Rex Burkhead re-signed

Gillislie was our #4 RB in 2017, and therefore almost always inactive.

Perhaps the team wants to give another year to develop for us. At very least, he is worth having in camp as a competitor for the 1-2 open RB positions.

I suspect the timing of Lewis signing and Rex now re-signing is not coincidental.

I'm somewhat surprised Gill hasn't get the axe. Soon to come? Or they see something in him they think will bloom this coming season?

Loved Dion’s athletic ability but I’ll take (a healthy) Burkhead over him every time in NE’s offense. Good size, good receiver, can be a short yardage guy, can be a third down back, core STer... great player. Really happy to keep him for several years.
Ross. Thank you for your reverence towards Da Burkmeister.

Not stoked about this...guy was glass

Love Rex. Great signing. This eases the Lewis loss. Now he needs to stay healthy and he can be just as good, if not even better playmaker than Dion.

Wonderful. They let Dion go and keep the guy who can’t stay healthy and who almost took out the franchise.

Yeah, because Dion was known for his durability...

13 touches a game...that's what Dion got. 13. Love him, but it's a long-term, high-$ deal for the role.

Anyone got the numbers on Burkhead's deal?

That's crazy talk

More likely is that Gillislie has played his last game in NE. A guy they paid a relatively big contract for who was a healthy scratch throughout most of the season. Bad signing and time to move on and cut losses.

MG may be right and he'll be in the mix for a spot during camp. While I was thinking somewhat along your line with my first post -- I assumed his cap hit of 2017, 3.9m, was the same this year -- a quick check shows Gill to be relatively inexpensive for 2018. Sportstrac has it at 2.2m for this year.

Based on 2.2m (and where prices have gone this year) Gill is going to be in camp and probably is going to be on the 53 if his camp is satisfactory.

Might even be able to pick up a big bruising short yardage specialist in the 6th or even 7th round.

LSUs Darel Williams would fit the mold.

Not impressed. You guys are dancing on the roof over this mediocre signing.

Burkhead was almost invisible last season.
Bolden brings nothing the offense anymore.
Gillislie is a Bench Warmer and should be sent down the road.

Burkhead-almost invisible. Except for the fact he scored 8 tds in the 10 games he played. Including 7 tds in a 6 game stretch in the middle of the season.

Bolden-special teams

Gilleslie-no argument there but maybe his price is cheap enough that we give him another look during preseason.

Are you nuts? Burkhead played 10 games (missed six due to injury.) He mixed time with Lewis and White, which also made his injury recovery less urgent; not sure how long he'd have missed, but probably less if they didn't already have two great versatile backs.

Burkhead had, in 10 games, 264 yards rushig (4.1 ypc) and 254 yards receiving (30 receptions on 36 targets), to go along with EIGHT touchdowns. Of White, Lewis, and Burkhead, Burkhead is clearly the better of the red zone backs.

With White and Burkhead, the Patriots still have two excellent, highly competent backs. I loved having Lewis, and he was among my favorite players, but the Patriots are still in terrific shape and Burkhead was far from invisible. They do need a power back, though, and Gillislie is not the answer.

I am waiting to see the contract.

I think we get about 85% of Lewis with bulkhead. If it is a good price, then I think it is a good trade off for a tb12 led team.

Burkhead is nothing more than a situational player and has shown nothing where he can be the lead RB like Lewis. You guys act like every Patriot FA is a pro bowler and a must keep. Burkhead had some TDs rushing from the goal line and a pass here or there. Big deal.

Burkhead had 4 rushes for 23 yards and caught 1 pass for 46 yards in 3 post season games.
No show for Tenn, 1 rush for 5 vs Jax and 3 rushes for 18 and 1 pass for 46. A situational player who disappears and yall are getting champagne ready on ice over this signing.

Lewis and Andelman will be missed because they were work horses. Burkhead is not.

Not a bad deal, less than James White and about the same average as Gilislee.
