Roethlisberger looks normal, talking normal at ESPYs (merged: helmet ads)

Re: Roethlisberger looks normal, talking normal at ESPYs

If we can for a moment put aside the troll-baiting and Marky Mark disgressions to return to a discussion about Ben R., here are my observations:

1. Physically, he looked remarkably good for a man whose face had impacted a windshield at 35 MPH.

2. However, was it just me or did his nose look a little misshapen? It didn't look that way before, at least to me. Also, as others have mentioned his face appeared a bit puffy.

3. Still, I expected to see contusions and bruises, scars and scabs and I saw none of that. He is one lucky, lucky fellow.

4. I will not be drawn into a debate about his quarterbacking skills, nor a comparision between him and Brady. But here is what I observe: he is still one foolish young guy. To wit:

a. It is obvious from his remarks to Jim Rome that even in the immediate aftermath of his nearly miraculous escape from death, (in his own words he was within minutes of death when the medics got to him), he will continue to ride a motorcycle. His one concession is that he will (he says) wear a helmet. This shows me a lack of judgement. Don't push your luck, Ben.

b. What says even more about his maturity (or character) is this: despite the police reports that he was operating the motorcycle without a valid license (he had only a learner's permit, which had expired), and the fact that a helmet IS required under PA law when operating a motorcycle with a learner's permit, he still said to Rome that he wasn't legally required to wear a helmet. (I really wish Rome had asked him a followup about the facts I just cited.) This shows a continued lack of acceptance of responsibility for his lack of judgement.

Yeah, it looks a bit askew.

his face appeared a bit puffy

The skin on his face is pulled back, more taut, from the plastic surgery. As a result, his cheek bones appear more prominent - just like when an old lady receives a facelift.

For the injuries he suffered though, he looks pretty damn good.

Clayton said this was the turning point in Ben's career - when the stubborn to a fault young QB would be freed of his own limitations because an accident that could have been life as well as career threatening (though in hindsight Ben, it wasn't exactly either) had occurred almost as predicted and had opened his eyes to the folly of his own stubborness and a denial born of a quiet arrogance.

First off you're quoting a theory by Clayton that was just pulled out of thin air. He had no basis for supposing this. He was just using rudimentary psychological connections that have no general validity in human nature and certainly none particular to Rothlisberger.

Is Ben stubborn? yes. But is that a bad quality for an athlete to have? I'm not so sure. Would I like him to never ride a bike again? Absolutely. Should he let others dictate how he chooses to live his life? Absolutely not.

And CT, your Brady vs. Ben comments don't really warrant a detailed retort. Suffice it to say Brady never had a QB rating in his post season career close to Ben's in XL. And that was after being credited with a rushing TD that even he knows never happened.
Rushing attempts do not factor into a QB 'passer' rating.
Even with a horrendous SB his playoff passer rating was over 100. And as much as you would all like to re-write it in some way, Brady was not impressive in his first playoff run.
You want to say BEn is a no-good and his 27-4 record and SB is a fluke, hey, that's your opinion, however misguided.

I believe that what I said was that Ben is overrated (because he has the best defense and a top running game). His success is no fluke, and the Steelers could just about achieve the same thing with Kordell Stewart, but certainly with other QBs.

Since this thread is about Ben, dragging Brady into it is off-topic and irrelevant.

Thanks for responding, but I was actually hoping my point #4 would elicit some kind of discussion from someone:

Marky Mark apparently took a shot at him for not being a true team player. I would assume this has something to do with the Wahlbergs' background and the fact that he's most likely a Pats fan.

Mark is a huge patriots fan. At the ESPY's after we won SB 39 he presented coach of the year to BB. Backstage they showed the two of them talking and Mark was in awe at the three SB rings Bill was wearing. BB says, "you wanna wear them?" Classic BB!

Glad Big Ben is vertical.....the story on Fox Sports.com about him being seconds from death was scary! One would think he would be publicly swearing off motorcycles and starting a charity that promotes helmet wearing to kids......Ah, but such is life for a guy who is 20-something, rich and immortal.

Great, I'm sure Ricky Williams and Freddie Mitchell would float your boat, too. A team gives him millions of dollars, bases much of its public image and business plan on him and he owes them nothing in the way of keeping himself out of undue risk?

If the Pittsburgh Steelers want to be enablers of their spoiled little brats, be my guest.

A real organization (read: one built to last) would read that kid the riot act.

A real organization? That's rich.

Yes an organization that is built to last and doesn't have to stumble and bow to a meathead-gen-x-slacker QB who makes Ricky Williams look like a great philosopher.

He won't be doing any safety ads for helmets:

Roethlisberger says he won't do safety ads

PITTSBURGH - Ben Roethlisberger said he doesn't plan on doing public safety announcements for motorcycle or helmet safety following his accident last month.

"I don't think that's my place," the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback said in a taped interview aired Friday on ABC's "Good Morning America."

