I had forgotten that starting last year there are three stages of roster cutdown dates. It used to be down to 75 players after the third preseason game, then 53 after the fourth game.

Also the final roster cuts are earlier; they used to be on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend.

1. - August 17 (after the first preseason game) clubs must reduce rosters to a maximum of 85 players.
2. - August 24 (after the second preseason game) clubs must reduce rosters to a maximum of 80 players.
3. - August 31 (after the third preseason game) clubs must reduce rosters to a maximum of 53 players.
