This smells a lot like tampering to me.

Texans: "While you're negotiating with the Pats to renew your contract, keep in mind that we want to offer you a fat, fat bundle, too."

If the Texans are making themselves a party to the Casserio/Patriots negotiations by dropping not so subtle hints to Nick C then, in my book, that's tampering.

Well, it’s about a year away, no use worrying about it.

Unless he starts scouting players for the Texans as well as the Pats.
If there is any inkling of that as well trade him for picks now

Actually, I read what was posted and I disagree with your interpretation. It is clear Florio’s post is referring to football operations personnel.

lol!! Who peed in your corn flakes this morning?

Your point makes even less sense than his. If the passenger Florio quoted doesn’t apply to football related personnel, then whom does it apply to? Janitors and parking attendants?

Yes, I understand the clause is in his contract but what I am saying is that if it violated a league rule, the clause would be declared void upon appeal.

So if push came to shove and Caserio and the Texans moved forward (which we all know isn’t happening but let’s speak hypothetically here) then whom do you think would make the decision about the validity of that clause in his contract?

I’ll give you a hint: the guy who would be making the decision doesn’t like the Patriots that much.

I do not believe it violated a league rule.

I would presume he is gone. Pats are in damage control mode. Trying to get some compensation for losing him by filing charges. It's a shame Krafty won't pay assistants or front office people enough to retain them.

This. Well, I’m not saying I agree he’d fire O’Brien but yes, Caserio would be the boss. On most teams the GM is the boss.

We’re all just speculating on all this, but what really needs to be considered is something none of us know: What does Caserio want? Would he rather be the #2 guy on a stable championship contender, or does he feel he’s accomplished all that he can here in NE and that he wants the challenge of being the #1 guy, albeit in with far less stable franchise? If he wants to be #1, is he willing to wait for Belichick to retire or does he want to strike while the iron is hot?

These are things which we simply don’t know and can’t know. I guess we will find out in about 9 months or so.

Well if a guy has one foot out the door, it’s tough not to be thinking about that next assignment. It’s really just human nature, even if it isn’t being deliberately done.

It seems that reasonable minds can disagree on this matter but I’ll ask again: if push came to shove, who would be the one interpreting league rules and making the decision on the validity of the clause in question?

    Rubbish.

The real reason why Josh, Weis, RAC, BOB, Josh, Fatt Matt, Pioli, Ratboy, Quinn, Robinson, Dimitroff, Flores and Licht left is they all desired career advancement and wanted Bill's job. Since Bill isn't going anywhere, they left for promotions.

You assume the Patriots simply didn’t do their homework regarding league rules on contracts. A truly sound assumption given Belichick's well known lack of attention to detail. You also assume Caserio wants to leave, with absolutely nothing to support it.

Goody or the US Supreme Court. All depends how far Bob and Goody want to take it.

Hypothetically Nick can sue the Patriots in an attempt to get out of the deal but he has a .00000001% chance of actually winning. He signed it and wasn't under duress when he did. He was also compensated handsomely so good luck finding a sympathetic judge.

I think fans are getting wrapped around the axle over this provision. At any time the NEP can grant another team permission to interview Caserio. It's not like hes the Man in the Iron Mask locked away in Bastille somewhere.

    ^THIS

Best scenario I can see would be Texans sit on their hands for months without hiring a GM in hopes of landing Caserio when his contract expires, and then sometime around Christmas have him and the Patriots announce a five-year extension.
