I see where you're coming from, but I just don't get how 39 is any less "tight" (as THEARCHIVES put it) than any other number. It really doesn't matter. They don't make any players look better or whatever. All that matters is the player wearing the number. This whole "tight" number thing stikes me as if it was coming from casual, younger football fan, turned on by the flashiness of T.O. or Chad Johnson and his celebrations. They probably pick up a ball and try to figure out their best celebration and pick their "tightest" number instead of actually focusing on the aspects of the game that will make them better.

There just seems to be in an influx with young WR's taking numbers in the teens lately.

Mark Bradley on the Bears - 16
Matt Jones on the Jaguars - 18
Ernest Wilford on the Jaguars - 19
Reggie Williams on the Jaguars - 11

Even some vets take these teen numbers when they switch teams:

Plaxico Burress on the Giants - 17
Jerry Rice on the Broncos before his retirement - 19
Tim Dwight on the Jets - 17
Andre' Davis on the Bills - 18
Corey Bradford on the Lions - 17

So they use the other teen numbers, too.
17 just more frequent.

Anyway, Jackson's seem to be his choice (1+7=8), and although #39 may not be all that "tight," I think Maroney can make it work.

What? He only had one season where he went over 1000 yards, and during that one year he only averaged 3.8 yards per carry.

Says someone who obviously wasn't around to watch the '70's Pats. His backup, Don Calhoun, ran for over 700 yds in '76, '77, &'79. They used two backs in those days as well, so Andy Johnson ran for 5-700 yds. those years as well. I think we still hold the record for team rushing yds in Sams only 1000 yd season( and these were 14 game seasons). This guy probably thinks B Bonds HR record is for real!

Numbers in sports have always been important and will always be important. Maroney talks about making his own legacy. I am happy to see him take #39. Maybe he can make that number as "cool" as Earl Campbell and other great backs made their numbers. Then in the end, if it gets retired, #39 would honor him and Sam Bam, who was a great Patriot in his own right and one of the greatest and most important college players in history. It was Sam's monster game for USC against Alabama that desegregated football in the South. After the game Bear Bryant brought Sam into the all-white Alabama locker room stood him in front of the team and said, "That, boys, is a football player", and from that point on colleges in the South followed Bryant's lead and began recruiting black athletes.

So Garrett Mills gets a fullbacks number and Jeremy Mincy gets a linebackers number.
Can we conclude that these players WILL be used as the numbers indicate?

Mills was presumed to be our Cooley, and Cooley wears 43. That fits.

I figured Mincey would get a 90 but I'm not sure there are any left. Obviously he's a LB, he's too small for a DE in the 3-4. At least he won't be wearing a 40 like TBC for his first few years.

I'm disappointed they gave away #45 though. That was my man's number.

So, these numbers are LOOSE numbers? Will Maroney be worth 1st round money if he wears a loose number. Jackson, pay him lower for a loose number.

Hey, I'm all for cap savings if they are given loose numbers. Let no player ever be tight again...it's got to be worth at least a 5% cap savings.

39 I like for Mahoney. It is not like all the other RB numbers in the 20s that u see on every single team. It's different and that should be looked at as a good thing. Mahoney will hopefully stay at 39 and not switch numbers like some are speculating.

FWIW, that's the leading rusher in the history of the Patriots. I think enough time has passed that people are beginning to forget guys like Sam and how great they were. Things were much different then; Cunningham was really a fullback and was equally known as a lead blocker. But he could also turn the corner and take off. He had injury problems through his career, and was out of football entirely in 1980, before returning to play 2 more years. Like a lot of guys, he pretty much was done by the time he reached 30.

It's funny, look how many times Curtis touched the ball in his time with the Pats, in comparison to how few times 'Sam the Bam' did.
