Will we know anything about how he is doing or how he looks this year? I'm not use to 3 QB's... will we only know Mallett when we see him on the field as a QB 2?

QB 2's and QB 3's sit is preseason the only taste we get of Mallett?

Hoyer is proven. Mallett is TBD. can we surmise any positive things from practice? I know we can... if so what have you been hearing? I know some ppl on here have connections to or are affiliated with the inner-working of the Pats. What is the word?

This is a red shirt year for Mallett. He will not be activated unless the Pats lock up everything they can.

Yes but RS means 1 can still practice w/ the team. I am wondering how he looks @ practice from the reports that I know certain ppl w/ connections have.

whatever his progress, he has got to look better than sanchez looks for the jets tonight- they traded up for the 5th overall pick and he will never lead them to a superbowl win- gotta feel good about that!

I'd be hesitant to believe any reports from connections. The media only sees warmups, not practices. Any leaked reports from practices would most likely either be (a) utter BS that somebody made up, or (b) some misinformation leaked for a specific purpose.

On top of that typically the starter gets a large majority of the snaps and the backup gets pretty much the rest. The third-string QB is instructed to emulate the upcoming opposing QB. I don't know how well you can assess Ryan Mallett based on him trying to be Mark Sanchez or Tyler Palko.

Even if we did hear how he was doing in practice, I wouldn't put much stock into it.

Jmt57 hit it right on the head. Media reports in this case (3rd string QB) aren't going to mean too much..if anything at all.

There are positives that we have all received from the drafting of Ryan Mallett.

1. He has not lived up to any kind of "party" reputation, and has kept his mouth shut, stayed out of the media/interviews/clubs, has tried to learn, and done his job up to this point. I see this as a very good sign.

2. He was rated as the highest raw talent QB in the draft, and BB seemed to be able to look past any type of off-field behaviors in assessing said talent. He was an absolute steal, in my opinion.

3. He looked OK for a raw rookie coming out of school and trying to learn a complex offense, at least in some of the pre-season action that we saw.

4. He provides adequate depth in a position of great importance, and gives us a good 3 QB roster.

That is pretty much all that we know at this point, as it was not an "immediate needs" draft pick, and it was one of luxury/depth/and an eye towards the future.

I'm just as excited as anyone about him being a possible steal, but:

1. I heard he got drunk one night during rookie orientation and

2. He was in attendance with Edleman during the groping incident.

Can anyone here confirm this??

As far as public drunkenness and doing drugs in college...*****, if you went to college and didn't do these kind of things, you got gypped.

The Amherst town cops knew me well enough to give me a nick name.

Hoyer is proven as what? Please explain. Thanks.

The whole idea of redshirting this kid, will not only allow him to mature psychologically, but gives a whole year to become acclamated to the culture of the NFL and how to play QB in the NFL... under the tutelage of the best qb in the league.

As a UMass alum, this made me smile.

On another note, did you know that Wings has a signed Ihedigbo Jets jersey on the wall? They should replace it with a Patriots one =)

Edit: I just read Ihedigbo's bio and he's from Amherst. I did not know that.

Physically, the kid is a super-Bledsoe -- bigger, stronger, better cannon arm, but with more Brady-like pocket presence. Would be nice to see him get some regular season snaps.

I agree that Mallett was a steal but I for one disagree with BB pissing away 2 fairly high picks (3rd rounders) on QBs. This 2011 team has holes. I can't believe that one of the best 90 college players could not have helped this team at CB, KR, safety, whatever. Mallett brings this playoff bound team nothing.

Disagree on your disagreement for a couple of reasons. First, Mallet and O'Connell are attempts to minimize the probability that the Patriots pull a Colts if Brady goes down for a season or a career. I think a draft pick (mid to late 3rd rounder) that has a historic 30% to 40% of producing a quality NFL player by Year 3 of their career is reasonable insurance, especially when the players picked are physically talented but had other flags.

Secondly, as we have seen mid to late 3rd rounders are not guaranteed to get on the field (for any team) and/or perform at a high level, especially as a rookie [see Price, see Tate, see Vereen, see most 3rd rounders drafted this year... ] Picking a safety at #73 does not guarantee a first year starter (the only 3rd safety drafted after Mallet is a spot player. Picking a CB at #73 is meh, as the 6 CBs drafted in the 3rd round after Mallet aren't setting the world on fire this year either.

Progress report on Mallett:

He is progressing enough that Belichick is willing to keep a roster spot open for him and pay his salary (unlike Haynesworth)

He is not progressing enough for BB to bench Brady and have Mallett play instead.

YOu all think he's the QB of the future or just a backup?

Wasn't it Brady that got drunk and fell down the stairs hurting his throwing shoulder in the process. The result was that he appeared on the Injury Report for 6 years in a row as Pribable! Not comparing Brady to Mallet, just saying that players can get drunk and do dumb stuff, as long as it's legal and does cause harm to other....who the he!! cares!!!

BB always has an eye towards the future while looking at the present. Mallett was a steal with alot of raw talent dropping to that round so he pounced. this is a league where Franchise QB's run the day. I would hate to be in the Colts position where there is no one to replace manning/even spell him when hes out.

instead of being the vikings or carolina having to throw your rookie QB out there to "learn on the fly" basically giving up a season as a "learning experience" you let him learn from one of the best Brady while he sits on the bench for 3-4years.

Amazing to think what might have happened if Favre actively taught Aaron Rodgers.
