Pats claim WR Michael Floyd

Not open for further replies.
My wishful thinking/best case scenario is that he WAS parked off to the side to begin with, trying to sober up with some tunes playing and was close to an intersection. That would technically be the offence. I've had a friend get a DUI for pretty much the same thing.

It's hard to imagine pulling up to a stop sign, putting the car in park, and zoning out. If he just passed out, he would have probably stalled the car out (in a manual) or creeped through the intersection (automatic).

Not making excuses for the guy, he has a lot of options to avoid that situation either way, but it was clear he was parked and sleeping at a stop sign...just trying to add up how that happens.

Not sure where you got your information but its wrong.

Floyd was passed out at a lighted intersection. His foot was jammed against the brake with the engine running. The cops had to pound on his window to wake him up. It took them yelling at him several times before he put his Escalade in park, shut the engine off and was arrested.

My information was "wrong"? My information was only the three points you laid out. I was merely wondering what the details were. You provided them in this last post. Thank you!

Charlie Weiss is so far removed from what the Patriots now do on offense that I cannot believe when people continue to mention any relation to him as being some advantage. The time when Charlie Weiss flamed out at Notre Dame to boot.

I suggest you go back and read Patriots Reign and War Room. The Patriots schemes may have changed, but the routes that they have receivers run have not. Furthermore, the offense is Bill Belichick's offense, not Charlie Weis', though Charlie put some plays in. As did O'Brien. As has McDaniels. The BIG question will be whether Floyd can put in the time to learn the formations and what he needs to do in terms of running the different routes and running them the way Brady wants him to.

Did you even bother to read what you posted?

He wasn't parked. He wasn't at a stop sign.. Hence, you had wrong information. So, trying to play it off by claiming you were "wondering what the details were" is complete BS since you were barely in the same ballpark.. The only thing you had correct was that he was on a road at an intersection.

Instead of saying JC, why don't you go back and read your own post, which I quoted verbatim.. Then go look in the mirror to see where the problem is.

Let any drinking man in here who's never gotten behind the wheel after a few too many cast the first stone...

As someone who royally ****ed up about 20 years ago and took out a utility pole head on no skid marks and totalled an 85 Grand Marquis (yes, I know I could've killed someone or myself - I was alone in the car on my way home from Northeastern), perhaps this will be Floyds wake up call... It was mine....

Yeah, what are you saving cap space for?

It's week 15.....

Well, first of all you're taking my response to a comment that incorrectly claimed 2x "there are zero salary cap implications" and spinning it into something different, but that's fine. The point was to state how much Floyd is going to cost, and I think you're overstating the supposed "insignificance" of 1.3m dollars.

But let's run with where you're going for the appreciation of debate--There are a couple of solid reasons why it being week 15 has nothing to do with anything. First off, they normally carry space into next season since it's been an option, so it's not as if it magically disappears at the end of the season. I doubt that Belichick changes his value system based on whether or not it's snowing outside. Floyd at 1.3m dollars for a few late season games where he'll almost certainly be inactive this week and next isn't good value, but if they like what they see and can reach a reasonable extension on a former first-round talent, all the better.

Perhaps he can contribute as a red zone threat/possession receiver in a limited role by the time the postseason rolls around, but I'm thinking that Belichick sees this as an opportunity for a nice "one year prove it deal" at a reasonable cost for 2017.

Further proof that Myra Kraft took this organization's moral compass with her when she died. What's worse, is that the majority of the people here have absolutely no issue with it. When exactly did we turn into Baltimore/Pittsburgh fans?

The kid is obviously a moron. Many WRs smarter than him have come here and failed to grasp this needlessly complex offensive and gel with a crotchety old QB who insists on jamming the ball into one or two guys, regardless of how many defenders are on them while ignoring the new guy(s) no matter how open they are. But this guy is going become a significant contributor to this offense in three games? We sold our integrity for Chad Johnson 2.0 and a relatively useless compensatory pick. Disgusting. This team gets more unlikeable by the day.

Hopefully the next time this scumbag gets drunk and goes for a drive it's not your loved one he cripples or kills. At least now it's possibility due to proximity and you people are happy about it. Uneal.

And in a late attempt to win the worst post of the year.... dafoe2016 comes out of nowhere to take the lead

There's so much fail in this post of yours that I don't even really know where to begin. So, I'll just say

Corey Dillon

and leave it at that.

