He can learn in practice as well as play. The fact is, T, that not many NFL players CAN consistently and successfully throw into tight windows. We got to see one of those guys for 20 years. But it takes a LOT of experience and confidence to do it, and THAT takes time. Time and knowledge to be able to know WHEN to take that risk. Knowledge of where the defense is when you release that pass, and the accuracy and being familiar with your receiving corps.
Brady had a full YEAR+ on the bench and the time to become familiar with the offense and his receivers, but it took him another 4 or 5 years after that, before he could comfortably say he "knew all the answers to the test". You cannot ask a raw rookie QB to throw into "tight windows" when his FIRST responsibility is "do not turn the ball over". That is the meme he will hear from his coaches and teammates for this year AT LEAST.
We ALL knew that Maye was a work in progress when we made that pick. But we were all thrilled about it, because we could see the arm, accuracy, and athleticism that was only confirmed during preseason games when he would flash in a play that made you think, "we really got something here"; You cannot compare him to Nix, McDaniels and Williams for a lot of reasons, but mostly because these guys have 2-3 more years of being in college and experience. But we all see that when Drake is 24 he will have surpassed them all, assuming he is as hard a worker as he seems to be and has the drive and competitiveness to CONSTANTLY work to improve himself year to year.
The best way to do that, T, is to let him sit and get those practice and scout team reps, until he is ready to at least survive and compete when his turn comes.
Maye in 3 months will be better than Maye today.
Maye, playing in games and taking all the first team snaps will be better in 3 months than Maye sitting on the sidelines and running the scout team.
To me the number 1 goal is him progressing as fast as he can, but waiting until he progresses to certain point before playing him which slows down the progress.
