In the NFL, QB apprenticeship/mentoring is typically a fan-media creation. The last thing the starter wants is to help the guy who's going to cost him his job.

Realistically, Brady would be threatened by a physically bigger, stronger QB who was also anointed his successor. He would have the kid shipped out of town, or the Pats would have to dump Brady.

Quarterbacks have huge egos, and successions seldom occur without ill will and animosity.

Say what you will, but he is around Brady every day and learns first of all what is expected from a big time QB in a great franchise...

Then on the practice field he learns minimally by osmosis...

The QB coach also spends time with him as well...

I don't think I would use the term hilarious, but it is eerily similar to the way this forum was in the week leading up to the games at Buffalo and Pittsburgh. There was far more concern here prior to the games against the Dolphins and Raiders than there was for either of the Bills game or the Steelers game.

I like Hoyer. No he hasn't gotten on the field much but then there is that matter of the future Hall Of Fame Q.B. playing in front of him. He's got talent and its been on display in the pre-seasons he's gone through. I'd trust him if Brady went down. I am certain that when he leaves the PATS as will certainly happen, he will start for someone else.

Hell, he's a damn sight better than Sanchez, the Dolt's Q.B. and whoever is now throwing in Miami. Ease up....

I like Hoyer too. He's a good back up. Could he preform well in spot duty? Yes. Beyond that, I have my doubts. I'd like to see a much larger body of work than 42 attempts before I draw any conclusions about his ability to start on a consistent basis in the NFL.

As for preseason, he was inconsistent this year. He played well against JAX. Against TB and DET, not so much. Even with his struggles and seemingly lack of progress, would you really take Hoyer over Sanchez? I guess time will tell.

Yes indeed, and IIRC last year when Green Bay gave us a visit, they also gave us a little headache with backup QB Matt Flynn. I believe he threw three touchdown passes. Did he look so good because of our lack of preparation resources? Or because he is a pretty good backup? Perhaps a bit a bit of both...

Thankfully we walked away with a win, and Connolly looked like Devin Hester lol.

Anyway I think A crippled GB team being led by a backup is far better than a crippled KC team being led by a backup.

Yes but RS means 1 can still practice w/ the team. I am wondering how he looks @ practice from the reports that I know certain ppl w/ connections have.

I don't know what will come later on in this thread, but my guess is that any people with real "connections" in the Patriots organization wouldn't be talking; that's why they are connected in the first place...they are trusted to keep their mouths shut.

So, I'll take anything from someone claiming to know something with a very large grain of salt.

Even harder to break down one who didn't play in college.

Hmm...who was that guy. Played for some team in the Northeast. Never played in college, never started in the NFL then went 11-5 his first season playing.

I think his first name was Mike or Matt and his last name was Fort or maybe Castle.

Yes.... and, as history has shown us, even fans from his first team, who knew him better than fans from other teams, were largely clueless about his skills and ability.

However, if you'd like to start a Chiefs/Patriots thread by breaking down the abilities/weaknesses of Palko on an NFL level, I'm sure that a lot of us would be happy to read your O.P..

I have no idea what Palko's abilities and weaknesses are. I do know that a lot of people both here and else where figured NE would have a losing season when Brady went down, nobody thought Matt Flynn would throw more TDs last year in our game against GB, the backup of the chargers would out play Peyton Manning, etc.

I hear you, and I see where my response looks as if I was deliberately being snarky, so my apologies. I was actually serious, because I'm sure people would like some insight on the kid. What little I know is from Chiefs training camp reports, and I'd love to read more.

Backups at QB are a lot like backups at any position in one respect...some emerge out of nowhere and some never make it despite measurables prognostications and impressive collegiate resumes... KOC had a full camp and a season as the #2 here and then Hoyer impressed sufficiently as a rookie to knock him and a 2nd year UDFA off the roster. Cassel pushed the veteran #2 QB here into retirement and never looked back despite his critics. Even so, he's no replacement for Brady. Just a decent NFL starter who is above league average under the right circumstances, and not nearly a savior absent them.

We won't know what Mallett is until next May when mini camps happen or more likely in August when camp is underway. And likely neither will the coaches. If he's still the #3 here in 2012 he may still have a shot at becoming a #2 or that may hint at failure to develop sufficiently at least within the confines of this system to ever be a starter. Measurables are enticing to most scouts and fans. The skillset that makes or breaks a QB in this system however rests heavily on intangibles and resides largely between the ears... Temperament (a unique balanced combination of self confidence and humility), the drive to constantly improve your game, devotion to detail and coachability, poise under pressure (on and off the field), instinctive pocket presence, field vision and disciplined patience in the face of adversity, adaptability, and probably most significantly the inherrent ability retain and process myriad information in the moment and utilize it seemlessly to make quick, correct decisions consistently.

It helps to be tall and have a strong arm and the theoretical ability to make all the throws - but that alone will only take you so far particularly here... It merely gets you a shot at making it at this level.

I agree. I'm never all that comfortable when the Patriots go up against a guy they have no film on.

I think Belichick would rather prepare for the "known" than the "unknown" as well.

I think that helped Brady when he first went from a 6th round 4th string QB to starter in about a year. No one had any tape on him and Belichick used it to their advantage.

And once again, in Cassel's case we know how training camp and pre-season don't necessarily offer many insights into one's ability to be a decent starter either.

I'd prefer to see the Pats go up against the known of Matt Cassell than the unknown of a backup.

I know that defies logic in some ways but I've seen too many teams struggle against unknown quantities at QB - Cassel and Brady among them.
