Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald reported on Thursday that first round draft choice Devin McCourty is in town, which is hopefully a sign that a deal for the rookie may also be getting closer.
The Patriots' rookies are set to report to Foxboro on Sunday, and the fact that McCourty is in the area is certainly promising. He's also set to be in spending tonight from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Modell's Sporting Goods store in Medford where he'll reportedly be talking with Pop Warner players about their youth football experiences, along with working with their coaches. Teammate Julian Edelman is also in Brockton tonight doing the same thing.
Contract negotiations for the rookie have seemed to have moved along pretty smoothly, with the newspaper also reporting a couple of days ago that talks were well underway, and that his agent - Andy Simms - sounded pretty confident that they'd get a deal done in time for this weekend.
"There's not a lot to discuss or report at this point, but we are speaking and have been the last couple of weeks," Simms told the Herald Monday. "Obviously, it's a slow process. There's some issues with the pending lockout, and working with option bonuses, but we've pretty much have figured out the best way to structure the deal and I'm very optimistic we're going to get a deal done on time and I think the Patriots would say the same thing."