"Some people feel that, you know, I probably should be doing that and being a big advocate for that," Roethlisberger said from Los Angeles. "But for me, I'm going to let people make their own decisions ... So I don't think you'll see me doing any kind of billboards or advertisements."

Roethlisberger had been in Los Angeles for the taping of the ESPY Awards. On Friday, he was slated to play in the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship in Nevada.

Roethlisberger had seven hours of facial reconstruction surgery June 12 after ramming his motorcycle into a car that turned left in front of him on a Pittsburgh street.

Roethlisberger broke his jaw and nose when his head smashed into the car's windshield and he was thrown over the car onto the pavement. He was cited for riding without a license and not wearing a helmet.

In Friday's interview, Roethlisberger said he sometimes wears his helmet, but on the day of the accident, he forgot it.

"I had just gotten my bike all custom done. It was painted up and it was really nice," he said. "I was supposed to take my helmet that day with me to get painted to match my bike so I could wear it all the time when I rode that bike and I totally forgot it."

Kay. So he needed his helmet painted to match his bike so that he could wear it all the time, because if it doesn't look good, then you can only wear it some of the time. Like when you're planning on having an accident and such.

I'm not saying he's dumb, or still doesn't get it, but it really seems the young man has some priorities out of whack.

Re: Roethlisberger looks normal, talking normal at ESPYs

No safety ads in Ben's future, because it is not his place. Kind of like if Bruschi had said it would be ******ed for him to be seen with a bunch of stroke victims.

Life in the fast lane. Rules? I got your stinkin' rules!

Re: Roethlisberger looks normal, talking normal at ESPYs

The more Ben Roethlisberger opens his mouth, the more he sounds like Leon Spinks.

Here ya go, Closing Time. THIS is the face of your franchise. He's AAAAAALLLLLL yours!

OT: Big Ben Won't Do Motorcycle Safety Ads

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Ben Roethlisberger doesn't plan on doing public safety announcements for motorcycle or helmet safety following his accident last month.

He also said that just because people occasionally don't wear seat belts, that doesn't mean they're not seat-belt wearers.

Is it just me, or is this guy a major league jerk?

Re: Roethlisberger looks normal, talking normal at ESPYs

I'm glad that Closing Time doesn't care for the 'metro' look.

I must admit that Ben has the Herman Munster look nailed!

Re: Roethlisberger looks normal, talking normal at ESPYs

Remember right after Ben snuck out of the hospital in the middle of the night, when public sentiment was beginning to turn to what kind of immature meathead have the Steelers saddled themselves with... until the moving statement was released where Ben apologized for his behavior and the anguish he had caused his family, franchise and fanbase and assured them he had learned his lesson the hard way...the statement the talking heads immediately pointed to as proof the talented but previously self absorbed young Superbowl QB had finally grown up and would now certainly achieve his full potential in the absence of that previously maddening stubbornness and immaturity...

I knew that was his agent and the Steelers PR guy talking.

The farther away we get from his life altering accident the less contrite and mature he sounds. Ben is one of those rare individuals who can suffer a near death experience and return to his previous life virtually unchanged emotionally. That is the epitome of dumb as a brick, folks. Ben embraces his celebrity and intends to do nothing more with it than hang on for the fun ride. And rest assured Ben will ride again, sans helmet. I bet he's already pouring over catelogs and paint chips as opposed to studying film and deconstructing opponents defensive sets and a new crotch rocket will be tucked in the garage before opening night - 'cause hey, a guys gotta live his life. What good is having a multi-million dollar franchise QB gig if you can't do what makes you happy.

I'm glad the guy is alright...but this is a person who still doesn't think "the rules" apply to him. Not talking about wearing a helmet (it isn't against the law not to) I mean he doesn't really seem sorry for his actions possibly letting down the fans and his team mates. After his "minutes from death" statement (he is the only one that mentioned that medical condition...doesn't remember much else but can remember the Paramedic telling him about the bleeding he stopped in his mouth to prevent him from dying?)

This "life altering" experience did not knock one ounce of "cool" out of him, he still thinks he is "The Man" and normal things don't apply to him. I couldn't stand his reaction to the Chins statement of his motorcycle riding after the SB and every time he opens his mouth again it is all about him.

He could say something even slightly positive and possible save someones life, but NNNOOOO he says exactly the opposite and with his "standing in the community" he is actually probably ENCOURAGING those on the fence to not wear a helmet by emphasizing "thier choice" way to press the hot button there Ben, encourage all those young squeeler fans to be just like you. Idiot.

Just weighing in on how he looks.....he looks good for what he went through, no doubt, but I also think he looks so different. Perhaps it's the weight loss, perhaps the lack of facial hair, or perhaps it's the seriously freaky one eye he has that looks like a few thousand blood vessels have burst. But he looks "off" to me.

His motorcycling days behind him, Big Ben finds a new way to get a quick rush.
