No they really haven't. They are average in 3rd down conversions low in takeaways and near the best in points allowed. They are also + in time of possession.
Sure sometimes they have allowed 3rd down conversions that gave the other team 3 more plays but the sum total is they get off the field without allowing points about as good as anyone.


Passer rating is meaningless if you don't score points.

There is a tremendous difference between being concerned about a future opponent and calling good football bad.

No one is saying this defense is the second-coming of the 85 Bears.

A valid argument can be made that this defense is a top 10/top 5 NFL defense.

An argument can also be made that this defense doesn't have the personnel to shut down teams so they need to play conservative and be opportunistic that A) the opposing offense will screw up and B) TB12 & Co will put enough points on the board to get the other team's O off their game.

For the most part that strategy IS working.

Every team has flaws. DAL and OAK's defenses stink. KC and DEN have bad QBs. SEA has had like four games where they scored under 10 points.

Someone has to win the SB, so somebody's flaws aren't fatal. I'll take my chances with the Pats provided they get the 1 seed.

No it has nothing to do with whether the results are good or not.
If you allow 17 points you did well. If you allow 35 you didn't regardless of someone's opinion of the opponent.
This is because all you can do that day is won or lose. Nothing you do counts in a future game.

I am not gonna bother even trying to do that. With a decent QB you can throw against this defense all day long. Thats what my eyes tell me and I am not alone. If they played and beat a healthy Big Ben that would have been a quality win. Other than Seattle there isn't to much to choose from.

I am not sure what total defense is, I think it takes yards given up as the basic stat. Green Bay as awful as they have been have given up fewer yards than New England.

I think what troubles me is its not what the stats say, its who they have played and when they played them. This isn't 2007 when their schedule was big game after big game against good teams. We have played alot of average to below average teams this season.

Your eyes are wrong. You cannot find that many defenses who are not more flawed than this one but you know that.

Yards are a horrible gauge of a defense.

They can only play who is on the schedule.
If they did poorly against bad teams that is one thing. But they have done very very well against those teams. Playing well against a poor opponent does not translate to playing poorly against a good one.
By your approach they failed and suck no matter how they okay because playing a weaker opponrn means you suck.

Ok its actually hard to do that because you would need to look at every teams schedule. I am basing my rating on who the Pats have played and when they played them. If you look deeper than points allowed you would see we have had a relatively easy schedule this season. Not to many high powered offenses, yet they still have given up alot of passing yards and first downs to mediocre teams.

Well, I still don't see it.

Our opponents average 339.2 yards per game when the NE game is removed. We allow 353.2 Yards per game a 14 Yards per game difference.

Our opponents average 21.5 PPG when the NE game is removed. We allow 17.9 PPG, a 3.6PPG difference.

So on average we allow 14 more yards and 3.6 points less per game.

League average Points Per Game, not including NE, is 22.8. So the offenses we play are 1.3 PPG below the league average. And we are 3rd in total points allowing under 18PPG.

17 defenses have allowed less than 22.8 ppg this season.
Only 3 are under 18
Only 9 are under 20 ppg.

Washington has a really good offense. Definitely top 10. You can't just judge a team by stats because its all relative to who you have played.

Well with there relatively weak schedule the only reason why the Patriots haven't blown out more teams is because they let teams go on clock killing drives.
