Reiss suggests the Pats might be concerned with Butler off the field

As I posted earlier, Reiss carried Kraft's water during the Welker exit saga......as if they were joined at the hip. He is the fourth Kraft son according to some of his peers

What about the Welker reporting was inaccurate? My understanding was Welker misjudged his value on the open market and the Pats moved on first. I don't remember any hit pieces by Reiss as part of that (but I don't remember much of today, much less years ago).

All I've got to say is @Ian went full guard dog mode on us.

I was afraid to log in for awhile.

I've always gotten the sense that ESPN calls the shots and that he has an editor there that decides what goes out.

I believe Reiss when he says he thought it read differently (that's happened to everyone who has ever written anything), but I doubt he gets to tell the ESPN editor to read these pieces better or not publish them.

If you have an editor/proofreader, and that person doesn't catch something as obvious as this article, you might as well not have an editor/proofreader. So, if you've got one, you either read him the riot act and ensure that this doesn't happen again, or you get rid of him.

Even the idiots currently running ESPN should be smart enough to understand that.

Mighty impressed to see most of the fans - who all like Reiss a lot - not hesitating to call him out for what they feel as irresponsible/unfair/biased reporting.

Regarding Welker, Reiss posted nothing inaccurate and nothing malicious. IMO, Reiss did post Krafts opinions as if they were his own...at a time in Reiss' career when he never offered opinions...only facts and info.
A few weeks later , Kraft finally went public with his personal sentiments on the Welker matter....using phrases identical to Reiss' earlier position pieces. Do the math.

My suspicious nature now compels me to associate Reiss' current opining with that past attempt and I instinctively include one or more Krafts in my conspiracy theory. I don't doubt Reiss' current position, especially since it is my personal opinion he is being fed the info. I'm just not a fan of unsupported defamation......and after reading his clarification/apology......his premise is absurd. Funny how bachelor/men of the world players like Edelman and Gronk managed to navigate past the marriage/singular focus criteria Reiss is throwing at the wall ...but Butler gets red flagged.
If there is more to the story Mike.....bring it. This "soft" attack has been ineffective. I fully expect more negative info to be released eventually.
My glass is half empty today

Unless the editor/proofreader is the one calling the shots. I think there's a reason the apology is on his personal site.

Was there more to his opinion than Welker priced himself beyond the market? Honestly, I don't remember Reiss doing more than that, but he very well could have and I've long since forgotten.

No editor is above the author in the sense I'm talking about.

I think a better Occam's Razor theory is this: one in hand is worth two in the bush. The Patriots need an elite corner, they weren't sure they could come to financial terms with Butler, due to a discrepancy in both sides expectations, and Gilmore, while expensive, was willing to sign the dotted line on the contract. The Patriots took what they knew they could get, rather than risking not having an elite/very good cornerback in their secondary. We all saw what that secondary was like for many years with a bunch of JAGs out there.

This is very rarely how it works in a newsroom. And Reiss has a young family to support. If he could tell them to F off, I'm sure he would have years ago.

I grant that I've never dealt as an insider in a major media outlet. However, the next media outlet, of any size, that I go to where editors get to shirk responsibility for screwing up their job of editing/proofreading writers' work, will be the first.

And I'll leave it at that.

Sure, but you've never had a boss who screws up and doesn't get held accountable because the company has bigger issues or just doesn't care? Newsrooms work the same way. Accountability only works if the organization cares about it. And this is ESPN we're talking about.

There's no but here.

After reading the mea culpa I still don't get his premise or rather disagree. I agree with borg, Malcolm's 26 years old, Jules was having 1 nighters at 28 after a SB win with a photo op, Dola isn't married yet(dating someone), Gronk....well Gronk. Trying to uncover the Butler mystery he only added another layer...

Just heard that Reiss sent out an apology to Butler to clear this up. He said it was taken out of context and tried to explain what he meant was Gilmore being married has more of a responsibility. Hmmm

there will be no offer..if he comes to terms on a contract with the Saints, he will then be traded.
eh, we'll see. Unless you have one of those eavesdropping microwaves none of us really know for sure.

Reiss just acknowledged on Twitter that it was an "incomplete piece" by him.
If by "incomplete" he means the "piece" provided vague, potentially defamatory gossip, then I would agree with his self-assessment.
