Peppers confirms release was scheme related:

IF Peppers lost a Step: Kyle Dugger lost five. Chalk it up to nobody is perfect Vrabel.
Duggar was dealing with a serious and misdiagnosed leg injury that he appears to now be mostly recovered from.
While playing at 85% speed, the genius defensive staff we had last year had him covering WRs man to man.

Vrabel says it wasn’t scheme fit, and most are interpreting Peppers tweet to mean the same think. Vrabel thinks he has better players.
If they both are saying it was scheme and most think he was still better than Dugger then that kind of only leaves one thing $$$$. They couldn't save it on Dugger so they axe Pepper and save a little while retaining a similar player even if he's slightly worse.

Not saying it's the wrong move just stinks to be in a place where small savings means more than small increments in talent.

Maye needs to really go off so we can stop thinking about the future and get back to now now now.

Vrabel decided that his free safeties are Woodson and Hawkins.

Vrabel decided that his strong safety is Dugger, with occasional help from Mapu.

Vrabel decided that his #4 utility/ST safety is Pettus (and also STer Schooler).

There is no further room at the inn. In the end, Vrabel likes what he has seen from Woodson and Hawkins.

I expect this group will give us better safety play than we had last year.

No one knows the dollar effects.

1) The dollar effect would depend on how much other teams would pay Peppers or Dugger. I would think that Dugger would have been paid more.

2) You say that most here believe that Peppers is a better player and would contribute more. Perhaps that's true. I don't believe the Peppers would have contributed as much Dugger will. Dugger is very solid strong safety and think better than Peppers.

3) Finally, we've seen lots of Vrabel transactions, especially regard veterans. How large effect has a few dollars on a contract meant? Vrabel is building the best team he can for 2025, for 2026 and 2027. I don't think that Vrabel has been focused on saving a few million Rather he is focused on who will be best for the team. In the end, that player was Gregory. Oops, that player was Peppers.

Like most of these stories, we will never know the WHOLE tale. But it is somewhat comforting to know that he was released due things they found lacking in his game rather than something negative in the locker room or his character.

I have to say if he slipped, it happened this year because before his incident he was playing very well. BTW- I never believed that "it's a scheme thing" By the time a guy has been in the league more than 6 or 7 years (9 in Peppers) he should be at least "familiar" with most systems, concepts, and languages.

I loved the player he WAS, if he wasn't still that player then they did the right thing in moving on from him.
