Rap: Mayo is the new HC

Good stuff. Can’t underestimate the players feelings and they clearly want Mayo. Makes me feel all the better. If the players want Mayo over Vrabel we should try it.

I have faith in Mayo as HC, I’m more concerned with the offensive coaching and GM positions.

yes This way it doesn’t feel AS much like the effort by the defense went to waste because I think some of the depth really proved themselves. To finish 7th in yards allowed is pretty awesome for all the injuries. They were 15th in points but im not sure how different itd be without the non defensive tds factored in, unable to find that metric online but im pretty sure it is somewhere.

You're joking, but unless he's cut or traded, I would expect Mayo to say exactly that. If for no other reason than, if Mac is beat out (which he should be), it helps facilitate a trade. Not a lot of benefit to publicly ruling any player out of a job.
We could realistically keep Mac for this year and pass on the Fifth year option still need a backup in this League. Let him and the Rookie compete our Talent at the skilled positions leaves a lot to be desired. We need a True #1 WR and TE to begin.

No, there was language in his contract that says he was the successor which allow the Patriots to avoid the Rooney rule
How is it avoiding the Rooney Rule? Hes Black.

If he was White then they need to adhere to the Rooney Rule and interview a Black candidate.

I feel like people aren't getting that Bill was fired as GM more than as head coach. The odds Mayo is a better tactician out of the gate than Bill is zero, but that's not why Bill was fired. It was so someone else could be GM and get some goddamn talent, especially on offense.

If they hire an internal GM it was probably whoever Bill vetoed to keep taking defense and special teams jamokes in the last draft.
Bingo

That for me is the key here. Is there a single player on the offense that clearly improved over the last few years? Onwenu and Andrews were always good. Douglas has innate talent but still screws up routes. Coaches can't play, but they can help players improve within the limits of their athletic ability and they can motivate players to some limited extent.

On game management, Bill has not kept up with the times. Overly cautious on 4th downs. And of course on cap and roster management Bill has done poorly - so that will likely be an upgrade. Defensive game playing we don't know yet - we can't tell how much was Bill and how much the other coaches.
Thank you: that ^ is for the we should have just kept BB Crowd yeah he has really kept up with the times. Remember we finished at or near the Bottom of the Division the last two years with the GOAT at the helm. The AFC East is a Tough Division the Bills are not Done! the Jets could have Rodgers for two years and Miami with their Speed Hmmmmm.

Not many beat guys are more tied in than Curran. He had lots of Brady sources in the Brady camp and it looks like he like has sources in the Mayo camp (or maybe even someone close to the Kraft's). The only one who may be more tied in than Curran is Reiss but Reiss isn't really a news breaker type. He seems to float things he knows/heard as opinion or splice them into his notes column every week.
Mayo was on Quick Slants, so Mayo is probably his source.

You mean like when BB was here a day ago? Some of you deep thinkers scare me.

Now that BB is gone, I would not exclude the possibility they keep Mac for one more year as a reclamation project to build his trade value and to serve as a bridge/backup for new QB they bring in. Would rather this than bring back Zappe. Zappe needs to be gone

This will be Kraft’s legacy.

He made ONE good hire in BB, but consistently rolled over and did not defend BB and Brady with the attacks from Goodell et al.

There are also rumblings that he meddled and undercut BB.

Now he has to find a GM and GM/Mayo need to fill out the coaching staff and management infrastructure.

If they succeed, then Kraft comes out smelling like roses,

If not, then Kraft’s reputation is forever tarnished, and he will be seen as a meddling owner, who undermined the best HC the NFL ever saw.
Kraft's legacy is owning a team that went to 1 Super Bowl through the first 27 years of the era and then within 2 years his team went to the first of 10 over the next 30 years.

If people are going to argue that Bill without Tom's resume doesn't matter, the same is true for Kraft. This isn't going to be viewed as a Jerry Jones undercutting Jimmy Johnson because he got jealous after 5 years. Kraft kept Bill here for a quarter of a century into his 70's.

I feel like the people pining for Vrabel missed that his split with TN ownership was partly because he wanted GM powers and the ownership (who is also super dumb in general, let's be clear) balked at it. The whole thing that got Belichick fired was him being a bad GM for years to the point where his coaching finally couldn't salvage it.

Even if Mayo wasn't the planned successor, Vrabel didn't mesh with what the Pats were trying to change by getting rid of Bill.

and yet people werent willing to give Bill a chance with a new QB and a good draft position....
Dude get the...

Steve is probably still under contract, so if Mayo wants to keep him, it might not be Steve's choice to make. Same with BOB.
He's under contract, but if he gets offered a better job (DC) with another team (say, Atlanta), then he can take the job with no repercussions.

After what BB did to Mac I am sure Mac is doing this inside.

Doesn't matter what Mayo is. Rooney Rule requires that you interview 2 candidates that are minorities and that don't work for your team already. Mayo is already employed by NE so he would not be able to satisfy any part of the Rooney Rule. However, his special clause in his contract lets them subvert the rule.

FTR: dude I wanted BB nowhere near our 2024 Draft Class he's screwed up enough of our Draft classes.

So a rookie HC and rookie QB are the answer? Not a future HOF HC and a rookie QB?

Lets be real when it came to it we all wanted Mac Jones based on our draft position and who we could realistically get. He banged in his rookie season and we made the playoffs. So he was the obvious choice to continue with in 2022 as the starter, why would you not expect him to get even better?

Problem was we then wasted 2022 because he was up and down an starting to look like he wasn't the answer. However, we finished 8-9 and had Matt ****ing Patricia as OC (bills fault) so we all blamed that and thought Mac gets another chance in 2023.

Only this year (albeit many of us had given up on him last year) has everyone started to fully accept he is ****e and that we need a QB. So regardless of coach we would now be in the market for a QB and to rectify the issue. I'd much rather have given Bill that chance than a rookie HC and then let Mayo take over next year when hopefully the QB position is stable.

He had a chance with a new QB. He had Mac. Mac declined under him. This wasn't just "oh they drafted a total bum". They drafted a guy who in year one was considered the best of his class and within 3 years was considered a total dud. We also saw his back up QB being trash as well. We also saw the line and receivers independently being just awful and amongst the worst if not worst in the league. Bill had since 2019 to fix up an offense that was letting Tom Brady down. Let's not pretend he didn't get a fair chance.

GM solved that problem not a new HC.

Only question to me is whether Bill refused to accept that setup.
