It was important to have three fatties to plug the middle. After losing Hicks and Siliga, we need to add a top run stuffer if possible. Belichick went after Fairly and Knighton. The key for me is not how much we paid or which of the three we signed. I suspect that any would be within a million or so of each other on a one year deal.

I key thing for me is that we now have a top set of run-stuffers: Brown, Branch and Knighton. And yes, Brown can be much more than that.

As of now, we also have Easley and Chris Jones. Obviously, we hope that we can upgrade Jones with a draft choice. After all, Branch and Knighton are on one-year contracts.

While what you say is true, all 3 can from time to time collapse the pocket on occasion. I have high hopes for Brown doing that more in 2016.

He was motivated enough to lose a lot of weight during the off-season.
He's now on a 1 year prove-it-to-the-league deal.
[Probably] has a lot tied up in incentives.
Appears he's hungry [duh] and has something to prove.

I like the potential. A lot.

Should have a top 5 run defense assuming everyone's healthy. I hope they address the OL and wr situation in the draft although not in love with the wrs in this year's draft.

Knowing BB he might draft another safety in the second round. Maybe they draft a LB

I think this team is going to get after the passer like crazy. Given the fact that pass defense in the secondary is essentially against the rules, that appears to be the only way to defend against the pass now.

Belichick has had one of the best offseason he's had in his entire tenure with New England.

I think it's safe to say he's "all in" this year, especially with all the one-year deals with prominent players.

I honestly was not expecting much out of the FA period. Color me both surprised and impressed. The thin margin by which this team missed a trip to SB 50 (which they surely would have won against a listless Panthers team) left a sting that has now been healed. We're on to Week 1.

Man if Easley and Brown develop into real good players. This line is going to wreck havoc. Easley look pretty good last year, would be nice to see him take down the QB a few times.

I caught up with Bill Belichick and asked him what he thought about Terrance "Pot roast" Knighton. "Good, smart, instinctive player, does a lot of things well."
I think you pulled an ESPN and are pretending his comments from a few years ago just happened.

I said they were against the cap. I did NOT say that that we really couldn't make any moves. Money will have to be found. As you indicated last week, we have time to do that. Miguel has listed many choices.

All in fun, mg, all in fun

Love the signing. The team needs as many big bodies on the line as possible to make it thru the season. Let's hope he has a pro-bowl year left in him.

I feel the way i did 24 hours ago. I like the player and feel it helps but does not make or break the team. Hopefully he is on a mission this year but even if he does not have his best year you know he will be a solid legit starting level DT.

The Pats really have filled up a lot of needs. DT was their #1 or #2 need going into the draft. Now you don't need to do anything there to be totally honest. They can punt on DT and i will not feel worried in the least.

You have to draft them when they are available though, kind of like when the Pats drafted Garappolo, knowing the next year was weak at QB.

We can always use a good DT, and if that is the strength of the draft then the Pats should grab one when the supply is there, even if the demand is not.

Especially this year with our 1st round pick stolen.

Oh of course. Good DTs (and particularly DTs that can creative havoc against the passer) are always welcome and always on top of my list of players you look to draft. If a good one is there by all means take them. I am simply saying they don't need to take one if there is no one they love. They don't need another body that seems to be just okay.

I wonder if belichick has an eye on the schedule with this signing... Playing alot of teams that like to run so tried to "beef up" the run D? Similar to facing a bunch of good qbs in '14 and getting browner and revis. I know Seattle, Denver, NYJ (2x), Buffalo (2x), SF, Houston have been either run first or at the very least "balanced" teams. Not many 35-40 pass attempt teams on schedule next season....

like in 2014 he's looking way up the schedule ... its mostly about AFCCG
obviously he still respects Denver (at least more than most), Chiefs
even Pittsburgh might run more this year (bell back, bryant&miller out, R hurt)

but i dont see it only as stopping the run
its about creating new options & keeping everybody off guard
(3-4 options etc.; i also like the idea of easley coming for jones at times)

thats whats really fun for me - he can turn the team inside out every year
with mostly the same personnel (hence versatility) just adding key pieces
to effectively complete the make-over
(and the big picture - like trading jones - reveals itself only at the end)

its a key to this crazy success run in the most restricted environment in sports created to prevent it

thanks BB for the master chess aspect of it
