I'd be fine with Vrabel, Flores, McDaniels or BOB

Hiring a defensive coach would be risky because they can't afford to change offensive systems on Maye again, so they can't hire a young gun OC who will leave in a year. For that reason, I'd lean BOB, who did a good job in Houston & could win at a high level with Maye.

Aside from maybe Flores that list of retreads feels just like our OL roster - meh, meh, and more meh.

Coaches with Patriot ties
.Flores
.Mcdaniels
.Vrabel.
. Kingsbury

New Blood
. Ben Johnson
. Bobby Slowik

To me these are the only options

Thoughts?
.
Flo as HC, slowik as OC... I believe Johnson is going to sit and wait for a better coaching opportunity and it may be in Cincinnati.

Billy O was not a bad HC. He, like Bill, just shouldn’t be in charge of personnel.

Spags wouldn’t be bad, Sark already makes more than Kraft would likely pay him, I don’t want another rookie HC so Johnson is a no for me.

I dead ass would take Gruden or Vrabel. Both would be better.

I think we need to be realistic as to who might be willing to join us. We have a pretty neat upcoming QB with sky high potential but a very poor roster and culture and of course terrible tax and weather climate.

What this means is that our options are every limited to attracting the best coaching talent unless we start early and provide guarantees in terms of continuity as well as salary. Considering how the experience with mayo has gone, no way can we take another rookie hc unless it's Ben Johnson.

But let's be realistic why will they want to come here when the open options include

1- Bengals
2- Bills
3 - eagles
4- cowboys
5 - jaguars

Jets , raiders could be remote possibilities.

Our Pluses - Drake maye, cap space and possibly top 3 draft pick .

Goals for next year - build organization ground up.

Now who can do that ? Only an experienced HC who has seen failures before and is probably more wiser now.

Flores ,Vrabel and Kingsbury only seem like choices. But Kingsbury might have more suitors .

Flores is controversial but can probably work out. I don't see anybody else who can uplift us.

Need to focus on offensive minded candidates who will bring their system with them. That way the ever revolving door at OC has very little impact on Maye.

1. Steve Belichick - yeah, I went there! he should be the DC this year...wanna see the melt down it would cause if it happened...
2. Ben Johnson, Detroit Rock City... the sustained turn around of Goff has to be one of the best things we've seen
3. Kellen Moore, Philthydelphia Iggles, may need more maturing, but his O's have moved the ball, scored points
4. Joe Brady, Barfalo Bills... Look, how can we not investigate a candidate with the name "Brady"...
5. Liam Coen, Tampon Bay Buckanears - don't think he's ready, but damn he's done well with Baker... Bonus, he's from RI
6. Kliff Kingsbury, Washington Redskins Commies... maybe he learned some lessons of what not to do?

Before the decision was made my preference in order was…

Vrabel
Kingsbury
Flores
Mayo

No young HC unless they have worked off under a stud HC for over 6-8 years as OC with game planning responsibilities or they come from a lengthy football lineage like harbaugh, belichick , Sean mcvay, shanahan or Matt lafleur

Josh would have been my first choice for most of the last decade. I don't think that was really on the table last off-season so Flores was actually who I wanted.

This time I don't think I want someone off the Bill tree. But I also don't want a first time head coach either. So I think we need to dig deeper and find someone with experience.

Would Spagnola be option? Though I also think I'd prefer someone offensive minded.

Why'd Josh have to go take that Raider job. It killed any chance Mac had and it killed his own HC chances. But I suppose he gets to keep that 50 mil.

Any offensive minded HC with a ring as an assistant and on their second attempt at being a head coach would be what I'm looking for.
McDaniels??? You mean based on his illustrious career in two stints as a head coach where he was beloved and revered by all…

Fool me once shame on you…fool me twice shame on me.

You obviously missed part where I said for most of the last decade and that it was off the table (I suppose I should have said it was off the table because he was still fresh off his second stint but I figured everyone could assume that).

Remember how switching O coaches at the Jets worked out for Gino Smith and Sam Darnold?? That is a danger here.
AVP was not the first choice for OC it worked out to be a process or elimination, Nick Caley was desired by he chose to stay with the Rams.
Not sure Jerrod Mayo will be gone after this year that would be a personal blow to the Kraft Family, not sure they will take that hit.
Blaming Mayo is the current name of the game, but would it be different is Wolf did a better job "shopping for the groceries"??
There is about $36 million in cap room this year and $136 million next., they won't spend it all but they can do a whole lot of shopping with that capital..

I think the OC from Green Bay, Adam Stenavich needs to be on the list. From his bio on the Packers website:
  • Promoted to offensive coordinator on Jan. 31, 2022. Originally joined the Packers on Jan. 24, 2019, as offensive line coach and was promoted to offensive line/run game coordinator on March 1, 2021.
  • Since joining Green Bay's staff in 2019, has helped the Packers rank No. 1 in the NFL over that span in giveaways (77), No. 2 in time of possession (31:32), No. 3 in sacks allowed (152) and No. 7 in scoring (25.2 ppg).
  • Helped guide the Packers to their fourth playoff berth in five seasons in 2023, a Green Bay team with an average weighted age of 25.58 years, the fourth-youngest team to make the postseason since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger and the youngest since the 1974 Buffalo Bills (25.56).
  • Despite being without five-time All-Pro T David Bakhtiari (knee) for all but one game in 2021, tutored a line that helped Green Bay rank in the top 10 in the league in passing offense (No. 8, 253.8 ypg), total offense (No. 10, 365.6 ypg), scoring (No. 10, 26,5 ppg), giveaways (t-No. 1, 13) and time of possession (No. 1, 32:43).
  • In 2020, coached a line that helped the offense rank No. 1 in the NFL in scoring (31.8 ppg), giveaways (team-record 11) and time of possession (32:29), tied for No. 2 in sacks allowed (21) and No. 3 in yards per play (6.29).
  • Helped Bakhtiari and C Corey Linsley earn first-team All-Pro honors from The Associated Press in 2020, while Bakhtiari and G/T Elgton Jenkins were selected to the Pro Bowl that season.
  • Spent two seasons (2017-18) as the assistant offensive line coach for the San Francisco 49ers, helping coach a line that cleared the way for second-year RB Matt Breida to average 5.32 yards per carry in 2018 (No. 4 in the NFL), good for No. 3 in team single-season history (min. 150 att.)
We know that Wolf loves all things cheesehead. (cheese heady?) I think we are overlooking this guy as a possible hire.

agreed. He does deserve a look. Got to like his work with the dude the have up there whose name is escaping me at the moment

if we think Maye is the guy, I want an offensive head coach. I want a system that isn't going to leave after 1 or 2 good years to be a head coach someplace else.

One name: Bill Belichick

Interesting. And he was the 49ers oline coach for two years from 2017-2018 under Kyle Shanahan so he’ll know their system. And he wasn’t fired, he left to work with his friend Matt LeFleur when he got the Green Bay job. And LeFleur himself worked under Shanahan as QB coach in Atlanta when Shanahan was OC, before leaving to become OC in LA under McVay. This guy definitely fits in with that style of offense that Wolf wanted (and frankly Belichick too back in 2022). The one thing is that Stenavich and Wolf never overlapped in Green Bay.

yeah, I think he's certainly earned interviews at this point. Not saying he's the right guy, but he might be a good fit for someone.

Ben Johnson, Detroit
Adam Stenavich, Green Bay
Kingsbury, Washington

Those are my 3 for now. Stevanich is a new one, but you have to like how Love became an MVP candidate last year, and how they kept on rolling with Malik Willis filling in this year.
