Rex Ryan Fired

The league has passed Rex by IMO.

It was the same when he was a Jet. The ground and pound that he loves is effective when used situationally like the Pats do it....but it should not be who you are on offense on 2016.

The man is entertaining and fun but not an NFL head coach IMO. He wouldn't be a bad collegiate coach though...

Anthony Lynn went from running backs coach to offensive coordinator to interim head coach in three months. He's like the military guy on Seinfeld who kept getting promoted because Elaine was afraid of him.

Bad teams get rewarded by getting first choice of the incoming college talent, while at the same time getting to keep their coaches.

Top teams like the Pats develop coaches so that they become sought after, and as a result they get poached and they have to start over developing their replacements.
A league that routinely fabricates rationales for stealing the Pats draft picks (because parity) is not going to even consider compensation for poached coaches. We're lucky we don't get charged penalties for coaches that leave and fail.

Underachievers to the fullest.

Did you ever think that the COACHES probably put it in their contracts that the team can't block an upwards move to another team?

would anybody be surprised if the jets hired him back?

That actually a league rule, a coach can get out of his current contract if another club offers him a "promotion".

Players can move from team to team too via free agency. The league could create a mechanism to allow compensation for losing top coaches if they wanted to.

In the past, teams paid compensation to teams for coaches on occasion but the league put a stop to it.

Jon Gruden from Oakland to Tampa was the last one I believe, and there were rumors of the Browns trading for Jim Harbaugh before he left SF.

Coaches could be considered an asset like players, particularly when a team, likd the Pats, puts so much into developing them.

Not surprised he's been fired.

I was, however, surprised that he took another job so quickly after the Jets' mess, a lot of which was legitimately not his fault but belonged on the shoulders of Tannenbaum and, of course, Woody. I always thought he should have taken a year to decompress on the Sunday morning shows and found a job away from the Pats and Belichick's "rings."

Don't cry for Rex, though. He's still due three years at $5.5 million per year under his contract.

Damn. And Miami seems happy with their coach. So it looks like Rex will have to find a job out of the division. I enjoyed having him in the division...for comic relief.

Talk about a fall from grace... From winning the Super Bowl in Week 4 to fired in Week 16.

Good point. And he won each and every April Super Bowl during his time with the Jets.

The Patriots will miss him dearly. No chance the LOLphins bring him in..... is there??

Some comments on the comments:

1. My initial reaction is that Rex got screwed. He's the guy you always thought was a decent NFL HC, but just one that wasn't as good as your HC. But DAMNED, they guy hasn't had a winning season for the last SIX years. That's getting up to Jeff Fisher range. ;) Now you are hearing how toxic the locker room was all year, and you watch the same game day coaching mistakes and lack of discipline, take place in Buffalo that were being made in NJ, and you have to wonder if the only mistake was not so much in firing him, but hiring him in the first place.

2. He'd be crazy to try and get another HC's job, or rather anyone hiring him would be the one that's crazy. Still if he got another job, then it's just one less job for McDaniels and Patricia to take.

3. So if it's true and he's actually done, then Rex NEEDS to go into TV and not back to be a DC. He'd be a natural. Not only that, he hates the Pats, so he'd fit right in at BSPN.

4. This will be Doug Whaley's 3 head coaching hire. How do you get to hire 2 HC's that fail and keep your job?

5. Adam Gase has had a great first season as HC of the Dophins, but given Todd Bowles' 2nd year experience, we might just want to wait a year before we anoint him the next best HC in the division.
