Patriots trade for Carolina DE Kony Ealy

Not sure how that works. Right now the Pats added one guy at $13mm/yr, and lost 2 guys at 10, and 8MM/yr. Also IIRC, they factor in playing time, and we still know know exactly how any of those contracts are actually structured on even what they really worth.

The point being we are way too early in trying to predict any comp picks we might get out of this FA period.
I believe it is player for player. Gilmore would cancel the Pats top FA lost, currently Ryan.

Gotta see what happens with DH at this point, regarding comp. Picks

Ealy hasn't played for the Pats..

Also someone from PFF tweeted something earlier, I think it was posted in this thread. It shows Long and Sheard's pressures the year before NE and then the year they came to NE. Huge jump up in that department

BB will be charged with robbery after this one...taking candy from a baby

Is anyone else getting an uneasy feeling the 2017 Patriots have the potential to be significantly better than the Super Bowl winning 2016 Patriots? Belichick is making out like a bandit in this FA period. It's pure, unadulterated joy watching him work the NFL.

No, because I'm not uneasy at all. :p

Perhaps he's trying to finish what he started 10 years ago.

Interesting thought. Usually the Superbowl teams take a step back the next season, because loose a number of key people like the Pats have, and they've played a over a month more and 3-4 extra games.

Lombardi a while back opined the Pats might not be quite as good this season, but will be better in 2018. Maybe he was thinking about the FA loses and the impact of not having that #1 pick.

That being said this seems to have been a great start to the FA period considering BB usually does his best work in FA AFTER the draft. Looks like the key losses will end with Bennett, Ryan, and Sheard, and already the Pats have responded to those with Allen, Gilmore, and Ealy, so, so far so good.

But then only time will tell if the 3 newbies will be as good as the guys they replaced.

If Hightower is gone then not really.

Viewpoints from Charlotte on Ealy are not very flattering:

Return of iconic player, exit of stubborn one signal new motto for Panthers GM Dave Gettleman

Not long after Ealy’s virtuoso performance in Super Bowl 50, Panthers coach Ron Rivera revealed that Gettleman thought Ealy had a little bit of Josh Norman in him, which is to say – a stubborn streak.

It was not intended as a compliment.

And just as Norman was shown the door last spring with little in return (save for a third-round compensatory pick), the Panthers dealt Ealy to New England for a swap of picks that allowed Carolina to move up eight spots in next month’s draft.

At least Gettleman got something in exchange for Ealy, the second-round pick from Missouri in 2014. The Panthers would have had nothing to show for Ealy had they cut him in August, which was a real possibility given the addition of (Julius) Peppers and the re-signings of Charles Johnson, Wes Horton and Mario Addison.

At the end of the article the author portrays the draft pick of Ealy as a "miss":

Gross said Peppers will raise the play of those around him because of how he practices and plays. Peppers might have helped jump-start the stalled development of Ealy, whose flashes of stardom were sandwiched between long stretches of lackluster play.

But Ealy will always have Santa Clara.

Ealy did what no player has ever done in a Super Bowl, collecting three sacks and an interception in the same game. In threatening to ruin Peyton Manning’s swan song, Ealy made it seem like the light had come on for him.

And then it didn’t.

Ealy leaves with 14 sacks in three seasons, and probably will become Bill Belichick’s next reclamation project to flourish and win a Super Bowl ring.

But Gettleman’s miss on Ealy was overshadowed Friday by his get on Peppers, whose return to his home state for his final chapter is – as Gross said – a feel-good story on the heels of 6-10.

Wow that is great. Why would carolina even do this deal?

Yeah, Josh Norman had a stubborn streak and the Panthers (for 10m - 2m/year more than Gilmore just got) let him walk to Washington and their defense crashed like a rock.

Who was being stubborn there? I laugh at the people who were calling Carolina a forthcoming dynasty. Idiots.

More thoughts on Ealy from Charlotte are not particularly complimentary:

Carolina Panthers trade Kony Ealy to New England Patriots

It’s a stunning fall from grace for a player who might have been the MVP of Super Bowl 50 had the Panthers beaten the Denver Broncos. Ealy had three sacks, an interception a forced fumble and a fumble recovery against Peyton Manning in the Broncos’ 24-10 victory in February of 2016.

But Ealy failed to build on his big night in Santa Clara, Calif.

He had five sacks all of last season, and frustrated coaches with a stubborn streak that general manager Dave Gettleman compared to Josh Norman’s early in the cornerback’s career.

The Panthers have loaded on experienced edge rushers, re-signing Mario Addison, Wes Horton and Charles Johnson and agreeing to terms with future Hall of Famer Julius Peppers.

Those additions made Ealy expendable.

The second-round pick in 2014, who lost his starting job to Horton last season, had 14 sacks in three seasons with Carolina.

From the comments section, after an obligatory 'we lost the SB cuz da Pats cheat' whine:

- There is upside but he was a dissapointment last season. Was taken #60 overall late in the second round. Could thrive or he could do nothing. Time will tell.

- He is very promising as he showed in Super Bowl 50. With him going on a contract year this coming year, I would bet he has a resurgence and does very well. Not sure losing him for only moving up 8 spots in draft is a good thing but as I wasn't aware of any attitude problem he had I will have to just believe in DG. Assume we are going to draft a new edge rusher this year and not have to deal with resigning Ealy next year. As bad as I hate the patriots (lol) I think you got a good guy for only losing 8 spots in draft.

- I hate to see Ealy go too but it's obvious the Panthers had simply lost patience with him. The frustrating thing is that we all saw the "potential" he displayed against Denver in the Super Bowl. He just couldn't replicate that performance & arguably showed signs of regression this past season. Clearly Gettleman & the Coaching staff gave up on him & maybe after 3 seasons without earning his keep he became expendable. If anyone can resurrect his career the Pats can & this is probably his last chance.

As for the Panthers I can see where the argument could be made that they should have given Ealy one more year. Sure contract year for him which is an incentive in itself plus he was only costing them a little over $800,000. However I think there were 2 things at play here; Gettleman sending a message to everyone that the time is now! If everyone is not sold out right now for this upcoming season then you are expendable. Secondly I think it's a foreshadowing of Gettleman's potential draft plans. Think about it; they will have 3 Defensive Ends over 30 this year(CJ, Pepp & Addisson). They are not the long term solutions. I think getting rid of Ealy clears up a roster spot & points to Gettleman picking a young STUD Defensive End with the #8 first round pick who would be groomed by the Vets to become the DE of the future, plus the young DE would come in without that much pressure to perform immediately & can grow into the role.
