Per 98.5: Pats won't renew Brandon Lloyd's deal

A) Lloyd won't be gone until Welker is signed.

B) Belichick may even be able to wait until a week into free agency to make his "official" decision on Lloyd. He can negotiate/sign other players first. I presume that the option date is by the end of March.

C) If Welker and Lloyd both stay, I think that we are unlikely to spend an real money on a free agent to stretch the field. Belichick has his limits for much he'll spend on the wide receiver position.

D) We all expect the patriots to draft a wide receiver or two.

E) Is Lloyd really worth $5M of new money to play this year? Cant't we do better for perhaps a bit more? The dead cap money is irrelevant.
BB does not operate like A and B. His decisions are made completly independent of each other regardless of the results.

For example, Sanders was cut for salary cap reasons even though Meriweather had been cut. This left a void at safety for which there
were no options in place.

When Givens left, Branch could have been retained by tearing up the last year of his rookie contract like other teams offered to do. Branch's
departure left the Patriots without their #1 and #2 receivers and no
replacements in sight.

Lloyd will be cut shortly no matter what happens to Welker. Before free
agency, Welker will be presented with a last, best offer well below market value and will be told to take it or leave it. BB will not care one iota that
Slater will be only experienced WR.

why is no one talking about Alexander as a replacement for Lloyd?

Danario Alexander, San Diego Chargers
Unrestricted, (4th season), 24, 6-5, 217
Labeled a bust early on in his days in St. Louis, Alexander broke out last year with the Chargers. He averaged 17.8 yards per catch and hauled in seven touchdowns in just 10 games. The Ravens got a taste of the big-bodied, young wideout when he caught five passes for 74 yards against them last season. Alexander is a playmaker in the deep passing game.

Apologies if this has already been covered but this kid practically screams for attention from the Welker/Lloyd University focus group here at Patsfans...

Pretty sure he's restricted, as he's only had three seasons. Even then, he's got worse knees than me, and that's saying a lot. He's had five surgeries on the left knee since his sophomore year of college.

I need no further examples of one of the worst personnel by Belichick, ever (the cutting of James Sanders).

Sanders was Cut before Merriweather.

I'd love to take a flyer on DHB if the team sees some hope on working on his hands. Elite speed.

Sign Hartline
resign Welker
resign edelmen
draft Patton/Wheaton/Rogers
Sign Nelson and a couple more lower level free agents

yeah..i don't like those WRs at all. All short...not much speed. Next

For what it's worth, here's Reiss's take on it, from today's weekly chat.

Mike Reiss said:
Dave, the idea of Lloyd not having his option bonus picked up isn't new. This was discussed when the season ended. I think what's unfortunate is that the picture being painted is that Lloyd's bonus might not be picked up because of behind-the-scenes/locker room issues. I look at the situation differently. I think it's more economics relative to production. If Lloyd was set to make the veteran minimum for a salary, I don't think we're having this discussion. Lloyd is wired a bit differently, but I don't think it's anything we haven't seen in that locker room in past years. It's about football to me, not personality.

until i see the pats draf a WR that isn't a JAG..i will keep my stance. Don't draft a WR

Seems pretty nonsensical if you ask me. How do you plan to see the Patriots draft a non-JAG WR if you don't want them to draft a WR, period.

Have you see the WRs they have drafted over the years? busts. No thanks. Stick to FA where they are good at
