Pats Trade Pick 28!!!

Would it make people happier if I told them now we have more money to sign Randy Moss or other free agents?

First round players come with a price tag. Obviously, Belioli didn't think that any of the remaining players justified that price tag. They weren't going to use that pick and get poor value, so they took what they could in a trade.

It doesn't make sense not getting even a third rounder this year. In 29 years of following the draft I don't recall a trade like this.I'm sure there was but not by this team.

wft are you talking about?

Fire Belichick! Fire Pioli! Hire "reflexblue!"

Didn't the trade that we made with Baltimore so they could get Kyle Boller work out like this?? We got a first and another pick. Does anyone know what it was?

In that one, we only traded down to the 2nd.

Trading from the 1st to the 4th is very rare, even with a 1st rounder the next year involved.

THATS RIGHT! But seriously though folks going threw a beolie draft makes me want to scratch my head at times I know in the end it usually works out. BB is Great coach, with a great staff but no-body's perfect. I can think of a number 0f moves and draft picks than never worked out

No, SFs third rounder would have been fine. Let's not over react here.

We are now all fans of the great, wondrous, stupendous Buzzsaw that is the Arizona Cardinals. Oh, and we get to root for the Seahawks this year, too? It's mayhem! Chaos, I tells ya!

Thanks RC I needed that I take this day to seriously sometimes.

HELLO MCFLY! HELLO?

What is NOT to like about this trade people?
1) Unless San Fran advances to the NFC Championship game (very doubtful) - then our pick next year will certainly be higher than this years @28.
2) The draft next year should be deeper (debatable)- but what is sure is nearly everyone said there was NOT 1st round talent after the first 10-20 players this year. Why pay for one?
3) How is San Frans schedule easy? Yes, I get that they play in an 'easier' conference - but they are not a heavyweight team themselves. SEA is no pushover and ARI is also up & coming as is SF. You could choose at least 10 teams worse than the RAMS.
4) Some of the notable Away games for SF: @Pitt , @ NY Giants, @ ATL, @ Carolina, @Cleveland. Not only are those ok to decent teams - but those are five teams in the Eastern Time Zone = long flights and jet lag. Would you like the Pats to have FIVE away games on the West Coast (the lack of possibility is besides the point).
5) Some notable home opponents: Baltimore, New Orleans, Cinncinnati, Seattle.

Folks, I understand that San Fran is improving (hard not to) but HOW IS THIS AN EASY SCHEDULE? Why is there not a decent chance that we could move up 5-6 spots (if they make the playoffs) or possibly up 10-14 spots?? Plus we get a high 4th rounder this year. What is not FAIR about this for NE?

P.S. If the above didn't convince you read this....

CZAR'S FRONT OFFICE TAKE: As I predicted, the Patriots traded out of this spot, making a great trade with San Francisco. There was no defensive player here that Bill Belichick wanted and the 49ers used the pick on Staley, who was rated as a top 20 player by most teams. Staley is considered a solid left tackle prospect and he will be given the starting spot. The Patriots stole the 49ers blind on this trade, getting the 110th overall pick this year AND San Francisco's first-round pick next year. I know that Mike Nolan believes his team will be much improved this coming season, but the odds are pretty good that San Francisco's first-round pick next season will be in the top 15 of the draft. If that happens, the Patriots are in great shape for 2008. You can bet they will be rooting against Nolan's team

I don't get why some people are all bent out of shape. It's very simple: 28 pick this year potentially turned into a top 15 or, with a little luck, top 10 pick next year. No player on the board, at that time, was worth rejecting that deal. And the Pats got a little extra insurance in a 4th rounder this year, too. What's not to like?

With Harris and Posluszny on the board, trading out of 28 speaks volumes about the Pats' opinion on those LBs. So what's the plan? They still need LB depth, and will probably go there in the 3rd or 4th. Maybe DeOssie or Abbate? The guy I like is Stephen Nicholas from South Florida.

