Pettus has graded out very well in his limited appearances.
All came down to scheme/coverage and health.
the staff had better options with Woodson, Hawkins and Pettus in this scheme
I don't think money had anything to do with it, as the Pats ate much of what was owed anyways

fair enough

I'm 100% fine with the team moving on if they think Pettus is a reasonable backup. It didn't seem that was the case when Sauders was signed.

why?
Pettus has played 45 defensive snaps, Saunders 0
Pettus has played in 75% of the ST snaps, Saunders 0

Silly me. I presumed that the signing of Saunders wasn't a total waste of time and indicated that there was some need at safety. I am happy to see that Vrabel was simply wasting a roster spot for a few weeks.

I think they felt there is not much of a developmental scope with peppers and dugger and both will be off next season.

So to build continuity at a reduced cost they are going with the rookies and vet minimum free agents so that they can get 80% output at 10% cost and in the process also get them the reps.

I don't think Vrabel anticipated is to go so far . If we were losing bad , we might not have traded I think. But with the way things are looking Vrabel and team probably planned for future.

Pettus, Saunders and even Hawkins are solid rotational safeties. None of them are leading this team in solo tackles every season the way Dugger did...

Saunders is a solid Sub-JAG, lucky to have a spot on a practice squad, nothing more. And Pettus ain't no great shakes either.

We still have the Worst backup DBs in the Entire league.

I tend to agree.

Woods, Austin, and Pettus are not who you want as your first players off the bench.
=========
The idea is that your NFL qualify backup DB's should always have a role on ST's, with their primary skilling being as a defensive back. We have Ster's who are emergency backups.
===========
You and I have agreed on this point at least since early in 2024, although I appreciate the value of these players as STer's much more than you do.

My bottom line is that we have plenty of room on the roster for two additional or upgrades, one at CB and one at S. I truly don't know why we choose to have this deficiency on the roster. Are Mapu and Murphy really that valuable to the team?

I am not saying that Pettus s/b the teams 1st option as their back up S.
However, last year he did play 340 defensive snaps (31%) and 230 ST snaps (53%)
I am saying that this years scheme wants a S that can cover, and be a good tackler, and they are comfortable with Pettus seeing those snaps rather than Dugger or Peppers. with Spillane, Gibbons, Ellis, Tavai and Mapu, their LB's are in the box making plays east to west rather than their S's.
their S's are no longer going to lead the team in tackles with Spillane on the team

That's probably why he was released

Daniels reported it on Monday. I must have missed it.

I saw it and @DaBruinz had it in the transaction thread but it didn't make it on here. When I saw it being discussed in the Dugger thread, it made sense to branch off of that into its own, which lets others know of the move and then allows for people to continue discussing him here.

Well, the team has chosen Pettus.

Who do you think the team should have as its backup S? not Dugger? not Peppers? not Pettus? Then who?
