Rap: Mayo is the new HC

"Not everything is about skin color"... except for all the times it is, along with all the millions of dollars Kraft pours into racial/ethnically motivated initiatives (not just skin color... race). You're just choosing to selectively apply it and block it out when it's inconvenient.
What I said is selective in the sense that it’s my opinion, nothing more. Your stance is that the Mayo hire was based completely on race, ethnicity etc,. I disagree with that.

You can choose to play the race card if you want. Quite frankly, it’s a lazy argument and I’m tired of it always being used to denigrate and divide instead of looking at complex issues intelligently.

The Krafts obviously saw something in Mr. Mayo and felt strongly enough to give him an opportunity. The Krafts are also astute businessmen and they’re not just going to turn over the keys of a billion dollar asset to someone based exclusively on his look.

Mrs. Mayo may want to learn that twitters likes are public lmao

I don’t think the track record in the nfl for these kind of moves has been very good. Long time coach replaced by one of his assistants.
Ray Handley, Al Groh, Les Steckles, Richie Petibone come to mind. On the + side was George Seifert. Can anyone think of other examples?
Kraft have been pretty lucky maybe he's pushing his luck.

Steve is probably still under contract, so if Mayo wants to keep him, it might not be Steve's choice to make. Same with BOB.
I expect BB worked all that out with Kraft in their meetings.
I also think BB would be very happy for Steve to become Mayo's DC, just because he's a Dad!

Nothing agaist mayo but it seems they did BB dirty by signing im has a future HC even with Bill around. BB was a lame duck coach walking all season and maybe mayo is curran's source.
Worst case scenario if we get more of what we’ve had the last 3 years. We get a new hc and make a splashier hire

Demeco Ryan’s was on Kyle Shanahans staff. He wasn’t promoted from within

I said Ryans was a more apt comparison than Singletary, I didn't say it was an exact. Stop moving the ****ing goal posts

Wade and Bryant, Tavai and Bentley, Peppers...all of them improved greatly under that direction.

That for me is the key here. Is there a single player on the offense that clearly improved over the last few years? Onwenu and Andrews were always good. Douglas has innate talent but still screws up routes. Coaches can't play, but they can help players improve within the limits of their athletic ability and they can motivate players to some limited extent.

On game management, Bill has not kept up with the times. Overly cautious on 4th downs. And of course on cap and roster management Bill has done poorly - so that will likely be an upgrade. Defensive game playing we don't know yet - we can't tell how much was Bill and how much the other coaches.

Well if it blows up it krafts face. We can make a splashier hire in 2-3 years. I’m willing to give him a chance.

This is a very good part of the hiring . The defense fought its ass off even when undermanned and getting no help. Jerod here hopefully seals that we can carry the same group over with judon and Gonzalez.
Good stuff. Can’t underestimate the players feelings and they clearly want Mayo. Makes me feel all the better. If the players want Mayo over Vrabel we should try it.

I have faith in Mayo as HC, I’m more concerned with the offensive coaching and GM positions.

I feel like people aren't getting that Bill was fired as GM more than as head coach. The odds Mayo is a better tactician out of the gate than Bill is zero, but that's not why Bill was fired. It was so someone else could be GM and get some goddamn talent, especially on offense.

If they hire an internal GM it was probably whoever Bill vetoed to keep taking defense and special teams jamokes in the last draft.
I am sure an Elite WR will come from this now we'll have people on Offense who keeps DC's up at night and not Over Drafted ST's aces.

I hope Steve stays because he's good at his job and it would be really interesting to see him grow out of the shadow of his dad, but if he doesn't, I think Demarcus Covington is ready for the role too.

Either way, the offensive and special teams staff changes are a lot more important.
I’d be fine with Steve staying. He’s probably been the least of our problems when it comes to the positional coaching (aside from Mayo of course). I have a feeling he might follow his father but maybe Bill wants him to try to branch out on his own. Could be one reason that Bill agreed to that little PR thing yesterday.

This will be Kraft’s legacy.

He made ONE good hire in BB, but consistently rolled over and did not defend BB and Brady with the attacks from Goodell et al.

There are also rumblings that he meddled and undercut BB.

Now he has to find a GM and GM/Mayo need to fill out the coaching staff and management infrastructure.

If they succeed, then Kraft comes out smelling like roses,

If not, then Kraft’s reputation is forever tarnished, and he will be seen as a meddling owner, who undermined the best HC the NFL ever saw.

Looking forward to seeing what happens, this is fun

Also, interested to see where Belichick lands, gives him a good shot at the record, and will give me another team to root for

Really the only thing that would put me in a sour mood is Mayo saying anything along the lines of "we'll give Mac Jones a chance to compete in training camp"

You're joking, but unless he's cut or traded, I would expect Mayo to say exactly that. If for no other reason than, if Mac is beat out (which he should be), it helps facilitate a trade. Not a lot of benefit to publicly ruling any player out of a job.

Of course it can. 4 wins, 2,5,6,8 is all the same thing.
It’s a matter of how far you are away from becoming a good team and that isn’t measured in wins and losses necessarily. Improvement in the nfl is rarely linear and gradual. Teams improve because they are pretty close big have a fatal flaw, then they fix it. That fatal flaw can have you stuck in mediocrity or looking awful.
Honestly this team now has nothing to point to that can give you hope or has proven successful in the past.
We gave wiped out the winning history and are starting over with the least experienced people out there
It’s going to be a bumpy ride.
Not with a Competent or Good QB you see how quickly stability at that position can quickly fix things.

Great choice, meritocracy has many merits. He was always the heir apparent, good to see Kraft kept his promise.
He will have to surround himself with a great OC (McDaniels?) and a new DC, as well as look at Achord and his ST's.
I hope the FO brain trust can deliver as they should..
A new chapter begins..
The learning curve is not as great as it might be as he knows the players and their capabilities..

Spot on.

Not even interviewing people and asking how they'd go about rebuilding this team and what coaches they would hire seems like a mistake.
After Bill I don't think they were going to let the HC go about the actual rebuilding. They want a systems of check and balances and have people who are accountable to other people and not one emperor who people feel like they can't say no to.
