with all the injuries and Andrews success, it looks like more.
There is body depth and layered depth. The team doesn't have the body depth but are ok layered wise.

As long as nobody else gets hurt

OLs are often ranked in the running game by yards before contact. In this case, I wonder if the Pats' top ranking isn't the result of Dion's ability to make tacklers whiff.

I understand the value of the approach, but I always get the sense that Bru is throwing **** against the wall to see what sticks. Take his toughness index, for example. If he had broken down the stats and analyzed each independently it would tell us orders of magnitude more than his unqualified average of simple rankings.

ESPN hired Brian Burke to power their stats department, but they sure aren't putting him to proper use yet. His analyses are generally far superior to anything ESPN has ever done, but they were also more restrained by the scientific method and integrity, so they may be if limited use to a headline machine.

Stork at Guard... watch out for some Trickery..uhhh.... unbalanced line action.

I find that theory hard to believe, given the other injuries. They'll dress 6 OL today, it seems (6.5, if you count Williams), and that includes a guy who hasn't played since preseason and another guy limping around on a taped knee.

If Wendell wasn't truly injured to the point where he simply couldn't do it, then cutting him seems really nuts.

It'd be pretty amazing if DD and BB are grooming Silinga to play OL in a crunch - I say Silinga because he's got the size and the immovability, and he won't be getting many snaps on the DL.

Surprised they didn't activate Barker. They seem way too thin right now, and even when they get Jackson and Cannon back, they're at 8 OL, which scares me with 12 games to go...

Rather see Siliga play G than Barker...
