Pre-Free Agency 2023

They’re not big reaches at 14 though. That’s right where some of the draft gurus have guys like Addison and Johnston. The free agent crop of wide receivers this year is terrible and the position has never been more important. Haven’t we seen that this meme was shown to not hold up

Not disagreeing, but... The Bungles' OL still kinda sucks, even without the injuries, and Burrow's still getting hit too much.

They managed to make it to “a little below average” pre-injury IMO. Which is probably good enough if you have a cerebral QB, good receivers and a good stable of backs.

I still think we sign Payne and Edmunds and draft a corner at #14 - we do not need Jon Jones if the Pats believe in Jack and Marcus Jones in Y2. Then the defense is all set (beast mode actually) unless we want to sign a FS in Round 4. There are 4 other draft picks, Round 2, 3 and two picks in 4. So go OT, WR, WR and Center. The WR pool is deep so a 3rd and 4th at WR will be good. We would have McCourty and Andrews' replacement, and the only thing we give up is two new WRs instead of Myers. We can release Trent Brown, use his $12M in cap space and add $5M more and sign McGlenchey. McGlenchey plus a 2nd rounder should start at LT and RT. Hines and Russey are in Y2 so they will help on the inside with the new center. Don't forget this plan eliminates James Ferentz and Myles of Space Bryant - everyone has to love that.
The defense could use a physical press man corner (ramsey) . As good as we were in 2022 we still struggled against elite WR'S.. that's probably the only weakness.. Jon Jones is a slot DB he played on the outside due to necessity last season.. Mills being in and out.. due to injury.. I still think he's useful here.. thing is he's 30 + , A 2 yr deal he'll probably get.. Jack Jones has everything you like in a young corner however we still need that #1 guy at corner like we need on offense..

Slot WR , 3rd down back , lock down corner are all the staples of a patriots teams make up.

We aren't far off, just a few pieces away from being back in contention again

Commanders have more than 30 million in cap space . What makes you think they will allow Payne to get away .

I read that they have a lot of FAs next year and they can not sign everyone. Also have to assume they will be paying a QB so the cap space evaporates.

Agreed. WR, #1 CB, 3rd down back, and OL. Like always I would like a DT and fast LB.

Look at the draft, there are a bunch of tall corners. Clearly one will be around at #14.
Only thing is judging by the most recent draft bust at corner.. most notably joeuan Williams.. seems getting an undrafted guy BB seems to be better at..

Yes! To your point definitely Another DT, can never have to many of those guys, such a very tough position to play those guys are always hurt it seems.. and definitely LB depth we don't have awful LBs but... I thought for sure we'd be in on the roaquan smith trade.. BB probably knew he'd command a big pay day in wich he rightfully deserved..

I'm definitely open to taking a tall corner in the draft, the track record of drafting CBs hasn't been good.. at some point we have to strike gold.. what a shame that Williams has been a bust.. he's basically the same body type as guys like sauce and j. Ramsey.. guess it's all between the ears...

Obrein will unlock Smith.
Look for him to get 1000 yds and double digit TDs.
He definitely wasn't used properly last season for sure.. I can see a resurgence for him.. what a boost would that be for Mac and the offense if so. Imagine having 2 threats at TE , a dam good RB in rham and some threats on the outside with Thornton.. that for sure will make DC have to game plan most definitely..

So, your position is that the 2022 draftees are busts?

My position is that as I stated the track record on drafting CBs like WRs has not been good.. we seem to do better when actually have undrafted guys.. now Jack and Marcus have seemed to change that trend.. however I said nothing about the 2022 draftees I'm speaking of past drafts most notably 2019 with Williams ..

There are a lot of tall strong CBs this year for some reason. Not sure why. Porter and Gonzalez are big. There are a few more. Even Witherspoon who is slight is over 6 feet.

Cam Smith, Deonte Banks, Eli Ricks, Emmanuel Forbes, that's 7 guys right there. Several are 6'2'. A couple of them are 210+
On another note good to see Revis is getting in the HOF.. the guy was absolutely awesome.. he had ty laws frame and physicality, champ Baileys vision glad we had him for that 2014 season..

Bob's a OC or magician??

I'm waiting for it.

It would be literally impossible for our track record to be as bad as WR. Yes, we had some misses and certainly some busts in there, but Pats either drafted or developed (undrafteed) all these players...

Asante Samuel, Ty Law (before BB), Logan Ryan, Jack Jones, Marcus Jones, Devin McCourty (drafted as CB), Malcom Butler, Jackson, Darius Butler (Actually had a decent career in NFL)...

They've also drafted a number of pretty decent Safeties.

"Hall of shame" for highly drafted CBs.
- JoeJuan Williams
- Duke Dawson
- Cyrus Jones
- Ras-I-Dowling

I agree that it hasn't been a position of strength - but I'd take our chances at CB over WR where we have just been dreadful.

I think this is the year we drop that WR Stigma if they Pats really do their homework they can't miss. A lot of really good WR prospects available this year that can be had in the Third and Fourth Rounds. I think some WR's are going to slip and turnout just as good or better than people taken before them.

Yes, spot on!! McCourty was headed down the draft bust highway year 2 , however he was moved to safety and ended up being a great safety for us.

Yes, the corners we did draft that busted out were actually asked to play man.. however they just were man corners.. Cyrus Jones and Dawson were complete head scratching picks..

Assante was a good zone corner, he actually played well when he left NE before his career flamed out. But yes WR is just so bad... I wouldn't be opposed to us drafting a CB.. we need to strengthen that area for sure..
