Filed to ESPN: When the Randy Moss-to-Minnesota trade is completed later, Patriots will receive a third-round pick in return from Vikings.

So the 120th (or so) overall pick for one of the greatest receivers in the history of the game. Can we trade down!

the are 30 other teams that could have given us a 2nd rounder.... a 3rd is cheap. 2 x 3rds would be a pass, but only just.

I'd prefer picks, but a starting CB for a year wouldn't be bad compensation either. The Bodden injury really hurt our depth and a year of Winfield starting would push Butler or Arrington into a potential nickel role, where they could develop and mature without a trial by fire.

The report of just a 3rd makes me sad since we'd basically get that if he left as a FA. To me, the Vikings are more desperate to make this deal than we are. They need a deep threat, and with Brett, they're absolutely playing for today. Only acquiring a 3rd would mean we were desperate to get rid of Moss as a potential locker room distraction.

And when you say locker room distraction we must talking at the oakland end of the scale surely for us to accept a third. I never understand comp picks but i'd agree that we'd prob at least be looking at that. Are we that desperate for a third rounder we can trade rather than have to use?

Are you sure that is the case? i have heard different. What nfl network is saying is the vikings initiated this and have wanted him for weeks

1) Childress has a lot less job security than BB and this may be his "win or else" year. The Vikings need him badly, hence the price may go up. If it is a third, please let there be conditions to move it up to a 2nd or 1st based on catches and yards......
2) This is a young Pats team and Belichick may have been thinking about team chemistry and showing who is in charge. In addition with the history of Branch, and AD, he may have just decided to nip it in the bud and not deal with it. Moss does have a history of metastasizing when he isn't happy. Do you want it to affect all those rookies and other youngsters?
3) Don't underestimate Brady and his ability to adapt. It would be no different than if Moss got injured and was out for the year ala Faulk. You plug somebody else in there and adapt to the changed circumstances. If it forces him to throw to everybody else, so be it. The only unhappy people will be the fantasy football players who don't know which Sunday their guy will be the one to get 8 catches for 120 yards.
4) Yes, it will hurt when the double teams that went to Randy suddenly go elsewhere. Look at Woodhead's TD grab the other night. The reason he was so open and single covered was that Moss was doubled on one side and Welker doubled on the other. Welker's catches will go down but if just redistributes them to TE's who suddenly are pass catching weapons (unlike in year's past), the Pats will survive.
Mankins holds out and Kazcur hurts his back, the Pats adapt. Faulk blows out an ACL, the Pats adapt ( so far). Ty Warren hurts his hip, the Pats adapt ( or try to). Maroney gets traded, the Pats adapt. There is a starting QB in Kansas City who stepped in two years ago when Brady got hurt. This situation while different from an injury is similar in that it will ( if it comes to fruition) force them to adapt.
We all appreciate what Moss has done for the team over the last three plus years but like in other relationships, sometimes you have to sever the ties BEFORE it goes nuclear. At least we'd be getting him out of the conference to minimize the potential for him o hurt the team as a member of the Vikings, other than Halloween or the Super Bowl....

Totally agree, i wanted a 2nd. If moss left we would apparently only get a 5th. Even so a third still seems like bad value to me

Halloween is going to be an appropriate day to play the Vikings because this trade is surely going to come back to haunt us.

3rd round pick is just nothing..

The next Taylor Price, Kevin O'Donnell or Bethel Johnson. With luck Chad Jackson, but that's a 2nd as well as Bethel .

And Mankins is not going back, Kraft just paid the big deal to Brady to retain him and now all the others big players are gone . We are like in the 2005. But with worst defence

For just a 3rd there has to be some behind the scenes stuff we're not aware of. Really doesn't make sense otherwise.

Any suggestion that the offense will be the same without Moss are insane, as are any suggestions that this ends the season. Yoof movement in full swing.

For whatever reason, reading this post just calmed me down a lot.

I hear you but I'm not so sure. That team had some great balance on offense between the RBs, WRs, and TEs. I don't think we could match that with this team minus Moss. Anyway, I would take 2004 Branch, Givens, and Brown over 2010 Welker, Tate, Edelman, Hernandez.

Anyway, more importantly is that the 2004 team had an awesomely outrageous defense.

Agree with everything here.

Of course we take Branch, Brown and Givens over Tate, Welker (this year's version) and Hernandez.

You may be forgetting that the 2004 team had the best RB in the league that year. So, yeah, it's not the same.

Larry Moroney?

Whoops, that was 07.

I agree with what your saying especially point 4. My personal opinion is i love moss especially with the young team, it takes pressure off them to perform as they have a hall of fame bound wr on the other side drawing doubles. I still think we will adapt i am just sad to see him go... especially for what at the moment seems like a pretty cheap price i it is only one 3rd

U already throw taylor price in the bust collumn? what a stupid thing to say

well....there's definitely plenty of tamponering

I don't agree with the trade, but even I have to admit that this was nicely done.

Trade will happen with no new contract apart of the deal for Moss.
so not only he doesnt play here this yr, he could very will sign with another team next yr in the AFC and come back and burn us

The reported 3rd round compensation for Moss makes me wonder if deal is more about off-field/chemistry issue than pure Xs and Os.

MikeReiss Mike Reiss
Don't see many teams trade their top playtime WR in fifth week of season for a draft pick unless there is more to the story.
