Player Signing Pats Sign RB to PS

Vrabel claims the team "needs Rhamondre's talent." The Pats are (as I recall) the 27th best running team. How valuable, really, is the lead back on theleague's 27th best running team? On this matter, on the subject of Rhamondre generally, Vrabel is full of ****.
No need to cuss of course we need him. Otherwise all we have is a rookie and a practice squad player.

I feel they use the RB a lot for the screens and for pass blocking. He doesn't want Henderson to miss a assignment and get maye injured. Thats probably why rham is there, to protect maye. Not the best use of resources , but it is what it is.

Pretty sure we signed Corbin to the PS prior to the Martinez workout.
According to Ian's post, Corbin, Martinez, and Deon Jackson all had tryouts on 10/7. Corbin was signed after the try-out.

Well there u go.
I started this thread, then saw the Martinez workout much later, like maybe the next day.
Didn't pay enough attention to when Martinez worked out apparently.

No worries. It wasn't really broadcast about when the workout happened.
Ian actually posted about the workout on the 8th, but it occurred on the 7th.. Which is where some confusion might have come in.

Deon Jackson has speed, looks interesting but hasn’t done much in the NFL and got dinged up easily. The rest of these guys are okay, nothing special. But you’re not likely to find “special” out there on the waiver wire right now. Why not poach some practice squad instead?

If the line gives Martinez 4 yards, he'll get 4 yards.
If the line gives Martinez 40 yards, he'll get 4 yards.
He's that guy.
LOL. Is that the RB equivalent to Joe Milton. if you need him to throw 70 yards he will throw it 70 yards and if you need him to throw it 10 he will throw it 70.

One of my kids graduated from Miami so I follow them somewhat closely. Martinez had plenty of decent runs and a better than six yard average. I also live in Ohio and saw plenty of Henderson. With Henderson you will see some no gain carries, with Martinez not so much. I think they do compliment each other fairly well.
I think Martinez is a BenJarvus Green-Ellis. Not terrible but not great

Law firm wasn't great, but he was good enough for sport duty.
If Martinez was BJGE and you could pick him as a FA 5 games into the season on a min contract, you should/would do that all day long.

I think they can get that same production out of Jennings and Jennings has decent hands out of the backfield. I don't know about Martinez as a pass catcher. The new guy Corbin has kick return experience and can catch some. I do agree though that if Martinex could be BJGE level on the cheap then he should at least be PS material.

This is true of all these guys at the RB position. You don't have to be a great athlete, you just have to be able to pass block and catch the ball moderately well.

Cam Skattaboo isn't some amazing athlete, the Giant's offensive line is just the best it's been in years, they have a real passing threat now in Dart and Cam is big and good enough athletically. RB's are a dime a dozen... Jonas Gray was famous for a day, then faded away.

He is elite in his balance and he has a special build: strong, low center of gravity.

I mean just look at the highlights of his season last year at Arizona State. Personally carried that team. Should have been an early second round pick. Instead fourth round. Slow straight line speed. Can’t break free.

So what?

What I saw was a good OL in love with blocking for this guy. So much fun! They know he’s going to seek out contact and deliver a blow that’s special. Even by pro standards.

So it’s symbiotic. Is that a word?

There's nothing "elite" about him... I called Rhamondre "good" when he was drafted in the 4th round and so is Cam.

College highlights don't mean much in the NFL, the list of all SEC players and college superstars who stunk as pros is long. Most of his opponents are delivering packages for UPS or starting in real estate right now.

The Giants for the first time in a long time have a very good offensive line, now that Russ is pinned to the bench they have a QB who is a threat to throw downfield... that's the big difference.

Hell look what Saquon Barkley did last year running behind a great offensive line for the first time... he nearly doubled his career best rushing season from 6 years in NY. Look what Daniel Jones is doing in Indy now with the best offensive line he has played behind and good weapons and coaching... the best season of his career.

Football is a team sport... and nobody is more beholden to the offensive line than the RB and QB. Barkley and Daniel Jones didn't magically improve... their team improved.

Cam is a nice little player, a 4th round talent with a great opportunity... nothing more. A year or two from now when the weapon's crowd get distracted with the shiny new toys the draft has brought them... Cam will be relegated to the merely "good" pile. This is typical recency bias that we see year after year after year.

I have always liked what I’ve seen from Jennings. Was glad they kept him around in case he was needed. I think he will get limited opportunities but I think he will do fine. He runs hard.

This thread makes me recall a player who was criminally underrated (even by me) when he was here:

Brandon Bolden.

Dude was a core special teamer but always seemed to fill in at RB pretty damned well.

I agree. And Jennings is a very, very determined blocker (excellent if they kick to Henderson but more of an open question if the kick is the other way, as is more likely).

Signing Corbin is fine, but the world has moved on from when the Patriots lost almost all of their running backs in 2018 and had to sign players off the street.

Since then, Practice Squads have expanded and the rules on who can be part of them have relaxed. It would make a lot of sense to sign a player from another team's Practice Squad.

There are currently (on a quick count) 31 running backs on NFL practice squads. Seattle have three of them. Pretty much every team has its Lan Larison -- some training camp hero that the fans are in love with. I can't believe that there isn't at least one really good player out there.

He was talented enough to be a starting RB, he just played special teams like an ace, so he had more value to the team as the glue guy. Schooler seems to be similar…

The draft team should have scouted all those guys.

Might be one out there, but which one????
if you steal one, he has to occupy a slot in 53 for at least 3 weeks.
And they may not feel they know enough about those guys since the last time they saw them in person was the combine. Guys off the street they can pull-in / invite for a tryout-practice with no obligation. So a lot less risk
