Possible Developmental Player 52 and/or 53

Polk has quite a Dead Cap hit VS what he would cost to keep on the roster.

If he's cut IMO it's the end. No PS. He would be done here.

Some team will give him another shot. At minimum Polk needs a change of scenery.
Didn’t he really get a change of scenery though with a fresh start with a brand new staff?
I don’t think the money matters because it’s a sunk cost. If he doesn’t earn a spot it’s better to not have him at same cost as have him at the same cost.

That said there’s been way too much Polk talk do far. He’s injured. Unless he’s faking it, let him get on the field and earn or not earn a job.

No one disliked him last year more than I, but virtually everyone who put a draft grade in him said he has NFL talent. Too early to give up on him, but he has a tough path to make this team, and an even tougher one to get in the field.
If he’s cut someone will take a chance, and probably after he clears waivers so he comes at the minimum.

Having hands like mine does not signify NFL talent.

Gibbens is going to play A LOT at LB. And special teams as well
He is a 3 year vet who has averaged about 40 defensive snaps and 16 ST snaps per game. He has 95 tackles in 14 games and 650 snaps in 2023.
He is not a developmental guy who will never be active, he is a key, and I expect him to be a starting Lb if he is 100% healthy.

I dint think we ever keep a guy on the 53 with the expectation to never play (other than at QB). There are too many injuries to expect you can get through a season with 51 guys.
I strongly disagree.

I'm sure that either of us could go back and find a player or two who were kept with no expectation of them ever being active.

I can’t. If you disagree feel free to go ahead and name them.

You can’t mean you disagree about Gibben though, right?

I do expect Gibbens to make the team and be a solid backup.

But you listed him as a guy who would never be active.

Who do you think starts ahead of him at LB?

I listed players that some posters might consider Player 52 or Player 53. Would you prefer a poll?
===============
SOME might indeed consider Gibben to NOT be a lock
White
Spillane
Ellis
Tavai
Landry
Jennings
Chaisson
Swinson
Gibbens
Mapu
Rice

How could he not be considered a lock?
White, Landry, Jennings, Chaisson, Swinson are edge players not off the ball Lbs. Mapu is probably a safety.

You should learn about Gibben, you’ll like him.

Nonetheless your post wasn’t about players some might consider player 52 or 53 it was about candidates for a 52 or 53 spot that are never expected to be active.

Gibben is much better than Ellis.
Gibben is on a 1 year $1.3m contract, Ellis 2 year $13.5, 7.75 guaranteed. Not sure the Pats agree with you.

Given is coming off an injury, Ellis was a matched offer.

I'm aware. Pretty big offer to match if they didn't think he would play significant snaps on D.

They had the cap space, and it’s not ridiculous for a backup and special teams starter, but yeah probably a dumb move.
If he plays like he did last year he won’t be on the field much on defense.

Or Gibben’s agent got the prove-it deal for an under performing vet while Ellis’ agent went for the get some security for the up and coming youngster deal…

The whole front 7 was terrible last year, the Line couldn't stop the run or generate pressure. Doesn't make the LBs job very easy. I can only assume Vrabs and staff think he will fit in the new D, and with much better play in front of him. I don't care which LBs play the most, so long as the overall play is up to a much higher standard.

Again we are on to this players playing bad football being excused because they had teammates playing badly.
If you watch Ellis play LB he makes bad reads, doesn’t fill correctly, gets taken out of position and seems lost in pass defense.
Those are his issues not his teammates.

He’s young hopefully he gets better, but if he is what he was last year he won’t see a lot of snaps.

And again you think one player should not be impacted by bad play all around him. One "certainty" is Vrab and staff are more qualified to make player assessments than you or I. They thought he was good enough to match a $13.5M offer.

We'll give Ellis a chance , he's pretty good .
We'll see

c'com. The player and coach think that they are paying $1.3M for a sure starter.
=============
Are we keeping three or four ILB's?
Is Tavai gone? Why? Do we really think that Vrabel doesn't like veteran help.
Is Mapu gone? He is NOT making the 53 as a safety.
