Patriots trade for Carolina DE Kony Ealy

Jokes aside, Panthers fan friend who knows his **** says Patriots got the better part of the deal since they basically gave up nothing for him. He thinks Ealy's been a disappointment at best, but said he's still young and has "3 cone for days" which is Belichick's favorite thing.

Is anyone else getting an uneasy feeling the 2017 Patriots have the potential to be significantly better than the Super Bowl winning 2016 Patriots? Belichick is making out like a bandit in this FA period. It's pure, unadulterated joy watching him work the NFL.

Absolutely. Looking at how they're so active comparatively indicates to me that they analyzed what would happen with all the money sloshing around and said "let's target and get who we want quickly before people have a chance to think about it". Yet another example of the chess/checkers and zag-when-they-zig thing, assuming that what is about to happen is those teams with so much money suddenly realizing there's little quality to spend it on, and they now HAVE to spend it. Unfortunately, that's likely to mean High is gone on an absurd contract to someone and presumably why negotiations with Butler aren't going so well and they wanted the insurance of locking up Gilmore while that played out.

They got him for a swap of picks which was the equivalent of an approximate 5th round pick.

Ive seen this post about 20 times on this board, and i finally want to say....

Yes, if you look at the draft value chart, it would normally be equivalent to 5th round pick in terms of "points", But that chart is very black and white.

When you look at the depth and talent in this years draft, all the way up until about the 3rd round. The difference between #64, and 72 is essentially nothing. The difference in talent between those two draft positions won't even come down to "talent" as much as it will come down to "need" for the teams selecting at those positions.

Is it for certain for Carolina's 3rd round #72 and not their compensatory #98?

Steal of a move. Just a few draft slots and kick the tires on a cheap guy with potential. Love it, low risk move

while cooks and Gilmore will get most of the attention going forward, this is the kind of pickup that bb turns into pure gold.

This guy just needs to line up on the end of the line and go get the qb.

Not necessarily. What could be better than having our first round pick be a DE who we can afford to let gestate as the #4 DE in the rotation, and them be ready to take on a major role in year two. Don't forget that if Ealy has a good a year as Sheard did his first year, then he's likely to wind up being a one year rental.
I didn't mean that in yes or no terms. I'm completely on board with taking a DE. At the least, adding Ealy makes that position less pressing than it was a day before.

A guy who made huge plays against the highest scoring offense in league history in a SB. That's worth something.

Ealy played for Carolina, not Seattle. While he had a monster game, it was not against the highest scoring offense of all time.

IF the Pats lock up Hightower to go along with Flowers and Kony Ealy we could rush four and get there more times than not. Flowers and Ealy are going to be terror for the Guards on Third downs.

Also, not that BB, Le GOAT, or JMD need ANY help whatsoever, but Ealy could be a bug in their ear in regards to the intricacies of how McDermott likes to run his D in BUF, since he played for him for 2 seasons.

And set the edge!

He knows he's in a contract year, and wants to make a statement. Can't wait!!

Ealy comes in for a (motivated) year. Best case : he plays SO well that he prices himself over what NE is willing to pay. And moving down a few slots becomes a no brainer. And, like Long before him, he leaves a champ & we chuckle as the Patsfans board freaks out over losing him (while BB sips on his OJ and finds the next diamond).

This right here is all you need to know.
