The pats need to make a switch at slot WR

IF $h!t goes sideways I bet Josh is the First to go. Josh had an embarrassing end with the the Raiders; which really bothers me. Really don't know if I want a guy like him with my Young QB; dated Offense and all. Would like an Offense in this century: this isn't Madden.

Aren't we linked with Josh for awhile now? You can't really give Maye another offense to learn can you?

Still not looking like a number one overall but I thought he looked a little better week 1 than last year.

The problem with the offense is mostly the OL. That being said I’d like to see Hollins or Hooper in the slot against the Dolphins. Either one would provide Maye with a much bigger target right in front of him….mismatch. They can block as well. I do think Pop or Chism are the answer in the slot…eventually.

I think Pop was misused week one. I saw a report that most of his routes weren’t the normal short underneath routes you would expect him to run. I can’t remember the specifics, but most his routes were mid depth. We need the quick underneath routes, 2 way option routes…etc.
Not sure why Josh chose that plan, seems like an error to me.

Yes, presuming that Maye has the time, someone needs to be running intermediate and longer routes. It is not all clear that our #5 rookie WR is ready for prime time. He showed little in camp.

Yeah, Ben Johnson is impressing me as a coach and leader! If anyone can help Williams its him.

But caught a glimpse of his son Max coming in for BB at UNC - and damn, he looked pretty good during his time.

I since learned more about his story - I really couldn't care less about BB at UNC - but I'm REALLY rooting for Max Johnson to get his shot.

If Caleb Williams doesn't work out, I'd love to see a father/son coach/QB duo in the NFL as a great ending to the story.

Speed is nice but it's not everything. Plenty of guys just able to juke a guy with a step or head fake.

I could never quite figure out why a guy like Ocho Cinco couldn't do more here because his speed alone just had guys beat all the time, but speed wasn't quite enough, and there were a lot of guys slower than him who were better.

The bottom line is that you DO need one or two players who can stretch the field.

Thankfully, at least with one game under our belt, we are doing OK on that with Boutte grabbing 6 for an average of 18 yards each. That and Henry's 16 yards will certainly keep Ds honest if they can keep that up.

For comparison sake, look back to the 2006 team with Reche Caldwell "stretching the field" to the tune of 12 yards per catch!

So I'm pretty happy to see Boutte and Henry pick up 10 catches averaging 17 yards each. Heck, even Randy Moss only averaged 15 yards per catch, so hopefully opposing DCs are taking notice!

This of course helps Maye's healthy GREATLY as DBs are less likely to creep up to put extra pressure on him.

I’m not talking about yards after catch, or long developing plays that eventually end in an open receiver because of broken coverage… like we saw against the Raiders.

A fast WR threatens opponents vertically, the receivers we’re fielding are average to slow. One of them has to force the DB’s to account for the far end of the field… otherwise having a QB who can heave it 80 yards is meaningless.

David Patten came undrafted from the Arena League, he usually only got 2-3 receptions per game. But his presence alone made the underneath stuff easier, opened up the middle of the field, created a massive chunk play that tilted the field. Ideally one of the receivers does that for you. What I saw against the Raiders was a congested offense, among other things.

Ocho Cinco had 4.5 speed, Patten ran a 4.29 at his pro day. Two different tools for two different jobs.

Production from the slot was a major disappointment week 1. I expect the slot wr to have substantial production in a McDaniel offense. I don't expect prime Brady/Welker or Brady/Edelman right away but 2 catches for negative yards is a terrible.

Who is to blame? Thats a little more complex. Is it Maye? McDaniels? The outside WRs not stretching the field? Or is it Pop? Likely some combination of all those things.

Not fair to blame the O-Line though. The whole idea of the slot wr is to get some short quick hitters to keep the chains moving. The ball should be coming out quick negating the pass rush.

Agreed, and I do think this is McD's fault more than anyone else. Why was Pop running routes at mid depth, where is the quick underneath hitters?

That is just as perplexing as completely abandoning the run last week.

If you overthrow a tall target in the slot that ball is going straight into a Safety’s hands.
