Patriots Trade For Rams WR Greg Salas

Why does everyone on this board seemingly hate Edelman? He filled in nicely for Welker in the slot when he went down in '09 and as much as it pains me to admit it, this may be Welker's last year here (God forbid). Edelman may eventually replace him. What's with all the hate?

Being a Hawaii Fan.
Salas was a beast when he was here. A very Physical player who loves to fight for extra yardage. Made tons of plays for Hawaii, big plays when the team needed it. Above average hands. Better in the Slot position then outside.Doesnt have the burner speed to play outside.

I wouldnt use him as a Return man, takes to many chances.

I think Pats made a wise trade. Low risk ,high return

Reports indicate that he played inside last year, but made a move to the outside last offseason.

He has to be a true wideout, HAS TO.

The pick is conditional according to some reports. Does that usually mean that it could be 6th or 7th (or something like that) based on if Salas stays in our roster long enough?

I specifically remember watching this guy at the combine last year. While I'm no expert, even my wife (who isn't really an NFL fan), said to me: "He reminds me of Wes Welker."

There is no question in my mind that this is a potential Welker succession plan, or at least a shot in the dark to see if it works.

Meanwhile, Gaffney and Branch can't be happy right now, and I wonder if their loyalty and "Patriots only" mantra will start to fade fast. All I can say is the Patriots are the worst evaluators of talent at WR and CB in the NFL- fortunately, they are still the best organization in sports and no team hits 100%- but seriously, if this means Gaffney, Branch, Stallworth, and Gonzalez were all just bad moves, they need to bring someone in who knows the position.

Well, they did revive Randy Moss's career and get his most productive season ever at an age when most receivers begin their decline. They also turned Wes Welker into superstar, turn Branch from a 2nd round pick into a 1st rounder, and rescue Gaffney off the scrap heap and turn him into an above-replacement-level NFL starter.

Meanwhile, in Belichick's tenure, they haven't spent a single first round pick on a WR. The highest they've gone is the 2nd round, where on average only around 1 in 5 don't wash out. Now think about all of the teams that have dropped early 1st round picks on total busts. I mean, think about how many the Lions alone devoted to WR before hitting on Megatron.

So who is getting cut to open up his roster spot?

This has J. McD written all over it.

Interesting he would want Salas over the several other WRs there were cut. I'm all for getting younger at WR, but is he really going to be better than Branch?

No one. We cut 22 guys yesterday and put Demps on IR in addition. That means we have 1 opening.

Unless it got filled earlier today and I dont know about it...

Let me add that I am the biggest Belichick/Kraft supporter out there. I know that the gap between Belichick, as both a coach and GM, and the next guy is huge. The record speaks for itself.

However, I wouldn't say I have "grass is greener" syndrome. I'm talking about WR and CB, not the overall picture. To focus on WR, I give you that the moves to get Moss and Welker in '07 were brilliant, purely brilliant. One of the greatest offenses in NFL history was assembled because of two guys that were easy to get when their stock was low. I don't think there's any question that the Patriots have gotten as much out of their WRs as any team over the last five years, or at least out of their pass catchers (TEs included.)

However, I stand by my point that the Patriots are terrible at evaluating talent in general at WR. This is probably because the offensive complexity, timing, and chemistry with Brady. Whatever the reason is they are not good at it.

Since 2000, when Belichick took over, the best WR they've drafted is Deion Branch. Deion Branch? I doubt there is another team in the NFL that has failed to draft any receivers in the last ten years that haven't had at least ONE 1000 yard season. Yes, I may be nitpicking, as he fell two yards short, but the point is that is their BEST WR draft pick.

If you look at the top 3 WR receivers in the Brady era, it's Moss, Welker, Branch. What about after that? Troy Brown was good for a few years but was a holdover from Parcells. David Givens? Stallworth who was okay for one year? Caldwell? Gaffney? We're literally talking about, in the last ten years for guys they've brought in:

-Two all-pro receivers (Moss, Welker)
-One borderline #1 receiver, who most would say is a #2 (Branch)
-A couple of decent, but not great #2 WRs (Stallworth, Gaffney). And just for a year or two at that
-A bunch of guys that would struggle to break the starting lineup anywhere else

All teams have plenty of busts at every position, but the list of failed experiments is very high:
-Chad Jackson
-Bethel Johnson
-Reche Caldwell
-Sam Aiken
-Taylor Price
-Brandon Tate
-Joey Galloway
-Torry Holt
-Chad Ochocinco
-And this is why I say if you add the summer of '12 to this list (which may turn out to be not so bad, but as of our knowledge at this moment, I see more bad talent evaluation.)

*-Brandon Lloyd- I hope he makes me eat my words.

The problem with these busts is that they aren't even decent enough to get on the field, let alone be playmakers. This entire list is just filled with horrendous results. Not guys who just didn't excel, but guys who couldn't even make the roster.

It would be foolish to say the overall production of the Patriots offense has failed expectations in any way, and it hasn't. But I can still make a point that it could be better, and as the whole Pats organization would say, there's always room for improvement.

Well, we are planning on signing (or maybe we already have) Matt Tenannt. Don't no squat about the guy, except that he's an OL.

JMD was the OC there. Not every WR in the league demonstrated an ability to learn his offense. Salas must have.

Speaking for myself.. my first post was sarcasm

I actually really like Edelman.. I think the door is open for him to have a bigger role in the offense. I like this move for Salas as well. We definitely needed at least one more WR. Not really sure who might get the boot.. I'm thinking DB or DL

Here's what Scout Inc says about the guy:

Salas has above-average downfield speed but takes a bit of time to generate his speed on the release. He is not as quick and explosive as necessary to be effective uncovering when faced with solid man coverage corners. He needs to be a bit crisper on his routes, but he does a solid job of reading coverages and finding lanes against zone schemes. He is a natural catcher who can reach out and pluck the ball in all areas.

He actually had some pretty good games as a back up last year considering Bradford was injured and he was a back up.

I've often wondered the same thing. While not an "Elite" player, Edleperson has been a good, versatile, stay healthy player. He has been an assest to this team in time of need. I remember him playing offense and defense in the same game!

Matt Tennant
Greg Salas
Brian Waters (impending)

Two roster moves will be required once Brian Waters has been removed for the Reserve/Did Not Report List.

There was no Edelman "hate" posted.
