Peter King: Why NFL Should Give Back Picks to Pats (But Won’t)

During a recent service trip I got into a conversation explaining the science behind deflation etc....

In the middle of the conversation it dawned on me that I really don't give a **** if this yahoo believes me or not. hahahaha

I know and I think everyone should now know that 2 psi, 20 psi, 0.0002 psi is not going to turn a Sanchez into a Brady.

It still amazes me though how the NFL was able to turn 0.2 psi into the story of the century.

"They cheated. The PSI tests proved that."

"Well, the PSI tests 'proved' that the Colts cheated, too, then, since 3 of 4 Colts' footballs tested came in below the minimum when tested with the lower reading gauge."

I'm missing something. Everything you stated above the NFL did.

Thats the key strategic error by Goody. If Goody left TB12 alone this thing would have been over.

Yes...they did those things but took them a step further. By using the "more probable than not" proof of violation, they went beyond inconclusive evidence and claimed they were able to conclude guilt. They did not punish the Patriots for merely breaking procedure with the footballs (could be penalized in itself) but rather concluded that they deflated the balls (a much greater burden of proof.) And he went beyond just throwing out suspicion about Brady, which leads to your last point, that rather than just leaving it at "draw your own conclusions...we can't prove it, but Brady looks bad" they have gone way, way beyond that, first declaring he was guilty of having knowledge and then progressively making his involvement appear worse at every hearing.

So, in other words, Goodell could have won this war easily by appearing to be careful of misapplying justice and by appearing to use a reasonable standard of proof. He could have pulled the wool over everyone's eyes and still gotten his way, but he wanted everyone to see his knockout punch to Brady.

Not sure I follow. Seems that there are plenty of logical arguments to be made on that point. They wouldn't do any good, but the arguments are there.
There was no logical arguments for imposing the fine and taking the draft picks in the first place therefore no logical reason to return them. There is no logic in this matter.

I think if any Patriots fans walk past Sh*tdell, they should play the knockout game with him until we get our picks back!

I once had to deal with a situation where someone who was experiencing dementia had a paranoid nonsensical belief and was very upset. I spoke with a geriatric doctor about it and he explained the paranoid belief was not a result of logic, therefore logic could not help the situation. That goes to show that the Patriots success has caused other NFL owners, the commissioner, and many non Patriots football fans to lose their minds.

Gotcha. I agree completely.

They never will..so not sure why we are still talking about this....i'll date selena gomez before this happens

I mentioned in a thread recently that you can state actual facts that clear the Pats of this but most are so ignornant that they read/hear the first thing presented to them and it's presented as facts to them, ie-"it's the Pats, there guilty!!!"

That being said, f King, he used to be a good read but he's in the top 5 as league stoogies. I got a coffee nerdness brew for you King, it's in the litter box my cat's use...

When can we expect the appeals court to rule?

Like any other court, at their leisure.

About 60 days is industry standard in NY courts. In Federal Court, it's usually much quicker.

I know fans of other teams....they don't care about the facts....they're glad the pats are being knocked down a peg

You can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into.

This is absolutely true. That's why no one cares about things like how the Falcons got caught pumping in crowd noise (and admitted they were doing it) or the Browns got caught engaging in illegal communications.

It isn't about justice or punishing cheaters, if it was then we would have heard as much about the Falcons. It's about taking down the Patriots. And why do so many others want to take down the Patriots? Pure, unadulterated jealousy.

It's even more ridiculous than that. The "Deflator" comments came in the offseason, BEFORE the Jets game. So think of the timeline from the point of view of "Deflator" supposedly meaning what the league claims it means:

Deflator makes comment in offseason.
Despite already having a "deflator", the balls in the Jets game were at 16 PSI.

Agree 100%. This is the correct answer to everyone who says "but but but he called himself THE DEFLATOR!!!1!1!"

If he was the Deflator because of an illegal scheme, he was really bad at it, as the Jets game showed.

He sent that text before the word DeflateGate was ever spoken. The text stands out because it is the same word as the 'scandal'. So the uninformed can't imagine any other reason why he would call himself that. But if you had heard that nickname in December or some other time, you could come up with a dozen reasons he'd call himself that, weight loss included.

I think this was driven by a handful of owners from day one...beginning in Indy and Baltimore and quickly spreading across the League. I'm not defending or excusing Goodell by any means or in any way as he seems to enjoy sticking it to the Patriots, but this was driven by the vindictiveness of the owners and implemented by their hired hand.

I think they started with the "story" and worked back to the 0.23 psi.
