Pats QB Room in for 2024

Penix has a bad injury record. Thought Nix was the better QB even though Oregon lost at Washington.
Penix definitely has a bigger canon but Nix just seems to get it done. Plus he’s pretty mobile for a big kid. Definitely like Odunze ..

Jimmy Garrapolo, Mac Jones, 1st round draft pick.
That’s a possibility. But I think it may be a little different, less definitive at this time.

I expect it will be:

1. Veteran NFL QB capable of winning a starting job. I’d like Kirk Cousins, if he doesn’t retire after his Achilles injury. Perhaps Jimmy G.
2. Established backup. Maybe Mac, because he’s here, he’s cheap, he‘s not starter quality but may be a good backup. And he’s cheap.
3. Rookie QB draft pick, probably middle round developmental prospect.

there will probably be one or two other prospects in camp. Maybe Grier plus another rookie. Or Grier may have missed his opportunity here, in which case some other prospect. Unlikely to be Zappe IMO.

I'd like a vet, preferably Cousins, but I think he's likely staying with the Vikings. Everyone after this is pretty much a JAG, which is what I expect we'll end up with. I do not want Jimmy G. He stank up Las Vegas and is a far cry from the guy we shipped out for a second.

I'd like a 1st round QB, even if we get Cousins. But if we get Cousins, I'm also okay with keeping Mac as backup and drafting an OT or WR high.

And then some mid- to late-round project as QB3.

I’d rather fix QB with a vet FA and draft Harrison than try to hit on drafting a first round QB prospect. That‘s assuming we have one first round pick. I think the WR payoff has a good reward for much lower risk. First round QBs are far from a sure thing, as we’ve seen with not just Mac/Corky but with the rest of his draft class as well.

I don't necessarily disagree, but I don't think any of the vet QBs are anything special other than Cousins, and I both think it's unlikely Cousins will be available and I don't think he's good enough to take a team to the promise land. I would take him as the Alex Smith type until we find a Mahomes, but ultimately, there are very few vet QBs who change teams and win a Super Bowl.

I think you just keep drafting until you find your guy unless a Drew Brees falls into your lap.

No on cousins. Why?

Coming off achilles, will cost north of $30M/yr, and we can’t protect an immobile guy already.

He’s last a few games maybe.

****, I’d take Crab Legs Jameis Winston over Cousins. Cheaper, big arm, can move a little.

Jimmy G is toast.

No one else barring a trade seems worth discussing unless you want Jacoby Brissette for his leadership.

The thing is with Cousins, you can win some games and use your other resources to get some OTs and WRs. I don't think Winston is winning you any games.

I feel like you are underestimating the power of his “eat a W” speech.

If you haven’t seen it…you must.

I would like Cousins if he is fully healthy. He’s shown he is a front rank QB. I expect the most likely landing place in Minnesota, although they might discount his value due to the Achilles. Also wonder if he will decide to hang it up after that injury.

Winston or Brisket would be okay. Any veteran QB capable of starting will mean a rookie can be developed without being thrown to the wolves on day one.

Nailed it. Pats CAN NOT start a rookie week 1.

Just have to let whomever it is learn a while without live fire.

Agreed, I just wonder what veterans capable of starting there will be? Bridgewater? um... Russel Wilson? The options behind Cousins are really, really bad.

That combined with having a high draft choice makes it almost inevitable we pick a rookie and a low-cost vet QB who really shouldn't be starting.

I don’t expect a vet QB to be the Second Coming of TB12, or to transform the team into a Lombardi winner the day he arrives. I’m looking for the Alex Smith type you suggest, as the starter to allow a rookie to learn how to be a starting NFL QB.

Problem with just drafting until you find your guy is it‘s a boom or bust strategy with odds stacked to bust. The rookies are under the gun from day one, no chance to learn the job before they are thrown into the fire. I think the real reason so many first round QBs bust is that they’re not given any chance to have a learning curve. Thats why I’d like to see a veteran even if he’s not HOF bound he’ll give the rookie a chance for some training before the pass-fail exam.

Oh, yes, I completely agree about letting the rookie learn and not be thrust into the starting role before he's ready. But just looking at the landscape of vet QBs likely to be available during free agency, I don't see the Alex Smith in the lot.

No new coach is going to want to keep Mac Jones.

I think the next few weeks are going to be very important for Mac. There needs to be some good tape of him sitting on the bench, ball cap on (not backward or to the side), tablet in hand (not upside down), sitting next to QB1, pointing and swiping the tablet, patting guys on the butt, etc. His next job is going to be a backup for some other team so he needs to show that he has the tools.

What about Jimmy G?

Drake Maye

Vet to play until Maye is ready: Josh Dobbs, Tyler Heinke, Tyrod Taylor, Teddy Bridgewater

The QB is going to be taken high in the first round, there will s no doubt in my mind about that.

I’m done with Mac Jones. I originally had him returning, now I want him gone, same with Zappe. Neither is good enough to play in this league.

I agree that they will try to bring in a veteran QB who has proven themself in this league. I originally thought it could be a Garrapolo, butbyoungavevto bring in two if you sign him, unless you want to start the rookie.

Mitch Trubisky or Drew Lock would be my choice I could Roll with Dobbs.