Some said the team should've tried getting Floyd in the Chandler Jones trade. Well, he ended up here anyway...

Some more comments on the comments:

1. Just to sum up the ND connection value: Having played for Charlie, Floyd has SOME familiarity with the semantics (language) and route running concepts that still exist in Foxboro. To put it in perspective, it's like going to school in France for a couple of years and you pick up the local language and become pretty fluent in it. Then you come back home for 4 years, and don't speak a word of French, and then suddenly you get sent to France again. When you land at Orly on Friday, the language seems familiar, but its not like you are as fluent as you once were. However picking it up again will be a LOT easier than if they sent you to China instead. In other words, it's not much, but it's something.

2. I am not worried at all about him being suspended THIS year. Roger can't do anything until the DUI is finalized in court. That could take months. That being said, a 2-4 game suspension is DEFINITELY in Floyd's future next season. But for this season suspension won't be a factor.

3. Far from being a threat to team harmony, I think Floyd will be welcomed in the Pats locker room. This just shows the team how committed the FO is to winning it all this season. Think about it. If you were in that locker room, who do you want out on the field with you when you need to make a play, Griff Whalen, or Michael Floyd. They know they are thin at WR, and the FO found the best guy possible to add some depth and were willing to commit some significant $ in doing it. Besides by ALL accounts Floyd is a very good locker room guy, well liked by his team mates.

How long he's here will be dependent on how Floyd behaves and how quickly he learns, and what he does on the field, but as far as the locker room accepting him, the leadership will accept him as long as they think he is working hard to make the team better....period.

4. Assuming he stays in Foxboro this weekend the Pats have just over a month to get him ready to be a competent part of the receiving corps for the playoffs(the rest of this week, 2 games, a bye week, and game week). I think it is reasonable enough to think this coaching staff can create a package of plays that he can run in that time. Again he is familiar with the language and concepts that are run here.

5. Upside - IF he likes his 2 month experience here and is willing to sign a one year incentive laden prove it deal here, it would be a huge coupe for the Pats. With DA and Edelman entering their 30's and showing signs of slowing down, getting a guy with Floyd's talents, speed, size and age would fill a huge need.

a. The AZ guys Reiss talked with said that pre season Floyd was talking about looking for Julio Jones money after this season. Well obviously THAT's never going to happen, but if his eye are too big, or someone wants to overpay if he does well here, then there is the comp pick advantage. (not that it guaratees we get one, but it would help)

6. The downside - None, unless you think the $1.3MM will significantly keep us from signing anyone with the 70 odd Million we will have under the cap next season.

I didn't think this would happen. First I thought some one lower would claim him. I did beleive the Pats would "kick his tires" but only if he became a FA, and he'd probably go elsewhere. I was wrong not to think the Pats would be so proactive here. They are clearly taking advantage of a player who put himself in a bad situation, just like LGB's experience in Pittsburgh. We can only pray it works out nearly as well.

I think all that needs to happen is a few successful plays of his against the Dolphins in the season finale and his presence will add another wrinkle that other teams need to prepare for. It doesn't matter if Brady will look towards him in crunchtime during the playoffs if they can manufacture some tape to showcase Floyd.

Also like others have already said his presence in the blocking game could be huge and goes under the radar a bit right now. He adds back some of the flexibility to generate favorable matchups that we lost went Gronk went to IR.

I am excited about this addition, hope it works out.

I like it, hopefully he comes motivated to play.

This is definitely the ****tiest post I've ever seen.

I understand how MAD and people who have lost someone or who were impacted by a drunk driver are upset that the pats picked him up. Drug use is not something that anyone should condone, even if millions do partake so daily.

But I don't think someone should have his livelyhood taken away unless he is a driver. He should go to jail for a month, have his licence suspended and a monitor placed in his car for 2 years. If the nfl chooses to suspend him more, that is their prerogative.

I am thrilled to have him on the field for the Pats. He is a big physical reciever who will be a great blocker in the running game the first game back. The Pats first playoff game is a month from now. He is not signed of an injury where there is any rust. Amendola being injured required us to get another talent at WR. The 1.3 mil is nothing for the insurance he provides

The NFL would save itself a lot of time, money and pain if it stopped trying to be the moral compass for society as they really really suck at it.

Let the teams decide. Their fans and corporate sponsors will tell them what's acceptable