Right again Mr. BW.......the only people *****ing about this trade are a couple on this board who think they know more then
Belichick and SP.

Cousins I think we make one more move today. I think we move back up to two or high three again.

I feel Bradley might be their guy if Harris is gone, which he should be.Bradley should be available.

Now Does this open the door for ILB Ed Hartwell?
This might make sense.

If we all recall, this 2007 draft was junk. Anyone drafted over 19 was probably a second or third rounder or worse all the way to 99 in this draft.

A third would have been nice but we had to have the dancing partner. The partner said no to a three, that's all. We got what we got and if the Niners finish 23rd with a superb season, that still equates to about a #20 for a #28. I don't think they will do as high as 23rd next year. Belichick just offered on the NFL show that the SF deal was the best offer for #28 if they did not take the pick themselves.

If we had taken Harris at #28 it was fifteen to twenty spots too high. I do not know if we get him yet. Our competition from the Jets and Carolina didn't move for him though either.

I think the Pats go vet help with ILB Hartwell, RB Chris Brown and R.Moss with the lower fourth(why not?). I think with #110 to package that with #91 and move up.

Lets face it cousins, we knew the Pats were gonna dump either the #24 or #28. I was hoping for Cleveland and a second or third so they could get Quinn, but with this draft, I think BB/SP knew what they were doing. Lets step back at look at this. Focus on this being a weak draft.

Merriweather was a need cousins, not BPA, so that myth is exposed. Now the 2008 draft is another thing. That trade was for BDA "Best Draft Available".

Now with one less first rounder, now second rounder, perhaps the CAP is easier to work with Assante?

Miguel would this be true?

THAS RIGHT! Seriously though folks going threw a beolie draft makes me want to scratch my head at times I know in the end it usually works out.
BB IS A great coach with a great staff but he's not perferct no-body is. I can name at least a dozen draft picks that never panned out.

I'm not loving the trade. IMO, the only way we come out on top is if SF pick is aroun 10-12 next year. Otherwise, its a wash.

NE could have picked someone to help them THIS YEAR with #28. Say what you want about this being a "weak" draft class, are you telling me you don't trust NE enough to find a guy at 28, given their history of first round picks, who wouldn't make an impact on a 2007 SB run?

I'm all for forward thinking, but when your team is as loaded as this, I think NE owed it to itself to take two first round players to contribute in 2007.

Not getting any acceptable 2007 compensation really rubs me the wrong way. Would have liked to at a minimum get SF's #3 this year.

Oh well. Hopefully SF stinks,.

Funny those thinking that S.Fan will have a bad year next year are not taking into consideration that the Pats could have had a 1st rounder on the team learning the playbook for a year. Whats that worth?

Exactly. They seem to forget that Ardeshir Baker and Eric Alexander were starting last year's AFCC.

I'd much rather have drafted two D players to help us beat the Colts next year.

A 2008 draft pick is not going to be covering Anthony Gonzalez in the slot in next years playoffs.

Tombonneau - you seem rational - considering the trade from several angles. Also consider this - a # 28 player (still remaining on the board) - where do you see them significantly contributing in '07? We addressed our weakness in WR in FA, ditto LB with Thomas. No stud RB left with 1st round talent, ditto CB, safety. Seemed pretty much all that was left on the board would have been backups (this year) and adding depth (at LB or other). The value of a first round pick was not there (as many NFL coaches have said about this draft -even Bill himself). Why pay for one?

On the other hand, if you can move up in next years draft (very likely unless SF goes to the NFC championship) -even a fair to good chance to move up into the teens - why not take that 'gamble' including a 4th rounder added in as a bonus.

It is not about ONE year -(pick # 28 could have helped us THIS year '07 as most likely a backup as we are a SB contender). A first round pick is signed for minimum 5 YEARS. If there is a good chance you can get a better player in next years draft (possibly one drafted in the teens) for 5 YEARS (plus a 4th rounder).- why not do it?
