Pats trade for JC Jackson

Gonzalez, Jackson and the Jones trio potentially in 2024 could be pretty good,

Go put Gonzalez on an island, Jackson with safety help, and then 2 of the Jones in the Nickle and Dime
Correct if the Jones trio actually get on the field.

While I'm not at all confident that the dude isn't washed at this point (putting aside the potential legal issues as well), at the very least you shouldn't need a lot of time to get him up to speed on the defense. For a team that needs help at corner NOW, that's the "best" thing you can look for. Not holding my breath that he's a difference maker, but he should be better in man coverage than Wade or Bryant.
Better than Wade and Bryant is what we are looking for....

If we get that...and get Jon Jones back...we should be a-OK....

Why not. He sucks elsewhere but did good here. Can’t be worse than Myles Bryant.

Per Ian Rapoport:

This is huge if Jackson can come back healthy. He really thrived in the New England system so he's an exciting player to have return.

Didn't he suffer a big injury in his first year with the Chargers?

Also are we on the hook for the entirety of his contract though? I thought he signed a huge 80m dollar deal with them last season in free agency.

In any case, welcome back JC Jackson, I hope you play well because we're gonna need you!

His contract situation is discussed earlier in the thread.

I like it. The risk is minimal and he knows the defense. They have to try to put a bona fide corner on the field because Bryant and Wade ain’t it.

OK this is the contract information I was looking for.

So we're only on the hook for 2m of salary this year and we can cut JC Jackson if he doesn't work out without being on the hook for any guaranteed money. This makes me feel a lot better about this deal.

Jackson was very good in our system so I just hope he can return to form in his 2nd stint with the team. Maybe as some have suggested, Jackson will pull a Patrick Chung 2.0 with us.

It took 7 pages to get the full story but this is a GREAT move. There is no other way to look at it.

1. the cost of the transaction. We drop about 35 spots from the 6th to the 7th. To pick a player from a pool of long shots to begin with. We don't even lose a draft pick

2. His cost to us this year is LESS than $2MM and there are NO guarantees after this season.

3. Forget about what happened to him in SD and what happened in Buffalo. The real bottom line is that Jackson is a quality NFL starting CB. Was he overpaid by the Chargers? Sure he was. Was he playing up to to what he was paid? Not even close. But he is what he is. He can be a decent CB playing in OUR system and he is a proven turnover machine (with us).

4. Systems MATTER - players have often thrived or regressed based on the system they played in.

5. JC Jackson is officially damaged goods on the market. That is how he is currently viewed, no getting around it. This means he will have EVERY reason to play his best for the rest of the season to at least prove he is quality NFL starter if not an elite player. He knows that if he doesn't play well the Pats will simply drop him at the end of the season and he will be looking at minimum wage jobs or just above next season.

BOTTOM line, the cost was next to nothing. The upside his huge. The downside is almost nonexist. HOORAY

As for Gonzo, I regret most the thousand odd reps he isn't going to get on what might have been a ROY season. Those reps would have helped him improve his game next season and cannot be replaced. I just hope he stays with the team. Goes to all the CB meetings because while they won't make up for the ACTUAL reps, they will will still be valuable to his progression,

Rubbish.

Ty Law was fine after he left w NYJ
A$ante was fine after he left
Darius Butler became a very good slot DB
Gilly is near the end but fine after he left w CAR
Revis was fine in 05 w/ NYJ

Well, money. If they don't restructure his contract, he's going to be a financial burden.

pretty sure they can cut him loose at any time if they want right? Chargers already paid him his guaranteed money, so they'll be taking the huge dead money hit this year and next on him, where the Patriots are only on the hook year to year, game to game with him if i understand correctly

Has anyone watched him at all this year? I haven’t seen him , just wondering what he looks like health / movement wise ?

I believe he was hurt and then healthy scratch, he has not been much since he left. They are probably happy to be rid of him.

He could barely run against Miami and looked like he was jogging. Hill/Waddle were were blowing right past him and he got torched badly. The Chargers Doctors made the wrong call green lighting him last year to come back 4 weeks after ankle surgery. Mac Jones came back after 3 weeks of a sprained ankle. JC couldn't run then and is worse after the patellar tendon injury.

I was one of his biggest defenders here and absolutely deserved to get paid what he did. It's interesting how many posters on here don't even realize he had major injuries in LA and assume he was just terrible and suddenly forgot how to play football.

Yikes, that ankle sounds pretty effed

This is idiotic. He led the league in turnovers, passes defensed in a man to man defense with a mediocre pass rush since he arrived in 2018 and had the lowest QB when thrown his way in 2021.

yeah, I agree 100%
he was an all pro CB making UDFA money for a couple of years.
he earned a top 5 CB salary with his play while with NE
my only question is will he ever be back to 100% healthy?
worth the shot imo.
