I think this would be contingent on the desired player being available, of course. The question is: which player? Julio Jones? Robert Quinn? Dareus (if he inexplicably falls that far)?

I think the Pats will move up tonight, but I don't buy any trade rumor until it happens. I am sure they are talking to a lot of teams to move up, but they won't pull the trigger until that pick is on the clock.

The rumor is Quinn but at #6. I'd be really surprised if they did this.

If there's a run on QBs in the top 15, then the Patriots are sitting pretty at #17.

In fact, they should try to trade up from #28.

and exactly how many rumors during BB's last 11 years with the Patriots turned out to be true? If there's a reliable source (which would almost certainly have to be on the other end of the trade, not on the Patriots end), please let us know who it is.

Despite popular opinion, Bill will trade up when he wants too, he's done it in the past.

They are discussing moving up just as a due diligence, so if there is a stud available that they want they don't have to scramble last minute to try and talk a deal, since there is only 10 minutes between picks. I'd be very surprised if the Pats traded into the top 10. I would also be very surprised if they actually used both of their 1st round picks.

Despite popular opinion, Bill will trade up when he wants too, he's done it in the past.

I think it's Quinn. Lets all hope it is.

But, as someone on this board noted, the most he's ever given up in a move up is a mid-third.

Trading up using some combination of 17, 28, 60, or God forbid 33 would be unheard of for BB.

And there used to be a saying that Belichick won't draft underclassmen high until he did. Or he wouldn't draft an o-lineman in the first round. Or that he wouldn't take a LB in the first round.

One thing about Belichick is that he is unpredictable. If he sees a player he likes, he will go against his past trends.

OTOH, Jimmy Johnson's advice was to have a list of 25 players, across all rounds, that you really wanted on your team, and then manipulate your draft board to get as many of them as you can. That's not really compatible with a mega-trade up.

Again, I'm not saying that it would never happen, merely that it would really be a glaring change from years past.

Just because BB hasn't done whatever before does not indicate that it won't happen. Precident does not drive him; doing what's best for the team in the context of the environment does. BB looks at trends in the league, what others are doing and what his most problematic competitors do to his squad. Then he uses whatever tools he has to improve his competitiveness. If it means trading up to get A guy that makes the D as a whole improve, he'll do it. He is not bound by past tradition or tendencies and obviously has no fear of job security.

Seems everyone is basing this on Greg Bedard's info which it's a lot more likely came from "Big Show" (Holmgren) than Belichick... More likely Holmgren made the call, too. Holmgren is apparently in overdrive marketing #6. As usual, who better to base your marketing on than by referencing talking to Belichick about your valuable asset...
