This is an interesting Twist in free agency.. The Panthers only applying a 2nd round tender to Richard Marshall..

If we intend on Drafting a CB in the second round, I'd much rather us snap Marshall up instead.

Now that's a tough call, the second round pick is cheap for four years, while Marshall gets to negotiate a contract and Carolina has right of first refusal...

This is sarcasm right?

You're right, that is a tough call. Do you take a chance on a CB in the 2nd rd who may not pan out a la Wheatley, and pay him on a rookie deal? Or do you pay a decent CB like Marshall a 2nd rd tender, yet give him a lot more money?

Choices, choices.

I recall many of us having a strong eye on Marshall a few yrs ago, he has played well, and could help produce quickly in the return game.

Regardless of what happens, it's a nice find by DaBruinz, as he could be a decent pickup.

No sarcasm here.

Many draft pundits had us choosing Marshall a few yrs back. He may not be a superstar, but he certainly isn't a bust either.

A veteran CB, with great speed could at least be considered--most of us want to re-sign Bodden, but that's a whole other issue and may not pan out.

You can't put a price on good corners in this day and age.

I'd at least talk numbers with his agent. Marshall is very good.

It would cost some money but Marshall for a #2, re-sign Bodden and have Butler as the #3 and that should be a solid group. Wilhite and Wheatley could compete with whoever else is brought in for #4, #5.

And that there is the rub. The $$$. To get Marshall, you need to give a valuable 2nd round pick PLUS $$$ on top of that. It would probably make more sense to just give cash to Bodden. He knows the system already and he has performed well in it.

I know but with the rest of the secondary young and fairly cheap (Butler, Wilhite, Meriweather, Chung, Sanders), even adding Marshall and keeping Bodden I bet our secondary would only be about league average in annual salary.

last i checked, there is no positional salary cap, so this is irrelevant.

Thanks for that info :bricks:

Despite that nugget of information Belichick isn't going to tie up, say, 1/4 of his allowed spending on one position. The talent, money and acquisitions will be spread throughout the team.

This is interesting. If Bodden isn't retained, I think I'd rather just draft a CB in the 2nd round rather than giving up a 2nd rounder AND having to pay Richard Marshall. Guys like Patrick Robinson and Kareem Jackson could be available. I know people may be scared off by what happened with Wheatley, but last year was a great success with the drafting of Butler in the 2nd. I'm starting to really like Patrick Robinson.

The thing is, would drafting a CB in the 2nd round effectively replace Bodden? I can only imagine that a 2nd round CB would contribute as much as Butler did this year, needing time to adjust to our defense and the pro game. Even if we let Bodden go, I think Butler and Wilhite have great upside and will both take a step forward in 2010. But Springs is getting up there in age and Wheatley is an enigma. It might be better to add a CB with NFL experience, like Richard Marshall or maybe even Cromartie, rather than put your eggs in the basket of a rookie who will likely have an inconsistent season with limited playing time.

Hearing mixed reviews about Marshall, some Panther fans talk about how him like he's Ellis Hobbs

He's an up and coming young CB, with great speed, and decent coverage skills. While he may not have been as good as Gamble on the other side, he did have 4 INT's last year + 2 FUM rec. Add in 9 passes defended, and those come out to decent numbers.

He could help tremendously in the KR game, and has played under Pat Hill's defense at Fresno State. He was reportedly high on the Pats radar a few yrs ago in the draft.

I'm not going to touch the comparisons to E.Hobbs, because everyone here has a different opinion of what Hobbs was. To me, he was a servicable CB who at worst, was a decent nickel back. Add in Hobbs' speed in the KR game, and you got a better player at the position then a lot of our corners last year.

The bottom line would have to be cost of course, but if he signed on for a reasonable deal, I'd be willing to part with a 2nd--particularly this yr when we have a few. Whether or not we re-sign Bodden, Marshall would be a nice fit IMO.
