Patriots won't Mortgage picks to move up for a QB

so, neither do we

You can call the media "clowns" for speculating. They get paid to do that you know. Do you call posters who disagree with you "clowns" also?
No, those posters you speak of are fans. I expect the media to bring more to the table than what we all speculate here. They get paid to find out chit. We can sit here an fantasize about going up to get Josh Allen or trading down for more picks till the cows come home. I expect these guys to know something.

The days of sitting a talented young QB on the bench for 3 years are over, it's 1/maybe 2 years now. We can also expect to have TB for 3 seasons including this one, I think at that point BB would pull the plug regardless if he's got the right replacement.

Therefore, we're 1 year too early to be investing a high choice in a QB. A pick over 60, sure - but not under that. You think BB wants to draft one in the top 23, have the guy be ready after 1 or 2 seasons, and then endure another JimmyG drama?

Yes, many QB's are forced to start in the first year, quite an issue for many of them.

There is no reason for teams like the patriots (and others) not to develop quarterbacks.

With regard to a JimmyG "drama", that would be after 3 or 4 years, not one or two. And if Brady were still playing at a reasonable level after 3 or 4 years, there would be NO drama, it would be the time to extend our developing QB, just as it would be if Brady played only through 2019.

I think if there was ever a year to package picks together and move up to 8 or 9 (depending on if their guy falls), it's this year. They have a surplus of picks without a surplus of needs and could definitely use the 5th year option that a rookie quarterback provides. I know a lot are hot on Lamar Jackson, but I doubt he'll be available at 23. This is a deep quarterback draft, but the cream of the crop talent still resides at the top of the first round. I wouldn't be shocked in the least if we see a trade up to that area.

IMHO, there is a presumption by some that we simply draft a franchise quarterback when we want, with the resources that we then have. AND, because we are the patriots, everything will work out.

Many of us take a much different view. For many of us, finding a franchise quarterback is extremely difficult, even with 1st or 2nd round talent. We may need to use a 23 this year and a 1st rounder next on quarterbacks to have two POTENTIAL starters competing.

If Belichick sees the opportunity, I see ZERO reason not to trade up (using two of our first four picks). Of course, this quarterback would be one that the team rated much higher than one likely to be available at 23.

As someone who saw Mike White during his time at USF, no thanks.
Yes, because QBs can never improve, they are always the same player they were at age 19.

Exactly. It's idiotic to consider that 5th year option anything but an advantage.

There is one risk (which Blake Bortles may have taken advantage of): as soon as it is exercised, it is guaranteed for injury. As soon as the fifth year starts, it becomes fully guaranteed.

Terrible philosophy. The far and away two best QB’s in the league are Brady (sat a year and was expected to sit another) and Rodgers (sat 3 years). Confidence is huge for a QB. You shatter it early and potential doesn’t matter.

Mayfield, his antics aside, would be the only QB i’d trade up for. You have to leap frog over the Jets though and trade with the Giants.

Maybe he feels mike white has no room for improvement!’?

As with any year, and at any position, you ("you" being the decision makers for the team in question) should only draft a player if you think there's a suitable one available. It doesn't matter if everyone else thinks there are 100 NFL level QBs. All that matters is whether or not you think there is an NFL level QB that fits your team and is attainable.
Agreed, it’s always about who you think fits your system. Being that the Pat’s offense is about quick passes and getting the ball out quick, there are AT LEAST 2 or 3 QBs that fit that description. That’s why I think we pick one of those QBs that has a quick release.

I love Mayfield, but I wouldn’t trade that high for him. You’d have to surrender a king’s ransom. My hypothetical was based on whether their guy was there at 8 or 9.

He won’t get past Jetes at 3. And if he some how does, the broncos will nab him.

There is just no way that Bill Belichick is going to let reporters know what he is planning to do. That would be like telling the defense what play you are going to run.
It is unrealistic to expect someone who covers the team to have inside information about draft plans.
Hell the last 6 months have been rife with reporters telling inaccurate stories about foxboro goings on because to get any story they have to talk to someone so far removed that it has no credibility.

You realize that “reporting” has turned into what did Gronkowski mean in a tweet and why did Brady at the end of a documentary called Tom vs Time talk about the challenges of beating time, so does that mean he is somehow unhappy.
To have something to write about they are now taking things publicly available and writing about speculating what they mean.

The patriot offense won’t be about short passes and getting the ball out quickly with a qb who can’t make every throw and force you to cover the entire field in order to allow the quick short passes to work.
Plus the patriot offense isn’t even all about that Brady gets the ball field as often and as well as anyone.

I know, they have to write something. In reality, they know about what we know. I trust certain guys... Curran is probably at the top of that short list. Zo has access, but I think he's 100% in on holding the corporate line.

We are all likely to be as qualified as any of those guys, when it comes to speculating what the team will do. The era of good reporting is gone. Hot Takes and garnering clicks, that's all they want now.

If we are going by that logic and we have a QB who should play atleast Two more years why mortgage to get to the top?? The guy or guys we draft are going to sit for at least two years... I can't see the GOAT playing beyond that.

I expect the Broncos to take Chubb if he falls to them. The Jete may not grab a QB in that spot depending on how they feel about Bridgewater. If they do, I certainly hope it's not Mayfield. I would much rather it be Rosen or Allen.

I think Rosen would be the best pick for the Pat’s offense, but I don’t think the Pats would trade up to get him. Jackson is interesting because supposedly Louisville’s offense has a lot of similarities to the Pat’s. Lauletta has a very quick release but pepeople here think he has a noodle arm. Mike White has a good arm and a quick release and good size, he may be the guy the Pats select.
