If they don't trade him this offseason they will be "giving him away" at the end of next year - especially compared to what they could get for him now.
That's not totally true.
Remember 2015 when Brock Osweiler kept the Broncos afloat without Manning. He went 5-2 to help the Broncos secure homefield advantage in the playoffs. One less win and they would have tumbled to the #5 seed, playing in wildcard weekend on the road for potentially 3 straight games to make it to the Super Bowl.
The 3-1 start without Brady mattered a lot this year in securing homefield. If we go 1-3, we might not. And if one of those losses had been to Miami, we might not even win the division.
I'm not saying we should keep Jimmy no matter what, but there's great value in a quality backup too. When Derek Carr got hurt, the season was over for the Raiders. If something were to happen to Brady, we would still have a chance, though maybe not as the favourites. It would be like having an extra life in a video game, hopefully you don't need it, but it gives you more chances to succeed if you do.
